Fall 2013 Programs

Museums, libraries, media organizations, computer clubs and informal learning spaces offer a wide range of afterschool opportunities for middle and high school-aged youth across NYC. The opportunities listed below enable young people to explore their interests (science, game design, photography, storytelling, digital music), meet new friends and mentors, and gain important 21st century skills, all while having fun in the process.

Organization: Global Action Project (GAP)
Programs: SupaFriends, Youth Breaking Borders, Media History Timeline
Program/event dates: November 2013 – June 2014
Program/event times: afterschool for 3 hours, once a week
Description: GAP is recruiting for their free afterschool video production and activism programs for youth ages 14-21 who want to add their voice to the media, explore social issues that matter to them and advocate for their communities.

SupaFriends; A program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer young people. This program was started by GAP youth in 2006 to provide a safe space for young people who identify as LQBTQ to discuss issues that effect them as well as their community.
Youth Breaking Borders; A program for immigrant youth to talk through their experiences as immigrants in the US. In this program folks will discuss challenges they, strength in identity and how to use media as an effective tool for immigrant justice.
Media History Timeline; is a program for young people that are interested in exploring media ownership, media’s historical impact on communities and identities, as well as the role media plays in movement building in order to support the next step towards constructing a fully-youth designed interactive online tool.

YI Writers In the Writers program, teens work closely with contemporary artists to explore art and the connections between art and text through art-making and critical and creative writing.
YI Artists The Artists program brings teens together with contemporary artists, providing opportunities to work collaboratively, discuss art critically, think creatively, and make artwork inspired by this exchange.

Program: Taking on the Take-Down Notice: Copyright, Youth and Educators in Harmony
Program/event date: Tuesday, October 29
Program/event time: 4-8pm
Description: The LAMP’s launch of the Media Breaker, a free online video editor for remixing third-party content, opens doors for creative uses of video remix and media to engage students and modernize education. It also calls attention to the lack of awareness among educators and students about their rights under the fair use, which allows the reuse and modification of copyrighted materials. But how far do fair use protections go? What do media-savvy students and teachers need to know? What is the role of fair use in a 21st-century classroom? These questions and more will be explored at “Taking on the Take-Down Notice: Copyright, Youth and Educators in Harmony.” Featuring a panel of New York students in high school, college and graduate school, plus a panel of leading experts in the fields of intellectual property law, education and digital rights, this event will tackle some of the largest questions around how media can–and must–be part of the future of education.Click here for more info and to sign up.

Program: Teen Design Fair

Description: At the 2013 Teen Design Fair, high school students are invited to engage in career and college readiness through one minute mentoring sessions with design professionals at top of their field, including this year’s National Design Award winners!
Students will have the opportunity to talk with professionals working in various design disciplines such as fashion, product design, architecture, graphic design, and more. Meet this year’s winners here.
Among the event highlights, students will hear from television’s most famous design mentor Tim Gunn. Students will also take part in the Design Career Challenge, a series of skill-building activities assisting the teens glean career-building knowledge from the guest designers. Students may earn a digital credential badge for documenting their experience.

Organization: West Side YMCA ymcawestside
Program Dates: October 8- Mid April 2014
Program Times: Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30pm
Description: Teen Tech Crew provides high school teens aged 15 – 17 the opportunity to learn about and develop skills in the various professions of technical theater production at the West Side YMCA. The program is hands-on and free.

During weekly workshops teens receive guided technical training from tech theater professionals and develop skills in areas like lighting, set-design and construction, props, costumes, and sound design. Teen Tech Crew participants get to apply the skills learned in these workshops in a real-world environment by apprenticing under their instructors on our Kids Company productions in our renovated 145-seat Off-Broadway theater, the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater, to get valuable experience painting a set, operating the sound board, or taking on stage crew responsibilities during performances. The goal of the program is to develop a competent Teen Tech Crew cohort with enough technical theater experience to take leadership roles and be mentored to design, build, and operate the technical theater components of our youth theater programs as well as going on to succeed in other related internship and employment opportunities.

Organization:  American Museum for Natural History  minecraft
Program: Minecraft at the Museum
Program/event dates: October 15, 2013 – January 23, 2014
Program/event times: 4:30 – 6:30
Description: Minecraft, the indie-success video game that has sold more than  20,000,000 copies in under two years, is now heading to the American Museum of Natural History. Its players learn how to “mine” natural resources in their unique, resource-rich world and then “craft” the  objects required to explore its many natural biomes.
Designed with custom mods to teach science, early sessions will teach topics like geology and poison, in the Hall of Planet Earth, the new special exhibit, “The Power of Poison,” AND in Minecraft. Over the course of the program, as teens learn both science knowledge and Minecraft skills, they will gradually share management of the server and its content, collaborating to produce their own science-based Minecraft experiences.

Description: DreamYard Arts Center offers FREE Art Programs for Bronx youth.
At the Art Center, 5-21 year olds access the arts & technology, leadership development opportunities, and academic and social supports such as college preparation, social work services, and artist mentorship. Programs run after school and on weekends from October to May, with summer intensives in July.

Description: Have you ever thought to yourself: “Hey, where can I find scientists  to play card games with me?” Or how about: “Where can I go to design  science-based card games?” If so, then #scienceFTW is the place for you! In  #scienceFTW (that is, Science For The Win!) you will play (and take  home copies of) card games about such topics as paleontology, scatalogy,  parasitology, astronomy, and biodiversity. Playing with both Museum experts and game designers, you will learn about the science topics AND how to design educational games. Working with your peers and professionals, you will collaborate on the development of a prototype for a new Trading Card Game (think Pokemon or Magic: The Gathering) for the American Museum of Natural History that you will able to play with friends and family.

Description: This is a paid, after-school, pre-professional public art apprenticeship program for teens (14 to 19-year-olds) interested in using visual arts for the benefit of local communities. TEMA apprentices create public works of art collaboratively with Groundswell professional artists on projects commissioned by community partners. Through TEMA participants will have a chance to:

  • Meet people with similar interests
  • Learn art skills from professional artists
  • Help visually transform communities
  • Earn a stipend

TEMA meets once a week – 3 hours (plus 3 Saturdays or Sundays). Apprentices receive $200.00 for full participation in the program. DescriptionThe Lab is an intensive, six-month, afterschool workshop offered FREE to New York City youth (ages 14 – 20). Each fall and spring, we select 14 diverse and talented teens – and 14 professional filmmakers – from across New York City for the six-month workshop. The Lab challenges each student to write and develop a personal documentary story on a subject of his or her choice. Students learn writing, storytelling, basic camera, lighting, sound and Final Cut Pro editing as they put their ideas into action to create original short films. The course culminates in a gala screening to friends, family and the community.
