The option is deprecated together with the ifcfg-suse settings plugin. Selecting the plugin has no effect at runtime, beside logging a warning. Drop the configure option. Note, that if $distro_plugins was set to "ifcfg-suse", it was also used to autodetect --with-hostname-persist=suse. Now, autodetect the hostname persist mode based on presence of /etc/SuSE-release file.
Even Gentoo disables this plugin since before 0.9.8 release of NetworkManager. Time to say goodbye. If somebody happens to show up to maintain it, we may resurrect it later. If "$distro_plugins=ifnet" was set, configure.ac would use that to autodetect --with-hostname-persist=gentoo. Drop that autodetect part too.

The ifnet plugin is not maintained since long time, so LGTM. If someone still configures with --enable-ifnet, maybe we should print |

The same could be done for I dislike the change in behavior how we detect the persist-hostname option, but I again think that nobody cares. |

Gentoo maintainer here: I'm fine with dropping it. We have been disabling it unconditionally since 2014. |

When NM is restarted and a new object-manager is created, ensure that signal handlers are disconnected from the old one. I think it's time to drop the
ifnetsettings plugin. Please review.Note that
configure.acused to partly detect--with-hostname-persist=based on the chosen distro plugin. Please note that this might change some behavior there. Does it affect anybody in a bad way?Probably distributions should anyway explicitly select
--with-hostname-perist.
