I've had an issue with check-case-conflict raising all my changed files as conflicts. I even tested in a new repo with one file and it was the same result so I thought I would get AI to try and fix the issue as I don't know the first thing about rust. If it's garbage please just close but thought it may be better than just raising an issue.

Summary

  • Fix false positives in check-case-conflict when a file is both tracked and staged

Problem

When running hk run pre-commit, the check-case-conflict utility reports conflicts for files that only exist once (e.g., main.go). This happens because:

  1. git ls-files returns all tracked files
  2. The {{files}} argument contains staged files
  3. These lists are combined without deduplication
  4. A file appearing in both lists is incorrectly flagged as a "case conflict"

Solution

Deduplicate the combined file list using a HashSet before checking for conflicts.

Summary of Changes

Hello @safinn, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request addresses a critical bug in the check-case-conflict utility that led to erroneous case conflict reports. The problem arose because the utility combined tracked and staged file lists without deduplication, causing files present in both to be incorrectly flagged. The solution implements a HashSet to ensure all file paths are unique before conflict checking, effectively eliminating these false positives and enhancing the reliability of the pre-commit hook. A new regression test has been added to validate the fix.

Highlights

  • False Positive Fix: Resolves an issue in check-case-conflict where false positives were reported for files that were both tracked by Git and staged.
  • Deduplication Logic: Introduces a HashSet to deduplicate the combined list of repository files and staged files, preventing the same file from being processed multiple times and incorrectly flagged as a conflict.
  • Regression Test: Adds a new regression test, test_no_conflict_with_duplicates, to specifically verify that duplicate file entries no longer cause false positives.
Changelog
  • src/cli/util/check_case_conflict.rs
    • Added HashSet import from std::collections.
    • Modified the CheckCaseConflict::run method to use a HashSet for deduplicating file paths, combining repo_files and self.files into a unique list.
    • Added a new test test_no_conflict_with_duplicates to ensure that duplicate file entries do not trigger false positives.
Activity
  • The author, safinn, identified a recurring false positive issue with the check-case-conflict utility.
  • The author utilized AI assistance to implement the fix, noting their unfamiliarity with Rust, and proactively submitted the solution.
  • A new regression test has been included to validate the correctness of the deduplication logic.

Code Review

This pull request correctly fixes a false positive in check-case-conflict where a file that is both tracked and staged would be flagged as a conflict with itself. The solution to deduplicate the file list using a HashSet is idiomatic and effective. My feedback includes one comment on the new test case, which doesn't correctly function as a regression test for the fix.

Comment thread src/cli/util/check_case_conflict.rs Outdated
… positives

When a file is both tracked by git (via `git ls-files`) and passed as an
argument (e.g., staged files in a pre-commit hook), the same file appeared
twice in the combined list. This caused `find_case_conflicts` to incorrectly
flag it as a case conflict.

Fix by using a HashSet to deduplicate the combined file list before checking
for conflicts.
