Well, we didn't have to spend about $500 on a new garage door opener/motor. Instead we found out that the belt band was what was wrong with it and through some googling (man, how did we even do things before the internets?) saw that it was a very common, universal band. Same thing used for lawn mowers, really, and it was just $13. On the other hand I'm a little disappointed in a repair guy that I called based on reviews from a review/social site. I called him on Saturday morning and still haven't heard back yet. He'll probably call on Monday. Several of the reviews stated that he called and even did work on real short notice. Besides that I was fully preparing myself to shell out the money for a new one. This one's well over 20 years old after all. A lot of repair people's attitudes towards things this old, machine-wise at least, is replace and not repair.
Took the boy in to the doctor today to get his rash checked out. It's a normal baby thing. That and he has cradle cap. Poor thing is blothcy and scaly. My little monster! ;o) He's officially 7 weeks old today. And he weighs 11 lbs, 12oz. now! Wow! We had been guessing that he was at about 10 lbs. because he outgrew his newborn sized diapers. My little boy isn't so little anymore. *sniffle* I mean it's good that he's growing so well but it's all going so fast.
Yesterday I went to City Hall to pick up his birth certificate and then had lunch with Doug downtown. I left the boy with Doug for about 30 minutes to try and take a look around the Container Store. The canvas garment rack cover was out of stock but they did have a nice canvas 6 shelf sweater holder that I was going to use for scarves, gloves and handbags instead. The closet is shaping up very nicely. Slowly but nicely. The next step is to actually try on all the clothes and figure out what works and doesn't work anymore.
While downtown I stopped by Old Navy and found a cute pair of flip flops with cherries printed on the straps. I'm sort of looking around for high wedge espadrilles now.
Watching HGTV is pretty addictve. All the shows about reorganizing, redecorating and what to do with small rooms are positively addictive. I make mental notes on what to do with or rooms based on the shows.
In other news, we may have hit upon a heating solution fo the living room. Base board heaters. It just might work. I'll have to do some research on them but I remember that my sister and I (when we were 10 till 13) had a room with one and it was pretty effective.
It is bitingly cold right now. Brrr. It reminds me very much of being in Europe in the winter. Which makes me want to travel. *sigh* The flat is too big to heat very efficently. That and it's an energy hog. A big gap under the front door, a plethora of single pane, double-hung (with gaps there too) windows and a weirdly small useless fireplace equals a drafty, cold place. It's pretty warm in the sunroom and bedrooms on the sunny days as they face south. But the front rooms are always very cool. The flat has 2 wall gas heaters. One in front and one in the rear. The problem with these type of heaters is that the heat rises and stays in the hallway because the walls above the doors block the heat from spreading evenly. So the rooms that need heat don't get heated like they should. Not sure what the solution to this would be. For the time being, as gas is so much more expensive than electric, we've got a couple of heaters that we move around from room to room.
Went to a friend's red egg and ginger party today. Dude. It's weird to see people that you grew up with (that you still sort of essentially see as that age and not the grownup folks they are now) with their kids and babies. I'm sure that they got the same feeling seeing me with Doug and the boy.
Another thing to mark off the list from days ago, went through the shirts and tossed about 3 that I won't be wearing. There are a few that I am wavering on. I just need to try them on. Tossed a few pairs of pants and hung up the rest so that I can see what I have. It's all progressing along nicely.
Well, we did have a very busy day today. The boy, Doug and I did go to the farmer's market, and then downtown. Found a gift for friend's second son, another warm fleece jacket and pant set for the boy. Both were on sale. $11 for the gift and $8 for the fleece outfit. At Old Navy picked up 2 pairs of knit pants and a beanie for the boy. At another store there was a very cute reversible cardigan and pant set in baby blue/white but I would rather wait till it went on sale. At Nordstroms I bought a tube of Mustela's Vitamin Barrier Cream for the boy. It's the diaper rash preventative that all the celebrity moms use. *rolls eyes* I thought I would try it seeing as I've got this huge store credit there now.
After that we headed over to Cost Plus in the Fisherman's Wharf area. They have a nice dining table there that seats 8 when the 2 leaves are put in. The price is not bad, $559. The chairs were nicely designed too. They have a golden tan canvas curtain panel that might look really nice in the living and dinig rooms. The paint in those rooms are also a golden tan. I would've bought one to see how it would look but it didn't look like they had any in stock.
Busy day. In between all that I managed to nurse the little guy ok. No long feedings. Just quick and enough to keep him quiet. Luckily being in the car and the stroller makes him sleepy.
I was watching a little of the Olympics when I caught a promo for Conviction a new show about young Asst. DA's. Eric Balfour (Jesse from BtVS, S1) and J. August Richards (Gunn) are both on the show. I wonder if it's like Grey's Anatomy but set in the world of law?
So let's see, from the list of the other day I got my brother to come over and unclog the bathroom sink (e-yew!) and I ofund the caulking gun at my mom's house. That's 2 things!
In other news I got my federal tax refund! Woo and hoo! Now I just need to do my state taxes.
Just paid the roofer. There are no leaks. Yay! There is a little puddle outside one window though. He explained that they tried to grade it the best they could to drain but it's because of how the house was built. That part of the house settled so that it actually tilts away from the corner drain. What they did was a vast improvement though. The puddle was much larger before and it would take many days for it to dry up. It's already mostly dried up now. He said to call him with any problems or questions. Nice guy. And the pricng was good too.
The boy is doing well. He's gaining quite a bit of weight. He looks so different from his first day. He's filled out a bit and is starting to look less like a little old man and more baby-ish. He makes so much noise when he's asleep. It's no wonder he wakes himself up all the time. I can see where swaddling does come in handy. I swaddle him during the night to keep his arms from swinging around and waking him earler than he would normally. Doug likes to call him burrito baby when I do that. He's also growing ot of a few things already. Some things are getting to be too short for him. His little undershirts used to almost cover his belly button and now they barely reach it. I can't believe how quickly he's changing.
The roof is nearly fixed. Yesterday the roofer finished roughly 80% of the job. He would've finished it today but it rained so will be back tomorrow. And so far it looks like the leak that was happening at the bathroom window is gone because of the new roof. Yay!
We've installed the new/temporary curtains in our bedroom using the double rod holders and rods from IKEA. The curtains are a navy blue velvet with a white cotton sheer. The velvet curtains are super long and touch the floor. I'm going to have to hem them a bit, just about 2 inches, I think. The really long length doesn't bother me but since the floor is carpet, it drags to much. the curtains look good with the green walls. We're going to put up the same in the baby's room. The curtains really make a huge difference. Eventually we want to replace the bedroom windows with more energy efficient ones than the cheap single pane aluminum ones that are there now.
The boy is doing great. He weighs at least 8lbs. now. I've taken him out on short jaunts in the front carrier or stroller. The feeding schedule is kind of tough though. It's pretty much on demand which at night he's been averaging every 2 hours. Daytime is bit harder currently, he does what they call cluster feedings, closely grouped feedings, sometimes it's every hour after 3 or 4 pm until about 10 pm. Very demanding. I can't wait till it's not this often.
They hit those deep, deep emotional "kinks" and become friends or frenemies like real people, so naturally you want to spend time with them in all the new places you wander in life….
