A Late Valentine Gift: The Learning Labs Pop-Up at NYSCI

I spent Saturday representing Hive NYC and Mozilla Webmaker at the New York Hall of Science’s Learning Lab Pop-Up and it was wonderfully surreal at times. I spent five transformative years at NYSCI. I worked on some incredible projects, sharpened many of my ideas about digital tools in education and worked with a plethora of talented, warm and dedicated people.

In Hive, we talk about networked learning constantly. At times it can seem ephemeral and elusive, but at NYSCI I experienced a heady and visceral example of how it works on the ground. I experienced the network both from an individual view (cross-pollination of jobs, people and ideas) and how it works beyond individuals (diffusion of ideas, pathways for people and expanded participation).

Let me see if I can map this a bit. The event was part of NYSCI’s IMLS Learning Labs Grant. The Learning Lab idea is an attempt to spread the YOUmedia idea and practice. Here alone we see a network: Ideas and programs funded and championed by MacArthur’s Digital Media and Learning and including thought leaders like Mimi Ito (Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out), Nichole Pinkard (Digital Youth Network/YOUmedia) that have now manifested in two Hive NYC organizations (DreamYard YOUmedia, NYSCI) and inspiring others (Brooklyn Public Library’s Info Commons Space).

The event format, the “Learning Party” or “Pop-UP” was remixed by NYSCI from the model that Hive NYC and Mozilla have developed. The model is inspired in part by the professional hack jams and the informal learning practices Hive embodies. It wasn’t lost on me that we basically used the same space and staff that Jess Klein and I did when we collaborated on an early iteration of this model for the NYSCI/Hive Earth Day Hack Jam three years ago. Add to that the NYSCI team leveraging Hive NYC members and friends like World Up, Pixel Academy and Scratch, and it felt exactly what the Pop-Ups are supposed to feel like: A Hive Learning Network experience compressed into one physical space and a set amount of time that then feeds learning experiences back into the ecosystem.

All of this was housed in NYSCI’s new Maker Space which itself is a manifestation of a web of opportunities and energy, like being the east coast host/driver of World Maker Faire (of which Hive NYC has participated each year) and NYSCI’s commitment to a Making as Learning ethos.

The Maker Space itself is incredible and embraces a wide definition of making that feels deeply participatory. It also sits squarely on their exhibition floor, not separated or siloed from other experiences people are having in the science center (in this case a very cool, youth culture/interest-focused Tony Hawk Rad Science of skateboarding exhibition, you should definitely go and see it.)

One place where Hive NYC has not been as successful as we had hoped, is in charting network provided pathways for youth to navigate and grow from experience to experience. Ideally these pathways are both self directed by youth and guided along the way by educators, mentors, teachers, organizations and parents. Saturday I saw an example of how these pathways are beginning to emerge and be represented by connected youth. Three teens who were involved in the Pop-Up were all Hive NYC Super Users! We need to surface and nurture more stories like these:

Ben learned about the event because he follows our various communication channels. Ben is a member of Rev—’s Pop Squad, and came with us to help Hive NYC be awesome at MozFest 2012. He jumped right in to help me facilitate Popcorn Maker mentoring at the Pop-Up. He even wrote about his experiences that day on the Maker Space blog.

Valeria, a long time NYSCI Explainer (I met her for the first time when she was 12 and was in our NYSCI podcasting after-school program) and lives in the local Corona, Queens community NYSCI sits. She was also on the first Hive NYC youth council which gave Hive our name (now a global brand), and on the planning committee for the third Emoti-Con Festival.

Sharon has participated in Hive NYC organization programs at Girls Write Now, Eyebeam, and Global Kids while also being on two youth councils, volunteered for Hive at Maker Faire, was our first Huffington Post Teen blogger and has done other youth reporting assignments for Hive NYC. She is now a Freshman at Columbia University and works at NYSCI on their awesome Explainer TV program.

The event was Connected Learning in action. The various activity stations were all programmed with themes that interest teens: hacking, music, games, making, viral videos, animation and all without a predetermined “path” or dictated way to choose which experiences to do. Some floated and then settled, some made a point of experiencing each station, and some like Philip, stayed at one station deep diving on “popping” an upcoming video game release video for almost four hours using Popcorn Maker.

There was hang-out spaces that were comfortable and inviting. There was pizza, drinks and music. It was fun. Socializing ruled the afternoon, friends and siblings came together, new relationships were built (“I am in Manhattan but can use the subway, can we exchange Facebook pages so we can hangout?”) and it was truly a party.

The room was stocked with multi-generational adults from college-age mentors to informal educators to teachers and parents. Some of these were helping to run the Pop-Up and some were participants. I talked and interacted with public school teachers, parent volunteers, researchers, after-school community leaders, informal educators, makers and young adult mentors. It was the most visceral example of the Connected Learning Principles and the Mozilla Mentor Community that I have experienced recently.

So let me wind this up by saying that I am sure all of us experience confusion and doubt as we embark on this work. Are we making a difference? Are we talking and championing the right ideas and strategies? How do we stop talking about it and start doing it? By Friday afternoon I was sort of in a mini-existential crisis mode about all of this (aren’t we all by Friday at 6:15 PM?) and the NYSCI Learning Lab Pop-Up was just the bucket of cold water my soul needed to pick myself up and get back into the fight. Webmaker Mentors in 2013

AN INFLECTION POINT

We’re at an inflection point with learning and making. What was once simmering quietly in makerspaces and classrooms is now boiling. Makers and mentors, and all sorts of hackers and radical educators in between, are the key players.

The maker movement, iconized by MAKE: Magazine but is much deeper and broader than that, has hit mainstream. Hundreds of thousands of people show up at Maker Faires, and contributions to sites like Instructables and YouTube tutorial videos are innumerable. Toy stores sell kits, and anyone from a scout to a senior citizen can take a workshop at their skill level. Makers bootstrap, and they hack. These are people with a DIY ethic and an affinity to sharing what they made and how they made it.

There’s also another movement reaching critical mass: a learning movement. It’s teachers, educators, museum curators, after-school coaches – in short, mentors who cop a DIY attitude towards learning. Similar to the maker movement, they care about tinkering and interest-driven projects. They care about making, not rote memorization or other staid pedagogies of the past. They blend online and offline experiences, they focus on peer learning, and they are challenging traditional educational institutions with new modes of assessment, accreditation and collaboration.

These two groups, the makers and the mentors, are coming together. And they’re creating a smart grid for learning. If it all goes well, it will shake up education, it will shake up employment, and it will shake up the way we see and tinker with the world.

WHY MENTORS

At Mozilla, we believe that people learn best with others and that mentoring is a powerful, distributed way to connect learners with instructors.

By social learning, we mean that learning happens effectively through social interaction among peers. It’s learning that has an impact beyond an individual and becomes part of the larger society or community, in response to interactions and changes withing the community.

By mentoring, we mean peer support and encouragement where someone helps another person learn or make something, and also to understand that effort in a larger context. Mentoring is social and open-ended, and it’s certainly not just a one-way transfer of knowledge. We think a focus on mentoring is important, as it provides ongoing relationships for learners and a way to foster not only “hard” web skills like learning code but also the social ones like collaboration or working in the open.

WHY MOZILLA

Mozilla is a community that practices learning by making. We’ve got an ethos of less yak, more hack, and of helping people hack on things they care about. We don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” and instead encourage a playful approach to the web and the world. Peers are a critical part of the effort, and not only for Webmaker but across Mozilla in projects like Firefox and FirefoxOS. Merit and peer recognition mean more than titles.

We’re not doing this alone — it’s a huge, distributed collaboration across many organizations and individuals. A “big tent”, as we like to call it. From kitchen tables and small code clubs to edgy museums and international bodies, we see this as a group effort where many players have a role.

With experience in “big tent” models like the Hive Learning Networks (city labs where organizations cluster to share and create learning offerings, innovations and resources) and the Summer Code Party (a campaign to teach webmaking anywhere), we’re excited to take this ethos to the next level.

WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO

The mentoring team at Mozilla will megazord two existing teams and add some amazing new folks:

  • Hive NYC: Chris Lawrence, Lainie DeCoursy, Leah Gilliam
  • Curriculum Hacker: Laura Hilliger
  • Events/Mozfest: Michelle Thorne
  • Hive Toronto: Kathryn Meisner
  • Reps Liaison: Sayak Sarkar

This group will operate like a skunkworks incubator for radical ideas about learning, webmaking and mentoring.

We’ll run webmaking campaigns, train the trainer workshops, and other activities that grow the mentor community. This includes launching an international campaign rallying around the theme “Making as learning”.

We’ll bring new Hive Learning Networks online. The goal is to mobilize local communities and network them globally.

These efforts will be powered by platforms and social protocols for people to gather and teach skills for a digital age. We aspire to build a Github for Learning Stuff, an open repository where mentors can rip, remix and repost materials.

We’re dedicated to documentation and on-boarding new mentors, so many processes will be easily replicable, remixable and teachable. We want to celebrate the community at Mozfest and set the stage for 2014.

These milestones come from conversations with community members (thank you!), and we tried to roll that input into an action plan and share it back with you.

ROADMAP IN DETAIL

Here are our 2013 goals:

  • Grow a global community of mentors with a maker attitude
  • Offer compelling on-ramps for mentors to participate in webmaking
  • Merge Hive + Code Party to create a global mentor community w/ local roots
  • Make it easier to find local mentors, events, and learning resources online
  • Create more + better mentor resources: step by step guides for teaching that are hackable
  • Surface localization opportunities. Tools and starter content should all eventually be translatable for different communities.

StoryCamp Blast-Off Recap One

Last week, about 20 Hive members got together at Reel Works for a two-hour workshop to launch Hive NYC StoryCamp. I’m in town from Germany to attend a conference later this week in Philadelphia, and was excited to come to Brooklyn to help launch StoryCamp and get Hive NYC comfortable using the Popcorn Maker interface. >>http://hivenyc.org/storycamp/howtouse

At the beginning of the session, we quickly introduced ourselves and used the prompt “If you really knew me, you’d know…” to hear something unique about each person. We learned that Hive NYC had stealth filmmakers, dog lovers and bookworms in the room all coming together to explore Digital Storytelling with Popcorn. We started off by diving in to the beauty that is interactive web-based media. We used the awesome Popcorn JS project Know Your Exit to talk about how dynamic data and real-time updates can create unique viewing experiences. We also heard a great (and jargon-free) explanation of how Popcorn JS is a JavaScript library and how it’s unique features impact storytellers. Next, we clicked over to popcorn.webmaker.org to explore Mozilla’s Popcorn Maker interface and play with the software. We also discussed the importance of the story in Digital Storytelling and learned about the Story. Vision. Tech. (SVT) model. This is a concept that we and the Popcorn team use to highlight the implications of using interactivity and dynamic media to enrich how stories are told and interpreted.

Finally, we took the last hour to hack and play, applying our earlier discussions to a design challenge to create a new story based on a world wonder or cultural site. From the Pyramids and Leaning Tower of Pisa to the Statue of Liberty and beyond, Hive NYC members explored Digital Storytelling through Popcorn Maker.
