Summary

Wires up the edit rule flow for the Alerting V2 rule form so that editing a rule correctly populates the form with existing rule data and updates (PATCHes) the rule instead of creating a new one.

Changes

New files

File Purpose
form/utils/rule_request_mappers.ts Centralised mappers between FormValues ↔ API schemas. Exports mapFormValuesToRuleRequest, mapFormValuesToCreateRequest, mapFormValuesToUpdateRequest, mapRuleResponseToFormValues, and the RuleRequestCommon type.
form/hooks/use_update_rule.ts useUpdateRule hook — thin useMutation wrapper that PATCHes /internal/alerting/v2/rule/{id} using mapFormValuesToUpdateRequest.
form/hooks/query_key_factory.ts Centralised React Query key factory (ruleFormKeys) for the form package's internal queries.
form/utils/rule_request_mappers.test.ts 34 unit tests for all four mapper functions, including a roundtrip test.
form/hooks/use_update_rule.test.tsx 12 unit tests for the useUpdateRule hook (endpoint, payload, null coercion, toasts, error handling).

Modified files

File What changed
form/standalone_rule_form.tsx Added initialValues and ruleId props. Deep-merges initialValues over query-derived defaults via useMemo. Passes ruleId to RuleForm.
form/rule_form.tsx Threaded ruleId into RuleFormContent. Conditionally calls useUpdateRule (edit) vs useCreateRule (new) when no external onSubmit is provided.
form/hooks/use_create_rule.ts Replaced inline mapping logic with mapFormValuesToCreateRequest import, making the hook a thin mutation wrapper.
form/hooks/use_data_fields.ts Uses ruleFormKeys.dataFields() instead of inline query key.
form/hooks/use_query_columns.ts Uses ruleFormKeys.queryColumns() instead of inline query key.
form/index.tsx / index.ts Exports new mapper functions and RuleRequestCommon type.
rule_form_page.tsx (plugin) EditRuleFormPageContent calls mapRuleResponseToFormValues on the fetched rule and passes initialValues + ruleId to StandaloneRuleForm. onSuccess invalidates app-level React Query cache (ruleKeys.detail + ruleKeys.lists) before navigating.
use_create_rule.test.tsx Updated expected payload key ordering to match refactored mapper output.
rule_form.test.tsx Added 3 tests: createRule called without ruleId, updateRule called with ruleId, external onSubmit takes precedence.
rule_form_page.test.tsx Mocked StandaloneRuleForm to isolate page logic (avoids pre-existing monaco-editor resolution issue). Added tests verifying ruleId, initialValues, and query props in both create and edit modes.

Key design decisions

  • null coercion for update payloadsmapFormValuesToUpdateRequest explicitly sets grouping, recovery_policy, and state_transition to null (not undefined) so the PATCH API interprets them as intentional removals.
  • Cache invalidation — After a successful update, the plugin-level QueryClient invalidates both the rule detail and rule list caches, preventing stale data on subsequent edits.
  • Separate QueryClient instances — The form package uses its own QueryClient for internal queries (preview, columns, fields). The plugin's QueryClient manages useFetchRule / rule list caches. Cache invalidation targets the plugin-level client.

Checklist

  • Any text added follows EUI's writing guidelines, uses sentence case text and includes i18n support
  • Unit or functional tests were updated or added to match the most common scenarios
  • If a plugin configuration key changed, check if it needs to be allowlisted in the cloud and added to the docker list
  • This was checked for breaking HTTP API changes, and any breaking changes have been approved by the breaking-change committee. The release_note:breaking label should be applied in these situations.
  • Flaky Test Runner was used on any tests changed
  • The PR description includes the appropriate Release Notes section, and the correct release_note:* label is applied per the guidelines
  • Review the backport guidelines and apply applicable backport:* labels.

Identify risks

Risk Severity Mitigation
null coercion may behave differently if API schema changes Low Mapper tests explicitly verify null vs undefined; schema types are imported from @kbn/alerting-v2-schemas
Cache invalidation relies on matching query key structure Low Both the page and useFetchRule use the shared ruleKeys factory from the plugin's query_key_factory.ts

Looking good to me, tested locally and works as expected. Skimmed through the tests.
I just have two nits.

onSuccess?: () => void;
}

export const useUpdateRule = ({ http, notifications, ruleId, onSuccess }: UseUpdateRuleProps) => {

This works but you can "simplify" a bit the flow, useMutation returned mutate's function can be called with optionals onSuccess, onError, onSettled functions, so you don't really need to provide this in this hook...

Notice how I provide onSuccess callback to the mutate function and not in the useCreateNotificationPolicy hook.

 const { mutate: createPolicy, isLoading: isCreating } = useCreateNotificationPolicy();
[...]
createPolicy(data, { onSuccess })

I'm gonna merge this and address it in that other PR you are reviewing. Just to reduce churn.

You probably can do this in the useCreate/useEdit mutation hooks directly? example:

return useMutation<NotificationPolicyResponse, Error, UpdateNotificationPolicyVariables>({
    mutationKey: notificationPolicyKeys.update(),
    mutationFn: ({ id, data }) => notificationPoliciesApi.updateNotificationPolicy(id, data),
    onSuccess: () => {
      queryClient.invalidateQueries({ queryKey: notificationPolicyKeys.lists(), exact: false });
      toasts.addSuccess(
        i18n.translate('xpack.alertingV2.notificationPolicy.updateSuccess', {
          defaultMessage: 'Notification policy updated successfully',
        })
      );
    },

Yes! Actually though, the hooks are in the form package, and this is the rule form page from so I have to pass the onSuccess to the StandaloneRuleForm to be provided as a callback for useMutate.

## Summary

### Key capabilities

- **ES|QL-native rule evaluation** — Rules are defined as ES|QL queries
with optional WHERE clause conditions, evaluated on a configurable
schedule
- **Alert lifecycle management** — Full episode tracking with pending →
active → recovering → inactive state transitions, including configurable
alert delay (consecutive breaches / duration)
- **Event-driven architecture** — Alert events and actions are stored in
dedicated data streams (`.alerting-events`, `.alerting-actions`) with
ES|QL views for querying
- **Notification dispatch pipeline** — A multi-step dispatcher that
matches alert episodes to notification policies, handles
throttling/suppression, and triggers Kibana Workflows using encrypted
API keys
- **Notification policies** — CRUD APIs and UI for creating notification
policies with KQL-based rule matching, workflow integration, and API key
management
- **Rule authoring UI** — A shared rule form package
(`@kbn/alerting-v2-rule-form`) usable standalone or embedded in
Discover, with ES|QL editor, WHERE clause condition editing, recovery
configuration, and live query preview
- **Rule management UI** — Full rule list with pagination,
enable/disable, clone, edit, and delete operations
- **APM instrumentation** — Middleware and decorators for tracing rule
execution and client operations

### Architecture highlights

- **InversifyJS DI** — All services use constructor injection with typed
tokens, scoped per-request or singleton as appropriate
- **Pipeline pattern** — Rule executor and dispatcher use composable
step-based pipelines
- **Saved Objects** — Rules stored as hidden saved objects; notification
policies stored as encrypted saved objects (for API key protection)
- **Feature privileges** — Dedicated Kibana feature with read/all
privileges for RBAC

jeramysoucy pushed a commit to jeramysoucy/kibana that referenced this pull request Apr 1, 2026
- **ES|QL-native rule evaluation** — Rules are defined as ES|QL queries
with optional WHERE clause conditions, evaluated on a configurable
schedule
- **Alert lifecycle management** — Full episode tracking with pending →
active → recovering → inactive state transitions, including configurable
alert delay (consecutive breaches / duration)
- **Event-driven architecture** — Alert events and actions are stored in
dedicated data streams (`.alerting-events`, `.alerting-actions`) with
ES|QL views for querying
- **Notification dispatch pipeline** — A multi-step dispatcher that
matches alert episodes to notification policies, handles
throttling/suppression, and triggers Kibana Workflows using encrypted
API keys
- **Notification policies** — CRUD APIs and UI for creating notification
policies with KQL-based rule matching, workflow integration, and API key
management
- **Rule authoring UI** — A shared rule form package
(`@kbn/alerting-v2-rule-form`) usable standalone or embedded in
Discover, with ES|QL editor, WHERE clause condition editing, recovery
configuration, and live query preview
- **Rule management UI** — Full rule list with pagination,
enable/disable, clone, edit, and delete operations
- **APM instrumentation** — Middleware and decorators for tracing rule
execution and client operations

- **InversifyJS DI** — All services use constructor injection with typed
tokens, scoped per-request or singleton as appropriate
- **Pipeline pattern** — Rule executor and dispatcher use composable
step-based pipelines
- **Saved Objects** — Rules stored as hidden saved objects; notification
policies stored as encrypted saved objects (for API key protection)
- **Feature privileges** — Dedicated Kibana feature with read/all
privileges for RBAC
