Until before 1.2.0, NetworkManager would always write resolv.conf as file, but
if /etc/resolv.conf was a symlink, it would follow the link instead of
replacing it with a file ([1], [2]).

With 1.2.0, we dropped that behavior and added a new 'rc-manager=none' which
writes resolv.conf to /var/run/NetworkManager and symlinks resolv.conf [3].
In case resolv.conf being already a symlink to another target, it would
not be replaced [4].
Also, we added 'rc-manager=file', which always writes /etc/resolv.conf as
file [5].

With 1.4.0, we will rename 'rc-manager=none' to 'rc-manager=symlink' [6].

This commit adds yet another 'rc-manager=file-follow' which restores
the pre-1.2 behavior.

This is a controversial change, because of adding more and more options. Instead we could modify the existing rc-manager=file.
I prefer this, for two reasons:

  • we already released 1.2.0 with a different rc-manager=file behavior
  • I prefer the rc-manager=file behavior over rc-manager=file-follow. I would not replace rc-manager=file with an IMO less desired behavior.

NetworkManager#7
Before, we would first check whether the file is immuable before
parsing main.rc-manager setting. That means, if you configured

  [main]
  dns=default
  rc-manager=unmanged

it would still first try to detect whether the file is immutable.
The result of course is only minor, e.g. showing up in logging.
Also, an immutable resolv.conf would supporess a warning about
a bogus rc-manager setting.

Also, when selecting rc-manager=symlink and resolv.conf is a symlink
to an immutable file, we don't actually care about that. The reason is,
that if the link-target is not /var/run/NetworkManager/resolv.conf,
we anyway wouldn't modify the file.

The effect of this change is minor and in logging you would see:
  dns-mgr: init: dns=(null), rc-manager=symlink
dns-mgr: update-resolv-conf: write internal file /var/run/NetworkManager/resolv.conf succeeded but don't update /etc/resolv.conf as it points to /some/where/else
instead of
  dns-mgr: init: dns=(null), rc-manager=immutable
  dns-mgr: update-resolv-conf: write internal file /var/run/NetworkManager/resolv.conf succeeded

Note that symlinks cannot have file attributes.
With
  [main]
  #dns=

we would see in the log:
  dns-mgr: init: dns=(null), rc-manager=symlink

Instead, it should be
  dns-mgr: init: dns=default, rc-manager=symlink

Also, we should avoid logging NULL values with "%s", although
glib's printf is fine with that.

The unmanaged flags PLATFORM_INIT indicates whether UDEV is done
initializing the device. We should not handle IP config changes
before that pointer.

This avoids codepaths that require the permanent MAC address of the
device. We should not freeze the permanent MAC address before
UDEV initialized the device, for two reasons:

- getting the permanent MAC address using ethtool is racy as
UDEV might still rename the interface.
- freezing a fake permanent MAC address should only happen after
UDEV is done configuring the MAC address of software devices.

…oved_track()

We can get a platform signal for any number of reasons. In particular,
we can get a signal that the object exists in platform, while the object
is tracked as zombie.

"Zombies" are objects that we once actively configured, but now no
longer and thus need to remove them. We remember that we need to delete
the object in kernel.

The assertion was wrong. We don't need to handle the case "in_platform"
and linked in "os_zombie_lst" specially.

…oved_track()

…oved_track()

We can get a platform signal for any number of reasons. In particular,
we can get a signal that the object is present in platform, while the object
is tracked as zombie.

"Zombies" are objects that were actively configured by NetworkManager, but
now no longer and thus will need to be removed. We remember them as objects
that we need to delete.

The assertion was wrong. We don't need to handle the case "in_platform"
and linked in "os_zombie_lst" specially. If we get a signal that the
object exists while being a zombie, that is fine and not something to
handle specially.

When cloud-init job (metadata service crawler) starts, it sends the
SIGTERM signal to nm-cloud-setup and force the nm-cloud-setup to
restart, however, because the error is not initialized as NULL in
`_init_start_cancelled_cb()` before it is set, nm-cloud-setup will hit
a dumped core.

TO fix it, initialize the error as NULL in `_init_start_cancelled_cb()`.

…temd_resolved_resolve_cb()

This can lead to a crash. The code might continue to call
system_resolver_resolve(), then it has no more cancellable.
That means, if the task gets cancelled, then the callback
will still return and result in a crash.

There is no need to cancel or clear the cancellable during
normal operation. It will be cleaned up at the end.

This leads to an assertion error (or possibly crash):

It's pretty pointless to log

  <trace> [1653389116.6288] dhcp4 (br0): client event 7
  <debug> [1653389116.6288] dhcp4 (br0): received OFFER of 192.168.121.110 from 192.168.121.1

where the obscure event #7 is only telling you that we are going
to log something. Handle logging events first.

In general, drop the "client event %d" message and make sure that all
code paths log something (useful), so we can see in the log that the
event was reached.
