I – Indian Smoke Signals

Before I forget—because the world is strange and memories fade faster than they should—let me tell you about the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.

Tall Cool ☺ne saw it too, so at least I know it wasn’t just one of those overly vivid moments my imagination sometimes produces.

It was the morning of March 2. I remember because I had a mammogram appointment that day, which meant we didn’t have to start our walk quite so early. The light was already settling across the fields when we set out.

You know that pasture on Union Church Road—the one with the long driveway that curves up around the field? There’s a pond on the far side, and across the road sits that big brick house. Usually there are half a dozen black cows grazing out there like quiet witnesses to the morning.

In that pasture stand two trees.

And from one of them, I swear on my Bible, white smoke started pouring out.

Not a little mist. Real smoke. The kind you see when someone starts a fire and tosses leaves on top—thick, billowing, waiting for the flame to break through.

I stopped mid-step.“What in the world was that?” I asked. “Did you see that?”

Tall Cool ☺ne looked back at the tree. “Yeah… I saw it,” he said. “But I don’t know what it was.”

We both waited for flames.

None came.

The smoke simply vanished.

We kept walking, both of us a little rattled but trying to act like sensible people who hadn’t just watched a tree start smoking for no reason at all.

Then it happened again.

Another puff. Rising straight up from the same tree like something ancient trying to send a message skyward.

For a moment it looked almost deliberate… like Indian smoke signals.

And then, just like before—

the smoke disappeared.

No fire. No sound. No explanation.

Just two people standing in the quiet of a morning field, wondering if sometimes the world still whispers small surprises in ways we’ve forgotten how to understand.

Has anything like that ever happened to you? Something weird and unexplainable but awesomeness that you’ve never seen before? Share with me, I’d love to read about it!

Cheers,

Faithfully Fight Forever

Monday mornings come way to fast.  There are a lot of F-words I could expound on for today’s A2Z Challenge.  I’ve had a few people at work drop the f-bomb on me.  There was a time back in the day when I used to drop the F-bomb quite frequently and it didn’t bother me so much as it does now.  Now it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  Isn’t that funny?

I battled back and forth through the night with what to base today’s challenge on. Fighting doesn’t seem like an empathetic word. Faithful is definitely a word that might involve empathy.   Something happened over the weekend that made me realize that for me, being empathetic isn’t condoning something that is wrong.  Someone pointed out to me that I wasn’t being very empathetic over a situation that happened.

Ever since Eve succumbed to the serpent’s lies in the Garden, the battle of wills began.  Gaining control over another.  We all want it.  We all want to be right, even when we’re wrong.  Even when we break the law.

Maybe I’m wrong on this one, and I think I mentioned when I started this theme that I struggled with being empathetic at times, and was hoping to gain insight.  I have to admit that I can’t empathize with stupidity.  “Oh I know it’s against the law, but that doesn’t apply to me, so I’m gonna do it anyways.” (This is just an example, it is not the situation that happened, but someone did break the law).  A person robs a bank, gets shot by the police and now is laying in a hospital bed fighting to survive a gunshot wound.  I feel sorry for that person, but I have no empathy for them. Maybe some people have that.  I don’t. That person is an idiot who chose to break the law, hence they need to deal with the consequences.

I asked for spiritual discernment, even prayed for it and God is faithful. He will answer our prayers.  Sometimes it’s tough to see what I see in people and I wish I didn’t. But I can’t give it back. It’s like seeing a dead animal or an accident on the side of the road. You can’t not look after you look.  I’ve learned now if I see an animal in the road ahead in the distance, I look away or close my eyes until we are past it. I know that sounds incredibly silly but my heart hurts to see a dead domestic animal in the road.  Why would someone hit an animal and then leave it to die?  Why can’t pet owners take better care of their pets?  Not that wild animals have any less value than a domestic animal…they all have same, but my heart just can’t take the trauma of seeing it anymore. I wish sometimes I could look away from what I see in people.

We get to choose the battles we want to fight and the ones that aren’t worth putting in the effort. People who think rules don’t apply to them won’t sit high on my empathy list.  They need the chip knocked off their shoulder.  Everyone is different and everyone has a different story to tell.  That’s what makes us all so important in God’s eyes.  He gave each one of us a story to tell and made us all special in different ways.  We get to faithfully fight forever in the battles we chose to engage in.

Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings of another person while sympathy is feeling sorry for someone and their situation without sharing their feelings.

What situations do you struggle with when you should be empathetic but you are sympathetic instead?  I’d love to read your examples so that I know I’m not alone.

Cheers,

Defer to Differ

I think I mentioned I chose the theme empathy because it’s something companies are stressing their employees use more of when dealing with customers.  In my job, we get correctives for not using enough empathy.  Personally I think that’s ridiculous but we all have a hierarchy we have to adhere to.  We don’t have to agree but we do have rules we have to follow.  I figure in this journey of A-Z through empathy I’ll learn something and maybe even share some insight with others.

Yesterday during our walk I told Tall Cool ☺ne I didn’t know what I was going to do for the letter D.  I was tossing around Devil’s Advocate in my mind but couldn’t come up with how that would have empathy.  Empathy and devil is just an oxymoron.  Tall Cool ☺ne always has a good story to tell about the people he works with.  A bunch of hillbilly rednecks if you ask me but they are entertaining.

He told me about an email that was sent out using the word differ instead of defer. Of course the two words have completely different meanings and the way it was used in the email made no sense at all … another word was used incorrectly in the same line so it was just nonsense. (Spell checking is not proof-reading, people!) We joked about it and had a good laugh that made the grueling 4 mile hike at 4:30 AM at least entertaining.

Hence came the title of today’s post.  When we come in contact with people, first impressions mean a lot.  It’s hard to have confidence in someone who has a bad first impression just like it is easy to be misled by someone with a good first impression.  Shouldn’t we all have a motto to “defer to differ”?  Yield to the distinctiveness of someone we come in contact with.  We don’t know their story.  We don’t walk in their shoes.  God’s word says He will not give us more than we can handle: “No temptation has overtaken you except such is common to man; but God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation, will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” {1 Corinthians 10:13}  What God prepares one person for isn’t the same as another. I am fearfully and wonderfully made…we all are.  And we all carry different baggage that we should defer to differ.

Who do you need to give more grace to?  How’s everyone doing?

We’ve almost got week one down.  Don’t give up!  You can do it!

Cheers,

Oy Vey: Spirit Feeding † Flesh Starving

My French teacher used to use this term a lot back in high school. She was forever saying, “Oy Vey” or “Mon Dieu”! I never really thought too much about it until later in life I found myself mimicking her “oy vey” or “oi, yoi yoi”. Interestingly enough, it means woe is me.

It’s first found in Psalm 120:5 ~Woe is me, that I dwell in Meshech, the intensity of the psalmist’s distress — woe is me. If you continue to read you will see that the writer is for peace, but he lived amongst pagan people.

I found myself uttering “Oy Vey” when I realized I had nothing for O. I even made up a recipe for the kitchen today. Then in the midst of thinking I had nothing I realized I had everything. “…woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!” 1 Corinthians 9:16.

For those who have God on their side, He always comes through. I love my God. He is amazing and I will preach until the day is long. I have nothing without Him but with Him, everything is possible.

Be encouraged!

Axe to Grind: Spirit Feeding † Flesh Starving

At the beginning Z seems like it’s so far away and I wonder if I will be able to accomplish the task and complete the challenge. ♫♫ The ants go marching one by one, hoo-rah, hoo-rah! ♫♫

I have this terrible habit. I’ve been trying to get it under control for a while now but I’ve not been successful. Since this challenge is a discipline I’ve decided to take on a new approach to making a change. One small step at a time, right?

For years I’ve had this ideal weight in mind of what would be my perfect weight. I’ve not been at that perfect weight since before children and my oldest is almost 36. I lowered my standards of what the perfect weight would be to make it more realistic. Even though it’s only 18 pounds away, it seems like a hundred when they won’t shed!

I started paying attention to my habits. What goes in must come out. The best way to get a hold of an issue is to make friends with it. I thank God for the opportunity to open my mind to the possibility of the benefits that can come from the difficulty.

As much as I hate to admit it, I am a stress eater. Every morning right before I sign into work, I find myself getting a granola bar, a bagel, a piece of toast, it doesn’t matter, something, anything. And the sad part about it, I’ve already had breakfast!  I don’t need to eat  I’m not hungry! It’s completely STRESS EATING!

Since I started working on these blog posts I’ve been changing my habits. Instead of something to eat, I grab a water, make a cup of tea and say a quick prayer. I even gave that thorn in my side a name … “Axe to grind”.  And let me tell you it really is a thorn in my side.  I have a wicked case of duodenitis and if I don’t take care of my gut health it’s painful.

It’s not easy. Bad habits are hard to replace with good habits. But once they are recognized and we acknowledge they are an issue, then we can ask for help and make changes. Make friends with the problem in your life, then ask God to show you how He wants you to use it so that you can benefit from it. Water in, stress eating out.

What kind of thorn do you have in your side? Let me know in the comments how I can pray for you.

Cheers,

Reflections on Feeding the Flock 23

Another A-Z challenge completed. This is something I’ve been doing since 2015. I actually dabbled in it in 2014 but was not very successful.  It disciplines me to actually take the time to write. I always have full intentions of continuing to write throughout the year, but life seems to get in the way.  We all have priorities and each one takes a different precedence over someone else’s concerns. What is important to me is probably not important to you. My cousin Eric writes a newsletter every month about rocks.  For the life of me I don’t know what is so special about rocks? find out by clicking here but he loves it. I applaud him for all the work he puts into that newsletter every month, even though I don’t understand most of what I read.

I enjoy this challenge very much. Every year I get to reconnect with the fellow blogger’s I’ve met over the years.  Every once in awhile I’ll make a few new friends.  It’s like a family reunion online.

This year I stretched myself too far. My theme this year had to do with The Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all the nations…” FEEDING THE FLOCK 23 was my theme. Check out W-WAKE UP.  That’s where my theme idea originated.

I took on more than I should have by opting in to do both blogs. I learned a lot throughout this challenge.  I didn’t think I was going to be able to finish. I lost my stepdad on Earth Day and I still had seven days (14 posts) to go.  How was I going to function and go to work and post a blog each day? Do you know what God said to me?”…O you of little faith.” If GOD leads you to it, He will see you through it. (praise Lord!)

I was successful at posting to both blogs for every letter. I did slack at visiting others and I apologize for that.  I do want to say thank you to those who visited me. Kristin was consistent at leaving a comment on every recipe I posted. ☺ Little comments mean a great deal in bloggy world.

At this time, I don’t have any suggestions about improving the challenge.  I liked the graphics and KUDOS to whoever took the time to do them this year.  If anyone who is reading this post is interested in volunteering to get your talent out there…click here

Here are the links for each of the posts this year… the food was supposed to go with the devotion but somehow I meandered and got lost along the way.  It happens.  Hope to see you all next year. And you never know, I might come up with a post here and there.  Stay tuned.

Zombie Apocalypse Bread – Feeding the Flock 23

The full title of today’s post is Zombie Apocalypse Bread, Zelda and other silly things that have vied for my attention. Does anyone remember the Legend of Zelda? I was obsessed with making it to the next level. Before Zelda it was Mario Brothers and then after Zelda it was Yoshi’s Island and SimCity. More recently there was Farm Town and Candy Crush.  Ugh silly games and other things that take up too much time.

The zombie apocalypse bread happened Friday. If you have been following since the beginning over in Crackerberries Kitchen you know that I’ve been experimenting with ssourdough starter. I fully intended to make homemade garlic bread to go with the big pasta sauce for dinner on Friday night. It was a complete disaster and it took up way too much of my time. More time cleaning than it did to fix the mess. I was able to salvage some of the dough and it actually came out pretty good in the end. It should have “yielded” two loaves instead of one, but that’s okay. Live and learn.

Sometimes we get involved in things that are not productive.  Maybe it’s too much screen time. Maybe it’s too many days on the golf course. Maybe it’s binge watching Netflix and living he life of a couch potato. Maybe it’s getting involved in other people’s business. Maybe it’s gossiping about other people. Anything that takes away from our time that is unproductive.

Whatever it is, today is a brand new day. Let’s get our affairs in order.  Let’s get ready! The Zombie Apocalypse is coming, (even though it’s not really called that). He’s coming on a white horse. A glorious horse!

…and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and Ture, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. ~Revelation 19:11

Marana tha ~1 Corinthians 16:22

Be blessed,

Thank you everyone who played along, followed, commented, and enjoyed the posts.  One more to go for reflections.  I always say I’m going to write more.  It’s probably safer to say “See ya next year,” God willing.

Yankees are Allowed – Feeding the Flock 23

When the thought for this post first came to me, it was in the middle of the night, and as usual I was too lazy write it down. I can’t remember exactly where I was going with this, but I think it had to do with the multitude of different nations that are going to be in heaven.

I work for a company that allows me to work at home. A lot of companies do that now after the Covid thing. I have been working at home since 2015. I love not having to commute, not having to worry about fixing my hair or buying a dress-up wardrobe. I am allowed to wear whatever I want as long as my voice is professional and courteous.

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone was allowed? Too many things are not allowed.  Not allowed to say this, not allowed to say that. Don’t talk politics, don’t talk ‘religion’. No pets allowed, no bare-feet allowed, no cut-off’s, no wonder we have a hard time keeping up with all the rules.

I am on the phone all day long and sometimes people ask me where they are calling. Where I’m from is not where I live and too many times they act surprised that I don’t have the accent that goes along with where they are calling. Lawd, knows I try to get that southern drawl in but I just don’t have it. Sometimes they will ask if I’m a blue state or a red state. They almost never find the humor when I tell them that my favorite color is red but sometimes when I’m feeling down I’m a little blue, so it’s probably safe to say I’m in a constant state of confusion.

I find that people tend to hold stereo-types of others based on where they are from and what they believe. (Terry, Tall Cool 😎ne  knows you don’t care how he did it back home! You’ve always done it this way. 🤪 ) I suppose we all tend to have our own opinions on how things should be done and tend to think it should be done the way we have always done it.  God create each and every one of us special in our own ways (some of us more special than others — I did indeed ride the short bus).

If you haven’t seen Jesus Revolution definitely put it on your list. I love how Pastor Chuck took care of the carpets when one of his parishioners complained about the hippies with their dirty feet.

Serving all men … “I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” ~ 1 Corinthians 9:22

God doesn’t care what side of the tracks we grew up on. He doesn’t care where we came from. Jesus lves everyone. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanses us for all unrighteousness. ~ 1 John 1:9

What are you holding on to that you can confess and let go of today? Today is the day of salvation.

Be blessed,

X-Ray Vision – Feeding the Flock 23

Not only could he leap tall buildings in a single bound, Superman had X-ray vision. He could see through things like buildings. Sometimes I can see through people. I know when they are not being completely sincere. Sometimes people do things to toot their own horn but they masquerade it into helping others.  They take on things to fix an issue, but they do it for the wrong reasons. They think it’s the right thing but it’s not really because they want to do it, it’s because they think if they don’t then people will judge them and they will look bad. There’s a saying Tall Cool ☺ne uses from White Men Can’t Jump “You’d rather look good and lose than look bad and win”

Galatians 6:4 ~ Let each one eXamine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another

God says give with a cheerful heart. 2 Corinthians 9:7. We as people too often take on responsibilities because we want to be the superman. We want to take the credit for fixing bad situations. Sometimes we will do it out of guilt. We don’t even realize we are not helping the issue, we are enabling it. How many times have you seen people do something then get upset because they don’t get the response they were eXpecting? I’ve done it more times than I care to mention.

Colossians 3:23 ~And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.

I am sorry if I am stepping on toes. I’m just pointing out things I see. God gives each of us gifts. See 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 I think He gave me discerning of spirits. Sometimes I like that gift and other times not so much. ~ALL things work together for good to those who love God… Romans 8:28

A lot of scripture today. In the comics Superman has X-ray vision.  When I put on my special glasses I have X-ray vision.  You know who always has X-ray vision? GD!

Psalm 44:21 … He knows the secrets of the heart.

Have you ever had X-ray vision? Have you ever had an X-ray?

Raccoons – Feeding the Flock 23

These little critters might appear to be cute but they can destroy a bucket of pecans like nobody’s business. It took us awhile to find out what was making the mess of pecans all over the porch each morning. We thought it was the squirrels. We caught them red handed. They would come, like a thief in the night, open the container and have a feast of pecans, leaving the shells all over the porch. We figured out that we need to put a heavy rock on top of any containers we didn’t want them digging into. They are smart little critters. We never know when a thief is going to come.

God’s word says

~”But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night …” 2 Timothy 3:10
~”Behold, I am coming as a thief…” Revelation 16:15

Have you ever had critters come to your house? Did they make a mess of things? How did you take care of it?

Are you ready for the thief who will come in the night? We should be vigilant because of the unexpected timing of His return.

Be blessed.

Quiet Life – Feeding the Flock 23

“…that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your own hands …  “

~1 Thessalonians 4:11

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people minded their own business and didn’t try to run other people’s affairs?

Be blessed,

Old Pine Tree – Feeding the Flock 23

memories

Once upon a time when I was a little girl I remember sitting on a wooden board. The board was carved out with large irregular V’s on either side. Strategically the board was placed between a thick braided-rope that looped down into a U. This rope I remember, was somewhat prickly to the touch. It reached up for a long ways and was twisted around the trunk of a hundred year old pine tree. I spent countless days and evenings on that old rope swing. So much time that eventually the prickly rope became smooth in the two positions where I held on with my hands.

Mostly I remember spending the days on the swing alone. I would swing as high as my short pumping legs would let me go, stretching my sneaker feet out to the sky. One day I had the notion that if I stood on the board I could pump harder, and the swing could go higher. It sure did. Right over the top of the clothes line. That next week was the longest week of my life. I had to stay inside the house. Back in the 70’s a kid staying inside in the summertime was out of the question. But my legs had to be kept straight while my grandmother applied some sticky gooey dressing on the backs of my knees to prevent infection from the rope burn I acquired.

Those burns were the worst thing I thought I ever felt. But that was before the tire replaced the board. I scraped my whole back across the bark of the old pine tree. It wouldn’t have been so bad, but in childhood fashion, I was swinging powerfully high. When the tire twirled and came down and around, the motion threw me with ferocity into the tree. At my grandmother’s exhorting, the tire was removed and the board returned to the rope.

Some of my fondest memories took place underneath that old pine tree. My favorite times were when the other kids were there; my sister and my cousins. There were nine aunts and uncles so there were lots of kids. They would all gather on the picnic table under the pine tree and I would take my place on the swing. “Tell us a story,” they would insist. The stories I told I made up from watching Big Valley or Bonanza or Green Acres, and all of the kids would play a part in the story. The girls wore long, beautiful gowns and their hair was curled up pretty. The boys always rode horses and wore cowboy hats and leather boots. We all lived in grand mansions and had prominent jobs. On the weekends, we would get together with our children and enjoy each other’s company like the families of Ozzie and Harriet, The Brady Bunch and My Three Sons.

As time advanced, we grew up. I left the swing behind. Life in the real world was not anything like the made up family sitcoms I was used to telling stories about. I remember going back to my grandparent’s house after the old swing had been removed. “But why?” I whined to my grandfather. He just gave me a queer look. The rope had rotted and a storm had taken most of the big old pine tree. The kids were now all grown, so what was the point in replacing the swing? What was the point? What is the point? My nostalgic memories? Because I liked it? Because I didn’t want to accept change? Because I wanted everything to stay the same? None of my reasoning mattered to my grandfather. The swing was gone, and so was my youth.

The heirlooms are gone, and the house has been sold. My grandfather died and the brothers and sisters fought over his estate, like they hated each other. It was dragged out for more than ten years.  Relationships are not anything like they used to be when I was a little girl. Maybe the relationships were always a façade and I just never knew no one liked each other.  The stories I tell now are to people I don’t know. There are no long gowns or fancy mansions or cowboy hats and horseback riding.

The burn scars on the backs of my legs are proof that the swing was real. Reality is only something we can touch. I think the old pine tree is gone.  The family members I grew up have lives of their own. There are no more family get togethers or reunions.  My childhood has been relinquished to smoke and mirrors. The rope swing at my grandfather’s house is my childhood fairy tale. I will keep it in my memory for as long as the scars remain on the backs of my legs. Even with change, we still can try to hold on to the good memories.

You know there is one thing that doesn’t change.  That’s God.  He is the same today as He was yesterday and will be tomorrow. He loves me and He loves you too.  Have you met Him yet?  He’s knocking at your door.

~ Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. ~

Letter Writing – Feeding the Flock 23

letter

The old-fashioned hand-written letter is definitely a thing of the past. I found this in my grandmother’s old scrapbook. It is dated 1934, which makes this little piece of paper I was careful to scan about 90 years old. Based on the date, my grandmother would have been almost 20 when she wrote this letter to her sister-in-law. I am one of the few left who supports the USPS by writing the old fashion hand-written letter at least once a week.

I find this letter is bittersweet in more ways than one. My grandmother is gone, and has been gone for 36 years. I imagine things were a lot different when it came to relationships in 1934 than they are now. Letters were probably few and far between. There were no emails, no text messages, no personal messages, no phone calls, no Skype, no Face-time, no snap-chat or any of the other social media formats that are available to people today.

Unfortunately, relationships are not valued as much as they were in 1934. People in today’s world take advantage of technology and just assume that their friends and family will always be there at the push of a button. And we wonder why it is so difficult for people to have meaningful connections with each other. Respect is a thing of the past and people don’t value relationships like they used to. If there is a falling-out with one friend, they move on to the next person because with social media you can have 3,848 friends on Facebook, yet still not understand the value of one true friend.

With all of the communicating technology available today one would think that contact with family members or old friends would be a normal thing to do. Today do something out of the ordinary. Contact that relative or old friend you haven’t talked to in awhile. Don’t take that relationship for granted.  There is no time like the present.

~I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write you with pen and ink, but I hope to see you shortly and we shall speak face to face. Peace to you … 3 John 13-14

Friendship – Feeding the Flock 23

Much like a cupboard of full Mason jars
Or the midnight sky of twinkling stars
A friend may be compassionate and sweet
Whilst some encourage in times of defeat
Sharing a story to brighten a frown
Lending a shoulder to the friend who’s down
Great treasure is found when least expected
Friends will stand tall when one is rejected
Countless secrets, much laughter digested
Friendships depend on the time invested
Shower friendships with love and affection
Grow toward the light in the right direction
Relationships built on candor and trust
Will stand the test of time and never rust
Friendships will age, as does the garden crop
Work will be done, with many a teardrop
Like an old Mason jar filled with treasure
Finding true friendship is such a pleasure

~John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

Blessing Blitz – Feeding the Flock 23

Blessing Blitz

I had never heard of this before I recently experienced it at the women’s gathering at our church. Several names were drawn out of a big tub and presented with gift cards. The cards were sealed so the amounts were unknown. It was fun and exciting hearing the ladies names called one after another. I kept anticipating my name to be called next. My name never did get called but it was fun to see all of the ladies who did get called.

At the end of the ‘blitz’, Heidi, the pastor’s wife, read this scripture Acts 20:35 “… And remember the words of the Lord Jesus that He said, it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Then she asked, “What will you do with your gift card?”

What a conviction! Here I was sitting at the conference all bummed out because my name didn’t get called! We all want to be recognized, we all want to “WIN” something. Say it isn’t true and you would be lying. But isn’t what Jesus did for us enough? He gave everything so we could have life eternal. What can you do to bless others today? Simple things mean a lot. Sometimes it’s just a ☺ smile.

Be blessed.

Has it already been a year? I planned to have this challenge all buttoned up and ready to go by now. I haven’t even started writing them yet, however, the thoughts are jumbling around in my head. This will be my ninth year of participating in the A-Z blog. I love it because we get to catch up with old blog buddies and we get the opportunity to meet new blog buddies. I’ve not been blogging since last year, and my attempts at taking part in the road trip after last year’s challenge failed. But here I am back again to play along.

Back in 2010 I was part of a bible study with a group of women who were struggling with addictions. This was one of best experiences of my life. Only the resilient survive, and survival comes through JESUS. Only JESUS saves! My theme this year has to do with The Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all the nations…” FEEDING THE FLOCK. I’m going to share an experience here in tandem to the recipe on my kitchen page. It’s a HUGE undertaking but I’m up for the challenge, are you?

Do you have a recipe request? How has food made you resilient in your struggles?  Feel free to share your comments below.

Be blessed,

A2Z REFLECTIONS

As I reflect on the A2Z 2022 blogging challenge I’m brought back to my first reflection post that I did in 2015.Wow 1500 participants that year!  That reflection post lead to another reflection that changed our whole life.

Tall Cool ☺ne and I started down a journey that has never ended. The journey continues even though I don’t continue to blog it like I used to. Blogging has begun to turn into a lost art, similar to the old fashion letter writing. Visiting blogs is easy, taking the time to comment is the challenge. I don’t want to be generic. I want to take the time to actually read the post and comment on what I think. So many times I read a post that absolutely sucks and then I’m at the point of do I follow Thumper’s instructions “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say nuthin’ at all.”  Should I say exactly what I think? Or do I post a generic comment of “here from the A2Z challenge, good luck”. Blah, blah, blah. ↑ I absolutely despise generic comments and I really try to refrain from it.

Questions from the TEAM.
Give consideration to how the A to Z Challenge impacted your blog. I always get a lot of traffic during A2Z month. Typical. The more you put in, the more you get out.
View your stats to see how the last 30 days changed your blog view numbers. I dislike looking at stats. They are like metrics and measurement and it doesn’t take a scientist to figure out how it works. I can see that my April month always has the most traffic. Last year the blog had 1,254 views with 294 visitors and this year only 1,167 views and 255 visitors. I don’t get too puked out about stats.
Make an observation about how many comments you got on your April posts. As I mentioned, I’ve observed more comments for the month of April because I was commenting on others so you tend to get what you put in. You comment, you get comments back. You don’t comment, you don’t get comments back.
Contemplate what you learned from making posts during the Challenge. I enjoy it and brings me joy. Do what you love and it will all fall in place.
What gave you the idea for your Challenge Theme, if you used one?
Did any blogs you visited in the Challenge make a lasting impression on you? I found a few that I have added to visit throughout the year to see what they are up to.
Perhaps meditate on how to express your thoughts about the Challenge this year. I wish it was taken more seriously by all who signed up. There were so many links that I clicked on from the sign-up sheet where I just could not find their current posts, there was no way to comment or the page was gone. It takes time to visit other blogs and when I spent time to do this and came up with an HTTP405 error or some other glitch, it made me stop trying other new blogs and only visiting the ones I had success at.
Give an opinion on any of the three #AZchat events from this year.
What impact did the Challenge have on your social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)? None
Rumination about the A to Z Challenge can help the team improve! “The action of chewing the cud.” I’ve got cows in my front yard and I gotta tell ya, they do it all day long and they don’t change.
This year included a deliberation to find another graphic person after the loss of Jeremy. Muse about the imagination and talent of Anjela. Thank you Anjela and I plan to purchase a coffee cup. I would like a hoodie but prefer a different color other than black so may have to wait on that.
• What is your impression of the A to Z Team? Impressive.
After much cogitation, let your pensiveness reflect in your post. The A2Z challenge is like a family reunion for some of us. We come here each year to share and visit and catch up. After the month of April is over we go back to our lives and forget about our teammates until the following year. It’s bittersweet. It was sad to lose Jeremy and it was nice to have Anjela step up to the task of filling his shoes. We don’t know how much time we have left. We should try to make each post, each comment, each visit… count.
Did any dreams or goals you set come to fruition during this April Challenge? I absolutely completed the challenge. That was the goal.
Please tell everyone if you picked up any sweet merchandise this yearNot yet but as I mentioned, plan to get the coffee cup.
The A to Z team would LOVE to know your thoughts on NEXT YEAR!
What needs to change? Immediately delete the links that do not work. If people cannot follow instructions, they can’t play. (I know, sorry I’m a meanie). Also review my thoughts from the 2015 reflection post.
What should stay the same? I wish everything could stay the same, but change is inevitable and who knows what platform will be invented in 2023? Maybe we will have holographic blogging?
What theme do you think we’ll use? What are the options? Is this a trick question?

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO COMPLETED THE CHALLENGE!  I know I say I’ll be in touch through out the year…I say that every year.  I really am gonna try.

Cheers,

YIKES

Yikes! The yearly A2Z is just about complete. YOUNG bloggers YEARN for traffic to their blogs while seasoned YUPPIES YAWN that the YARDWORD is over. Time to thank the YOUTH for playing along and saying YES I need YOU to the challenge. Did everyone make it all the way through?

Maybe you visited a Yeti? What about YOGURT? Did you find a blog about YARN and learning to knit a hat? Did you see a YELLOW diamond? Maybe there is a recipe for cooking YAMS? Did you find YULETIDES? What about a song by Neil YOUNG? Did you visit the YMCA? Did you learn how to YODEL or speak YIDDISH? Do you eat the YOLKS of eggs? Ever get stung by YELLOW JACKETS? I remember a teacher with a YARDSTICK. Did you play with a YO-YO when you were a child? I’m sure there are plenty more great Y posts over YONDER. That’s all from this YANKEE. I’ll see YA’ALL tomorrow.

Cheers,

Validation and Verification

The world we live in now has become a place where honesty is not valid. A man’s word has lost its value. One bad apple has ruined the whole basket. In my position I must verify and validate each person I am speaking with before releasing any information. Too many times I have to turn people away because they are unable to confirm who they are. I understand the frustration.

The rule is not to use the same password for multiple applications. Really? What genius came up with this?

• Don’t write the password down.
• Make the password something easy.
• Not something someone else can easily figure out.
• Include a number, special character, and capital letter.

No wonder people get frustrated. I feel bad for the elderly who get taken advantage of too often. If I could smack all the hackers who ruined it for everyone I would.

Validation and verification is to protect you. It is frustrating but there are others who are pretending to be someone they are not.

How many of you have experienced the validation, verification and authentication process when logging into any number of applications?

Cheers,

P.S. I’m really surprised by the number of spam comments I get.  That folder needs to be emptied on a daily.

Little Lists

I think today is the Last Supper and what a great post idea that would be for the letter L. I’m sure someone much more knowledgeable than myself will write about it. I’m going to stick to the things I am good at. I am good at little lists.

I make grocery lists in the order of where the items are in the grocery store. They cannot be out of order either or I’ll write the list over. Lists of housework chores are never-ending. I have a bi-monthly list of bills to pay. My list of correspondence to catch up on keeps getting misplaced and I start the list over more times than not.

I have garden lists of veggies and what I want to plant.  I have flower lists of what I planted and where in my flower garden, that I keep forgetting to write down the new additions. I have lists of projects I want to do. Lists of items that need to be purchased in order to do the projects on the list of undertakings I want to do. These are just my little lists. You should see the lists that Tall Cool ☺ne has! I leave little notes in his lunch box too, sometimes they have lists on them, but he tells me he has his own lists that I don’t need to give him anymore. (We do not do “Honey Do” lists.)

What about you? Do you make lists? Are you able to complete them? Do you find that it is helpful in time management? I’d love to hear your thoughts. And hey, congratulations, we are half-way through the A2Z challenge.

Cheers,

Kneading Kindness

Situations we’re put in are for a season
Doesn’t matter why, God knows the reason
Trials and tribulations will come to pass
Work is done for God, not the jackass
I struggle to get through the hours each day
Without my temper going into play
There’s a bone of contention between us two
The first rock was thrown, doesn’t matter who
God doesn’t give us more than we can bear
He’s got my back, so Satan, beware!
I’ll bite my tongue and hold my thoughts
I walked in those shoes of “wanna-be-hotshots”
And with each day, I’ll thank God and pray
‘Cause even the bad guys might need kindness today.

Cheers,

Garbage

Fresh brewed coffee waif woke Leroy and he squinted at the red blur on the digital clock. It was hard to make out what time it was, but the smell of bacon and grits was indication enough that it was time to make hay while the sun was shining ….

She’s Wicked Smart (But uglier than a mud fence)
To coin a phrase, it’s a dog eat dog world out there. Every cloud has a silver lining and every dog has its day. Mark my words the name of the game is not to jump on the bandwagon and just between you and me I don’t mean to flog a dead horse but I’ve got the gift of gab. A little bird told me half the battle is getting there and Rome wasn’t built in a day. Sometimes you gotta go back to the drawing board. It’ll all come out in the wash and to cut a long story short, the show must go on. Just for the record I’m not reinventing the wheel because you can’t teach an old dog a new trick. I got a bone of contention and would like to call it a day, but face facts, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. It’s the calm before the storm, and I ain’t no blushing bride, so I might as well bite the bullet because beggars can’t be choosers. Somethings are a blessing in disguise even when we want to avoid it like the plague. So far so good … this post might be the greatest thing since sliced bread no expense spared. This is a golden opportunity for the movers and shakers; the more the merrier and I’ll move the goalposts or bite the bullet because actions speak louder than words. The early bird gets the worm at the crack of dawn and I won’t drown in my sorrows if this is sour grapes. Not to put too fine a point on it but, lock stock and barrel this is a level playing field and let’s face it, I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck so let bygones be bygones. You can’t win them all in the rat race and the kiss of death will kill with kindness but let’s keep the wolf from the door. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen and the happy couple will be as good as gold or jam tomorrow. I think I hit the nail on the head with this post. It’s the honest truth and my how time flies when you’re having fun. Needless to say, no news is good news and the name of the game is a moot point or a vicious circle and just in the nick of time when it’s all said and done I’ve come to my famous last words: I’ll be waiting with baited breath to hear your favorite clichés.

This post was supposed to be a short story including GRITS, SWEET TEA and SITTIN’ ON THE PORCH for my friend, Mr. Goodman, but somehow I got distracted. Muse gets away from me sometimes. And take note of the picture I included with the post?  It doesn’t even have anything to do with it.  All garbage… ha ha ha.  Don’t give up hope, it’ll come to me.

Cheers,

Eating Healthy

When you hear eating healthy, what comes to mind? Probably the food you put in your mouth right? Salads, greens, more fiber? Yeah that’s a good thing to practice, but healthy eating is not just what we feed our bellies. Healthy eating is how we live our lives. What we consume into our beings.

I remember a long time ago when Tall Cool ☺ne was first prescribed blood pressure medicine. I asked the good doctor if he could still eat pizza and drink beer. The doctor kind of grinned and then said, “Honey, it’s not what your husband is eating, it’s what’s eating him.”

Healthy consumption of life. What we put into our lives is as important as what we put into our bellies. We must strive to not let Satan tempt us with something we don’t have. He pointed Eve to the one thing in the Garden of Eden that was forbidden. Instead of being thankful for the many good things that were freely available (the garden was filled with luscious desirable fruits), she focused on that one thing God said not to touch. Negative focus darkened her mind, and she succumbed to the temptation.

Practice thanksgiving, take nothing for granted; salvation, sunshine, the song of a cardinal on a tree branch first thing in the morning. Changing the way we think, changes the way we feel and practicing the discipline of thanksgiving is more than eating healthy. It’s a way of life.

Cheers,
