Leonid Bass is our one of our most advanced string instruments. Complete with all the previous Intimate Strings features, we took another step forward with our scripting and technology, going deeper “under the hood” to make sure that this instrument is even more efficient and useful.
We recorded transitions two-and from each note for three Legato styles. When you play connected lines, you hear real transition performances – without crossfading into sustain samples.
Perform longer or shorter Staccato notes in realtime based on key velocity or MIDI control. This works extremely well for creating Spiccato, tackling agile passages, or for playing longer accented notes.
Leonid Finkelshteyn, a native of Leningrad, began his career as Principal Bassist of the Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic at 19 while earning his M.M. from the Leningrad Conservatory. A Soviet Union Bass Competition prizewinner, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1990 and has since become a highly respected performer and teacher. He has been Principal Bassist of the North Carolina Symphony since 1996 and the Eastern Music Festival Orchestra since 1999, while also teaching at UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University, and the Eastern Music Festival.
As a soloist, he has premiered works like J. Mark Scearce’s *Antaeus* and Terry Mizesko’s Double Bass Concerto, both written for him. His career highlights include performances with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as collaborations with renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. An avid chamber musician, he has appeared at festivals and performed with artists like Julia Fischer and Awadagin Pratt.
