[Alerting v2] Update rule attribues #252754
Conversation
- Introduced new schemas for rule metadata, schedule, evaluation, and recovery policies in `rule_data_schema.ts`. - Adjusted the `RulesApi` service to handle the new rule data structure for creating and updating rules. - Updated tests and utility functions to reflect the new schema and ensure compatibility with the updated rule attributes.

LGTM! I left some comments.
@dominiqueclarke FYI, this PR will change the rule schema and it will affect your PR.

nit: It feels that this should be a top-level field like the schedule.

I think is better if we move the RuleResponse from x-pack/platform/plugins/shared/alerting_v2/server/lib/rules_client/types.ts into @kbn/alerting-v2-schemas and import it both in server and public. @dominiqueclarke also wanted the response on her PR #250961.

We decided with @tiamliu and @joana-cps to not let users update the kind in the first phase because of the complexities with how to handle active alerts when changing the kind from alert to signal.

Let's create a util that will construct the nextAttrs object as with the create method. The client is starting to grow a lot and it will make it easier to read and reason.

Let's move the utils to a file in x-pack/platform/plugins/shared/alerting_v2/server/lib/rules_clientutils.ts to avoid having the file grow to much.

Could you please add some unit tests?

As discussed offline, I'll add the unit tests in the recovery PR
## Summary ### Key capabilities - **ES|QL-native rule evaluation** — Rules are defined as ES|QL queries with optional WHERE clause conditions, evaluated on a configurable schedule - **Alert lifecycle management** — Full episode tracking with pending → active → recovering → inactive state transitions, including configurable alert delay (consecutive breaches / duration) - **Event-driven architecture** — Alert events and actions are stored in dedicated data streams (`.alerting-events`, `.alerting-actions`) with ES|QL views for querying - **Notification dispatch pipeline** — A multi-step dispatcher that matches alert episodes to notification policies, handles throttling/suppression, and triggers Kibana Workflows using encrypted API keys - **Notification policies** — CRUD APIs and UI for creating notification policies with KQL-based rule matching, workflow integration, and API key management - **Rule authoring UI** — A shared rule form package (`@kbn/alerting-v2-rule-form`) usable standalone or embedded in Discover, with ES|QL editor, WHERE clause condition editing, recovery configuration, and live query preview - **Rule management UI** — Full rule list with pagination, enable/disable, clone, edit, and delete operations - **APM instrumentation** — Middleware and decorators for tracing rule execution and client operations ### Architecture highlights - **InversifyJS DI** — All services use constructor injection with typed tokens, scoped per-request or singleton as appropriate - **Pipeline pattern** — Rule executor and dispatcher use composable step-based pipelines - **Saved Objects** — Rules stored as hidden saved objects; notification policies stored as encrypted saved objects (for API key protection) - **Feature privileges** — Dedicated Kibana feature with read/all privileges for RBAC --- ## Contained PRs <details> <summary><strong>Core Engine & Plugin Init</strong> (12 PRs)</summary> - ## Summary ### Key capabilities - **ES|QL-native rule evaluation** — Rules are defined as ES|QL queries with optional WHERE clause conditions, evaluated on a configurable schedule - **Alert lifecycle management** — Full episode tracking with pending → active → recovering → inactive state transitions, including configurable alert delay (consecutive breaches / duration) - **Event-driven architecture** — Alert events and actions are stored in dedicated data streams (`.alerting-events`, `.alerting-actions`) with ES|QL views for querying - **Notification dispatch pipeline** — A multi-step dispatcher that matches alert episodes to notification policies, handles throttling/suppression, and triggers Kibana Workflows using encrypted API keys - **Notification policies** — CRUD APIs and UI for creating notification policies with KQL-based rule matching, workflow integration, and API key management - **Rule authoring UI** — A shared rule form package (`@kbn/alerting-v2-rule-form`) usable standalone or embedded in Discover, with ES|QL editor, WHERE clause condition editing, recovery configuration, and live query preview - **Rule management UI** — Full rule list with pagination, enable/disable, clone, edit, and delete operations - **APM instrumentation** — Middleware and decorators for tracing rule execution and client operations ### Architecture highlights - **InversifyJS DI** — All services use constructor injection with typed tokens, scoped per-request or singleton as appropriate - **Pipeline pattern** — Rule executor and dispatcher use composable step-based pipelines - **Saved Objects** — Rules stored as hidden saved objects; notification policies stored as encrypted saved objects (for API key protection) - **Feature privileges** — Dedicated Kibana feature with read/all privileges for RBAC --- ## Contained PRs <details> <summary><strong>Core Engine & Plugin Init</strong> (12 PRs)</summary> - Summary
Updates the alerting v2 rule attributes to match the new rule schema specification.
Rule attributes restructured — Flat top-level fields (
name, tags, query, timeField, lookbackWindow, groupingKey) replaced with a nested structure:metadata— name, owner, labels, time_fieldschedule— every, lookbackevaluation— query.base, query.trigger.conditionrecovery_policy,state_transition,grouping,no_data,notification_policies(all optional)API and Saved Object schemas decoupled — The API input/output types (
CreateRuleData,UpdateRuleData,RuleResponsein@kbn/alerting-v2-schemasandrules_client/types.ts) are now defined independently from the SO persistence schema (rule_saved_object_attributes/v1.ts). Explicit conversion helpers (apiCreateToSoAttributes,soAttributesToApiResponse) inRulesClientare the only coupling point, giving us a seam to evolve storage independently of the public API (e.g. for rule versioning).enabledis now server-managed — Not part of the create/update API input. Set totrueon creation, preserved on update. The executor pipeline checks it and halts withrule_disabledif false. Enable/disable will be exposed via dedicated endpoints in a follow-up.UI — Rules list and create/edit pages updated to reflect the new schema structure.
