Assistive Technology Respite Kit Loans

Respite Kits Overview:

Respite gives primary caregivers a break, so they can rest, travel, or spend time with family and friends. The break can last from a few hours to several weeks. A primary caregiver is someone who takes care of another person every day, like a parent caring for a child or an adult caring for an elderly family member.

Our Respite Kits provide assistive technology (AT) to help people with disabilities, mobility, or cognitive decline do tasks more independently. This makes it easier for caregivers to take breaks because their loved ones need less help. The kits are loaned out for a short time after talking with Oklahoma ABLE Tech staff. The kits focus on three main areas: Sensory, Daily Living, and Safety.

Requirements for Borrowing a Kit:

  • Anyone who provides care can apply, whether it’s for a family member or a friend.
  • Caregivers need to fill out a consultation form, and ABLE Tech staff will schedule a meeting to talk about what they need and teach them how to use the assistive technology.
  • Caregivers can borrow the kit for up to 6 weeks.

Tips for Successful Loans

  • An adult’s name is required on the account and application. We cannot loan to minors. The loan agreement is a legal, binding contract.
  • The person applying is responsible and liable for the device and is to ensure all borrowed items are returned by their due date.
  • Keep the shipping materials and paperwork sent with the device loan to return the device(s) to Oklahoma ABLE Tech by the work due date. The Device Loan Program specialists will include a return shipping label in the box for you to use.
  • If the device you want to request shows zero available in NATADS, all those devices are currently out on loan. Please continue to submit a loan request, and you will be added to the waitlist.
  • There is no fee to borrow an item from the Device Loan Program. However, if items are not returned by the due date, fees may apply. Read the documentation sent with the items carefully to ensure you do not incur fees for non-returns or late returns.
  • When you complete an application to borrow a device, you are agreeing to specific liability statements and a return policy. Please read it carefully!

Device Loan Success Story

Ariana smiling with her BrailleNote Touch 32 Plus

Ariana Richardson is a 21-year-old student who is blind and uses AT in the school setting. Her device had to be returned to the company for repair, so she contacted ABLE Tech to use the device loan program. ABLE Tech was able to loan a BrailleNote Touch 32 Plus to Ariana to use for school. The BrailleNote Touch 32 Plus is a powerful note-taker packed with educational tools that allows users like Ariana to be independent in the classroom.

The BrailleNote Touch 32 Plus has an interface that is easy to learn for both students and teachers, combining the benefits of KeySoft and braille literacy of a traditional note taker, with the efficiency and power of a modern smartphone or tablet. It is the first certified Braille Tablet providing Play Store access. Ariana was able to borrow the device from ABLE Tech and not skip a beat with her educational goals while her device was being repaired.
