Kamalia and BTH finished the Harandar Campaign last night; we are now level 85. Without any level 90 rep grind or additional questline requirement, I can now make Haranir characters.

This toon is the Haranir Mage character who joins the roster of the Minor Mages and will eventually get leveled to 50 for her Heritage Armor. To choose her name, I clicked the name randomizer until I got one that I liked with a “K” added to the front 😛

Her appearance uses all the racial features of the Haranir — bat-like ears, crazy hair, tusks, porcupine quills on the shoulders, fur, clawed feet.

The Den of Echoes storyline of the Harandar Campaign tells that the deep-past ancestors of the Haranir felt called to journey underground because they heard the song of their Goddess. Not all of those ancient people chose to undertake this journey, however, and a possible interpretation or extrapolation of the quest text could be that the Haranir ancestors who stayed behind on the surface underwent divergent evolution to become the Night Elves. So, just for fun, I created another Haranir toon with the appearance choices that minimize or remove all those special features to look as much like a proto-Night Elf as possible.

Well, that, and to be a placeholder to fill the last spot in the Campsite so that when my kids create new toons, those new toons won’t be placed by default in my Campsite.

Wow’s Anniversary is here again — the time of year when my characters who exist mostly for the sake of having all the things get to get levels from quick and easy XP. All of the Minor Mages who are under level 50 (the level required to get Heritage Armor; which is still most of them) are camped out at the Caverns of Time to do the Trivia Quiz daily. As I did last year, I’m also pushing a few characters a little harder with Codex of Chromie runs.

I’ve been leveling my Night Elf and (regular game) Nightborne Mages to 80 so they can go to New Silvermoon and wear fancy new Elvish fashion in Midnight; they both reached the finish line for that goal this week thanks to WoW’s Anniversary. Now I can really get going with leveling my Blood Elf Paladin and Hunter toward 80, for the same objective.

My Lightforged Draenei Mage is the only one of the first four Allied Races from Legion who doesn’t yet have her Heritage Armor. The additional tints of that armor available from Legion Remix gave me an incentive to get her to level 50. With the Anniversary XP buffs up, she zoomed through several levels by doing Dragonriding Races and other easy World Quests in the Dragon Isles this week, and will probably be able to get her Heritage Armor early next week.

During Mists Remix, I leveled a Worgen toon for the purpose of getting the Heritage Armor for that race; after the event was over and I’d done the Heritage Armor questline, I deleted the toon. I’ve felt like I ought to get my Worgen Mage leveled to 50 anyway, so once my Lightforged Draenei hits 50, I’ll start sending my Worgen through the Dragon Isles Dragonriding Races. It shouldn’t be too hard to get her to 50, since she’s already over 40.

Meanwhile, my Timerunning Nightborne Mage has almost finished collecting the raid sets that I was most interested in acquiring. I’ve also been pushing her toward completing the achievement that rewards the “Chronoscholar” title. After I’ve accomplished that, I think I’ll probably send all her Bronze and all her gold over to my Timerunning Highmountain Tauren Enhancement Shaman — and then delete her, since she wasn’t ever intended to be a permanent addition to my roster. Then I can work on getting the Timerunning Shaman, who is intended to permanently join my roster, up to level 80 and buying up the leather, mail, and plate stuff I still kinda want to get.

Of course I need to play a Mage through Legion Remix to get any Mage-specific rewards. I’d been thinking I’d do a Nightborne, since that would fit thematically with the Suramar storyline, and I didn’t yet have the Heritage Armor for that Allied Race. Then I got my Nightborne character in the regular game to level 50, so I thought I’d do a Lightforged Draenei for Legion Remix, because that is now the only one of the original four Allied Races from Legion that I don’t yet have the Heritage Armor for.

Some of the more recent Heritage Armor sets have come with two color variations. With the recent PTR news that there will be race-exclusive alternate tints for the Nightborne and Lightforged Draenei Heritage Armors available in Legion Remix, I’m thinking that I’d better do a Nightborne, not a Lightforged Draenei, for Legion Remix after all. Sartorially, I am much more interested in the alternate tint for the Shal’dorei Heritage Armor than I am in any of the tints of the Lightforged Draenei Heritage Armor. I wonder if Legion Remix will have alternate tints for the other Allied Races introduced in Legion — Void Elves and Highmountain Tauren — as well?

I’d already been thinking about leveling a male Highmountain Tauren Enhancement Shaman — Mr Kamalia — in Legion Remix. Because this event will happen during the busy middle of Fall semester, however, that would be an “only if I have the time and energy after the Mage is done” kind of thing. If there’s a race-exclusive alternate tint of the Highmountain Tauren Heritage Armor to be had, though, that will become a higher priority. And if there’s a race-exclusive alternate tint of the Void Elf Heritage Armor to be had, well, then, I’ll have to level a Void Elf character in Legion Remix, too.

Speaking of alternate tints of Heritage Armor, the news that there will be Story Modes for the final bosses of the Dragonflight raids has me thinking that I should do the Patch 10.2 Emerald Dream Campaign with Keriluna to get the blue tint of the Night Elf Heritage Armor sometime during Midnight. Getting that Heritage Armor tint would have been quite out of reach otherwise, since I generally don’t feel comfortable soloing old raids until at least two expansions later.

Many years ago, when this blog was young (around late Cataclysm, I think), I put together a set of fashion posts in which I grouped the “one of every Race that can be Mages” characters I had at the time in pairs. After awhile, I collected all of my favorite outfits for the group of characters I was now calling the “Minor Mages” into a “Signature Outfits of the Minor Mages” post. That post was huge to begin with, and it got even huger as I added more outfits, and, with the introduction of the Allied Races, more characters.

Since I’ve decided not to try to keep up with having “one of every Race” with the continuing additions of new Allied Races, I took a hard look at my roster of Mages and did some pruning. I kept the alts who took turns at being my “Alliance Main” before Void Elves came along, the alts who I’ve written a big story about, and the alts who I have fun Mogging. The only Allied Races alts who survived this pruning were the ones whose Heritage Armor I either already have or would very much like to get someday.

Then I decided that all the Mages who I was still keeping around ought to have their own “Things my [Race] Mage Wears” posts. I dug into the “Signature Outfits of the Minor Mages” and assorted other posts (usually holiday collections) that featured a lot of the Minor Mages (to provide model variety) and redistributed all that content into the series of posts that just flooded out. I’ve linked all of these posts on my Transmogrification page, and will continue to update them and add new posts in each character’s series as needed — but I’m not planning to make the picture tiles for all these characters.

Well, well, well.
Invites for the War Within public alpha are going out, and the NDA on the War Within select content creators alpha has lifted, and information from the alpha is flooding Wowhead.

Between Blizzard Watch revealing this in their spoiler-coy headline and Wowhead revealing that in their spoiler-coy headline, the first major story beat of War Within is pretty well spoilt even without reading the articles.

I am quite excited about the Warbands concept, and I also quite like the Warbands group picture character selection screen idea. I’ve gotten really used to using the character selection screen to take nice clear pictures of outfits for the Sunday Mog Show, though — even if many of them have really terrible backdrop lighting and need levels adjustment — and I’m going to have to think about where is a place in the game with good, clear, even lighting that I can use to take outfit pictures for the Sunday Mog Show after the Warbands character selection screen goes live.

It seems that Dracthyr will be allowed to be more than just Evokers at some point in War Within. I’ll confess that I haven’t properly played my Evoker enough to understand how her abilities fit together, and that for me, the most fun thing about being a Dracthyr is Soaring. So if I can be a Dracthyr Mage (or Druid or Shaman) and Soar around, that might make being a Dracthyr more appealing to me than being a Dracthyr Evoker has been.

Customization previews for the new Allied Race, the Earthen, are up, and I find myself just as uninterested in rolling one as when they were first announced at Blizzcon. There’s another new race, which I don’t recall from Blizzcon coverage, that has enough customization options to potentially be a later-in-the-expansion Allied Race. They’re called the Harronir, and they appear to be some sort of bat-eared… porcupine? people. Not interested. In fact, I’m Not Interested enough in either of these new Allied Races that I’m once again, as I was right after Blizzcon, contemplating pruning the Minor Mages roster down to characters whom I’ve had for a very long time, characters I have written stories about, and characters of races whose Heritage Armor I would like to maybe get someday — just to break out of the “gotta catch ’em all”/”must have one of everything” mindset.

The most intriguing thing, to me, of what’s fountained out of the alpha thus far is some new ear customizations. Half-Elves are well-established in WoW lore: the High Elves Vereesa and Alleria Windrunner both have Human husbands and Half-Elf children, and Kalecgos is a Half-Elf in his Visage form. With the “Short” ear length customization currently available, Blood Elves and Void Elves can already RP as more elf-like Half-Elves. The “Pointed” ear customizations that have been discovered for Humans and Kul Tiran Humans will allow for RP as more human-like Half-Elves. Or, perhaps, they could allow someone to RP as a full-blooded Eversong Elf with a stouter body shape. The “Round” ear customizations that have been discovered for Blood Elves and Void Elves seem like a workaround to allow someone to RP as a Human with a more slender body shape.

I’ll save my thoughts on Transmogrification stuff that’s been previewed so far until the Season 1 Class sets for my three favorite Classes have all been shown; so far, only one of them has been written up.

Somehow, my Highmountain Tauren Druid, Kasheena, had managed to make it from her initial Allied Race level of 20 to a post-level-squish level of 42. She’d done the first few chapters of Highmountain, a little bit of the Druid Order Hall Campaign, Mulgore, a few years of Brewfest and WoW’s Anniversary dailies, and a smattering of other stuff.
Although I’d ignored the Winds of Wisdom buff last week because it was World Quest Bonus Week and I was busy with my level 60 characters, this week I suddenly realized that this was my chance to push Kasheena through to level 50 and finally, finally get her Heritage Armor. Finishing up the Highmountain main storyline, plus the Highmountain bonus objectives, opening up Suramar after she dinged 45, and doing some Legion Professions quests (she is an Herbalist/Miner), got her there in two play sessions.

I was very surprised to discover that the totems on the back of the Highmountain Heritage Armor are part of the chestpiece item, not a backpiece item.
~*~*~
Then I went and pre-ordered the Epic edition of Dragonflight and used the Boost on Kasheena; now she’s in Ardenweald with Kamalia and Kaurinka.

Kasheena just needs to get to Honored with Marasmius and Court of Night to be able to use the butterflymoth backpacks; Kaurinka will continue doing All The Things to get the other Shadowlands leather stuff I still want.
I decided to pre-order Dragonflight now and use the Boost on Kasheena (instead of saving it for my Tauren Mage) because I have for a rather long time in the back of my mind been thinking that for the next expansion it would be neat to be able to bring both a Mulgore Tauren (Kamalia) and a Highmountain Tauren (Kasheena, replacing Kerisa/Kaurinka in my roster of Mains) as well as both a Blood Elf (Kaelinda), and a Void Elf (Kaelyla).
~*~*~
(… now I’m so tempted — at this moment, at least — to buy Boosts for all my other sweet Mulgore Tauren girls, though I know that would be a tremendously gross expenditure… and when Shadowlands gets folded into Chromie Time I’ll probably be able to Mog with Shadowlands stuff with them without needing them to be level 60… and it would be better to wait to do Boosts until after the pre-patch goes live and I can roll my Tauren Rogue and Mage, anyhow…)

Kinevra hit Exalted with 7th Legion and Proudmoore Admiralty this week, which prompted me to finally go finish the last two chapters of the 7.0 Alliance War Campaign. Then I could go recruit the Dark Iron Dwarves — because no matter how much I tried to talk myself out of recruiting all the Allied Races, I just couldn’t resist pairing up each of the Minor Mages with an Allied Race counterpart:

Kivrinne: Undead Mage, 46, Frost
Kymberlea: Worgen Mage, 32, Fire

Kaoling: Huojin Pandaren Mage, 31, Arcane
Koralyra: Tushui Pandaren Mage, 20, Frost

Keriluna: Night Elf Mage, 32, Arcane
Koralythria: Nightborne Mage, 20, Arcane

Kaprikka: Draenei Mage, 92, Arcane/Frost
Krystaliza: Lightforged Draenei Mage, 20, Arcane

Kelilla: Gnome Mage, 42, Frost
Katrinka: Mechagnome Mage, 20, Frost

Kermione: Goblin Mage, 33, Fire
Khariba: Vulpera Mage, 20, Fire

Kikimaia: Troll Mage, 36, Frost
Kilauea: Zandalari Troll Mage, 20, Fire

Kenosha: Orc Mage, 33, Fire
Keshona: Mag’har Orc Mage, 20, Fire

Khrissalys: Dwarf Mage, 30, Fire
Kronakka: Dark Iron Dwarf Mage, 20, Fire

I have yet to do the 7.1 Alliance War Campaign so that I can recruit the Kul Tirans, but my Kul Tiran Mage will go in with my major characters, like my Void Elf Mage did.

Now that I’ve done (almost) all of them, I think that the Highmountain Tauren, Zandalari Troll, and Dark Iron Dwarf recruitment questlines/scenarios were the most epic, and the Vulpera one was the most fun.

Now that we know what 9.0 will be, it’s time to think about my priorities for the remaining duration of Battle for Azeroth.

1) Kinevra needs to get to 120 and do the Alliance War Campaign while there will still be enough folks in BfA LFR for there to be reasonable queue times. This is a primary goal partly for seeing the Alliance side of the story and partly for being able to recruit the Kul Tirans and roll a gorgeous curvy ringlet-haired Kul Tiran Mage.

2) Kaelinda needs to get to 120 and get the Sin’dorei Heritage Armor.

3) Kerisa needs to get to 120 so that she can wear all of the Island Expeditions stuff I’ve collected off of the AH for her and to be in position to potentially be my first Horde character to level in 9.0 (because Balance Druids, with their self-heals, are more robust than Mages).

4) After reaching 120 and kitting themselves up in Benthic gear (they all already have full sets of tokens awaiting them), Kinevra, Kaelinda, and Kerisa need to go smack the Jadefire Masters and Opulence around until they cough up the Phoenixfire Staff and the crown, respectively. A lesser degree of LFR priority is collecting the Uldir and Eternal Palace LFR cloth sets.

5) Kamalia needs to get her Heart of Azeroth to level 70 (currently at 65) so she can see all of the dragon stories currently available, and then to whatever level is required for the additional bit(s) of dragon story that will be in 8.3.

6) Kinevra would like to collect the Darkshore Warfront set. Kerithian may not need to get to 120 if the Night Warrior customization option unlocks for her when Kinevra does the Darkshore Warfront introduction questline.

7) Void Elf, Highmountain Tauren, Kul Tiran, Vulpera, and maaaaybe Nightborne alts will eventually want to be leveled for their Heritage Armors, but this will remain a low priority, long game project. Between limited space remaining on my account and alt fatigue, I’ve decided that I will only create additional Allied Races characters if I like the Heritage Armor of that race well enough to want to level from scratch to get it.

Over at Blizzard Watch yesterday, Matt Rossi made an argument, one more time, that the Alliance should have High Elves as an Allied Race. It’s a popular idea, and for good reasons.

If the Alliance were to get High Elves as an Allied Race, the counterpart Allied Race for the Horde should be the Taunka.

Like the High Elves already being a long-time Allied Race of the Alliance, the Taunka are already an Allied Race of the Horde and have been ever since Wrath of the Lich King. We already have four types of playable Elves (and a few more types of non-playable elves) and three types of Human (four if you include the Forsaken), so a third type of Tauren shouldn’t be a problem, either. Mr Rossi discusses a compelling story hook for why High Elves could be involved in the concluding sequence of this expansion. The Taunka don’t have a story hook into this expansion, but if 9.0 is a Death-themed excursion to the Shadowlands, the Taunka, who live around the edges of the Lich King’s domain in the physical world, would have a vested interest in the thread of the 9.0 plot involving the schemes of Bolvar-the-Lich-King. And hey, both High Elves and Taunka would be Allied Races that could be allowed to be Death Knights!

If we were ever to get High Elves and Taunka as Allied Races, though, there really ought to be a new model for Taunka women, giving them the same facial structure as Taunka men, instead of leaving them as differently-scaled regular Tauren women like they are now. Just sayin’…

Hypothetical Allies

One of the things I most appreciate about the implementation of the Allied Races is the ability to Preview all of their customization options on the character creation screen, even if you haven’t yet fulfilled the requirements to recruit them.

Thus, I already know what my Kul Tiran Mage will look like, more or less, whenever I manage to get Kaylynda to level 120, Exalted with the Proudmoore Admiralty, and through the “Tides of Vengeance” segment of the Alliance War Campaign:

Sometimes I like to play around with what my characters of the other Allied Races might look like, were I ever to get around to recruiting them.

It’s nice, on occasion, to be able to use the Dressing Room to show how an outfit would look on a character who is not one of my favored races — a big reason why I keep the Minor Mages around, in fact — and there have been at least two occasions when I’ve wished that I already had that golden-haired Lightforged Draenei.

But even if I do eventually get around to creating all of these Allied Races characters, it’ll be a bright sunny day in Helheim before I ever get any of them besides the Kul Tiran their Heritage Armors. I’m having a hard enough time as-is finding time to work on leveling my Void Elf and Highmountain Tauren for their Heritage Armors.
