IRSE ASPECT conferences

The ASPECT series of conferences can be traced back to the first IRSE International Conference held at the IEE's Savoy Place London building in 1984. Despite being a success, the next conference wasn't held until 1991 when the first ASPECT event was held, also in London.

This was the first time that the ASPECT name was used, being an acronym covering

  • Automation
  • Signalling
  • Performance
  • Equipment
  • Control, and
  • Telecommunications

Events were held in London in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2015 and then in 2017 was successfully held in Singapore. ASPECT 2019 was held in Delft, Netherlands, Melbourne Australia hosted in 2023 and Yokohama Japan in 2025.

The conferences have provided a true opportunity for the signalling and telecoms industry to come together and share inforamtion in a way that few commercial events can achieve.

Due to the extremly hard work of the organising committees, and through the generosity of sponsoring and supporting organisations, each event has built on the last, and ASPECT has a great future ahead of it.

The organising committee is already working on plans for ASPECT 2027 which will be announced as soon as possible.

ASPECT 2025 was held in Yokohoma Japan in December 2025

The ASPECT 2025 conference was a very successful event, attended by 270 people from 23 countries. Fifty two technical papers were presented with additional interactive sessions and technical visits.

Our ASPECT 2025 organising committee have put together this document to help everyone plan to get their visa to enter Japan in good time. Please read and action as soon as possible.

Information on obtaining Japan entrance visa

IRSE Innovator comes to Japan! This Younger Members-led session was a great success at ASPECT 2023, so is going on the road to Japan - click here for more details

The 2025 ASPECT IRSE Innovators session comprises of a panel of judges, composed of experienced professionals, and the young members presenters, who will represent the entrepreneurs. The presenters will then “pitch” their railway-related innovation idea to the judges, who will ask questions, challenge the idea, and ultimately pass judgement. Finally, the judges will decide which idea is the best. Whilst there will be no ‘investment’, the best idea will receive a small prize.

Innovators are all IRSE Younger Members.

Successful authors have been contacted with details of what further details are required. Click here for further information.

Thank you to everyone who submitted abstracts to the ASPECT 2025 committee.

ASPECT 2023

ASPECT 2023 was held in Melbourne Australia in November 2023 and delivered fifty two technical papers from global industry experts on the theme of Global Integration and also featured several related workshop sessions.

Delegates were drawn from around the world and brought an amazing spread of expertise, knowledge, skills and experience. There was a range of industry experts, specialists and generalists as well as graduates and those who were new to the industry. They included representatives from the rail operators (private and public), equipment and techology suppliers, government delivery organisations, regulators, academic institutions, contractors and consultants.
