IRSE Membership & Professional Registration

The Institution of Railway Signal Engineering (IRSE) offers a structured pathway for professionals in railway signalling, telecoms, and control systems to gain recognition, develop their careers, and achieve professional registration.

IRSE Membership

IRSE membership is open to individuals at all stages of their career, from students to senior engineers, with grades ranging from Affiliate and Technician levels through to Associate Member (AMIRSE), Member (MIRSE), and Fellow (FIRSE), reflecting increasing levels of experience, responsibility, and professional competence.

Membership provides formal recognition of competence and experience through membership grades, supports structured Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and assists members in registering for the IRSE Advanced Diploma in Railway Control Engineering, as well as achieving Engineering Council professional registration (EngTech, IEng, CEng). Members gain access to technical resources, industry publications, and the latest standards, while networking opportunities through regional sections, special interest groups, and international events and conventions foster collaboration and career growth.

Apply for IRSE Membership

Applying for membership involves submitting an application form with supporting evidence of your experience and qualifications. Most grades require proposer support from existing IRSE members. Individuals can also apply to upgrade their membership as their career progresses.

Membership Benefits & Fees

IRSE Membership offers a comprehensive range of benefits to support professional development, industry engagement, and career progression in railway signalling and telecommunications with global recognition enhancing professional credibility and mobility. Additional benefits include discounted rates on training, conferences, and publications.

Annual subscription fees vary by grade, with discounted options for students, retirees, and those choosing digital-only access. Membership runs on a yearly cycle.

Professional Registration

The IRSE is licensed by the UK’s Engineering Council to award the titles of:

  • Engineering Technician (EngTech)
