A Circus Song

Hi everyone,

I wrote this one in 2012. Feels like time to drag it out again.

The Duel
David (Eugene Field) Harrison

Republicans and democrats
Across the aisle in the chamber sat:
T’was half past session, their faces were red,
Nor one nor t’other had done what they said.
Six-pack Joe snapped open a can
Wondering why any of these idiots ran;
I wasn’t there; I simply relate
What I read about this sorry state.

Republicans roared, “You’re destroying our nation!”
Democrats clambered their tintinnabulation,
The air was littered, an hour or so,
With pomposity and bits of Poe,
While the justices in their supreme places
Held up their hands before their faces,
And congress preened in self-admiration.

(Now mind: I’m only telling you
What Joe Six-pack declares is true!)
Citizens everywhere looked blue
And wailed, “Oh, dear! What shall we do?”
But our leaders fought like a dog and a cat,
Wallowed this way and tumbled that,
Employing every tooth and claw
In the awfulest way you ever saw –
And oh! How the hot air gassed and blew!
(Don’t fancy I exaggerate – I got my news from the state of State!)

Post election, where the leaders had swaggered
They found no trace of posturing braggart,
And some folks think unto this day
That citizens voted the scoundrels away!
But the truth is this – and I raise a cup,
The Do-Nothings ate each other up!
Now what do you really think of that!
(Joe Six-pack told me so,
And that is how I came to know.)

Children’s Literature Festival of the Ozarks

Hi everyone,

I look forward to tomorrow when I’ll join a number of other authors, including old friends ROLAND SMITH, KATE KLISE, and ANTONY JOHN, to visit with groups of students attending the 40th annual Children’s Literature Festival of the Ozarks. It’s a great favorite of mine. Sponsored by the English Department of Missouri State University, the event will take place on camps in the Plaster Student Union.

Tonight I’ll attend the dinner for those involved in putting on the festival, volunteering for it, and participating as an author. It’s always a good event. For further information, this is from the English Department blog:

The Missouri State University English Department is pleased to host The 40th Annual Children’s Literature Festival of the Ozarks on Thursday, October 13, 2022. The festival provides opportunities for area students in grades 4 – 8 to become inspired to read and write through presentations and opportunities to meet authors.

For additional information about the conference, including which authors will be featured, view the festival’s website: https://rcrowder1.wixsite.com/childrenslitfest/home .

The word for October is…

Hi everyone,

Here we are on the first step of the last quarter of 2025. Time for a new word for Word of the Month Poetry Challenge. Our participation has been sagging lately, a puzzlement, so I hope this month’s word will reignite some creative fires. Here we go. The magical word — and all words are magical — is STEP. For the records, this marks the 193rd consecutive month that I’ve posted a new word to exercise your imagination.

A note of support for ORCA

Hi everyone,

Our son JEFF HARRISON serves on a nonprofit organization called Oregon Coastal Alliance (ORCA), which exists “To protect the Oregon coast by working with coastal residents for sustainable communities; protection and restoration of coastal and marine natural resources; providing education and advocacy on land use development; and adaptation to climate change.”

Jeff was telling us the other night about a fundraiser just under way to support the good work of ORCA. They’re selling 100 tickets for $100 each. As readers know, I rarely promote the work of others unless it’s literacy-based, but I think this effort qualifies because an important tenet of ORCA is to help people learn about the protection and preservation of the 363 mile-long coast of Oregon. The winner receives prizes worth $1,300. Here’s what is included.

Two nights at an upscale, cozy inn near the beach
Salmon fishing trip for two
Birdwatching trip for six
Gift certificates for two local restaurants.
