Proverbs 16:19 Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.
Today’s verse is a direct application and follow up to another famous verse, Proverbs 16:18 - Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. In that verse and in today’s we see that a prideful, self-centered attitude is going to do nothing but end in disaster and destruction. The author follows the statement on destruction with the comment that it is better to be lowly in spirit (humble) than to share the plunder with the proud. The proud might temporarily have plunder to enjoy, but in the end they are not going to have that. It will lead to disaster in one form or another and they’ll find themselves worse off that before obtaining what they have.
True humility is more often than not seen as weakness. Those who are humble are not viewed in the best light because they are different. They appear weak to the world but in all actuality these people are far stronger than you would think. Take the example of Jesus giving His life on the cross. He was the perfect example of humility. He humbled Himself to the point of death on the cross. And to do this He had to show extreme strength. He sweated blood in the garden before being betrayed because He was so anxious about what was to come. But in the end He did what He came to do. He showed strength by giving His life in place of our own.
This proverb tells us that when we strive for humility and associate ourselves with the humble rather than the proud and arrogant people, we demonstrate character and spiritual health. And this is viewed much more favorably than the unjust and oppressive attitudes of the arrogant.
What does this look like to us today? How can we take this and apply it in our own lives? It could be as simple as who you choose to associate with. Surround yourself with people who act humbly and do not seek self-gain or attention. Or it could be in the realm of the jobs available. You might choose a job that has lower pay but is ethically sound compared to one with questionable morals and higher wages. Or one final thought. You might choose to maintain a humble attitude and give God all of the credit for the events in your life rather than showing pride at having done it all yourself.
These are just three examples. I am sure you could come up with more if you paused and prayed about it. What could humility look like in YOUR life?
It is better to be materially poor but spiritually rich than to be materially rich but spiritually impoverished!
