Library Research Tutorials Available on Canvas Commons
Students need to be taught Library Research Instruction more than one time.
With new content, students need to re-learn research techniques.
The Library has created online Library Research lessons to help students navigate the research process. The stand-alone lessons are designed for the faculty's ease of use and can be used as an online alternative or in addition to F2F Research Instruction.
- Embed in Canvas class at point-of-need
- Flip class - have students complete Research lessons outside class
- Easily shared in Canvas to connect with Grade Book
- Lesson material tied to learning outcomes
- Blocks of information are progressively “chunked”
- Text, images, videos, charts, activities, and assessments aimed at different learning abilities and preferences
- Activities are frequent and varied
- Topics and materials are up to date and relevant
- Lessons cover the following learning objectives:
- Know how to access Library materials from off-campus
- Define basic library/academic vocabulary
- Identify the steps required in the research process
- Distinguish valid keywords for a search
- Demonstrate understanding of citations and references in correct APA, MLA, or Chicago format
- Understand the differences between using the Search It All tool and individual databases
- Apply Search techniques in the most relevant databases
This tutorial module includes lessons to be assigned when teaching a Learning Frameworks class. Three lessons are available (you can choose the lessons you want to use):

- Access Commons from your Canvas account.
- Click on the "Search" tab, Set the filter to "WC Library"
- Click on the tutorial for "Learning Frameworks Week 6"
- Click on "Import/Download"
- Choose the class to import the tutorial into.
- After the tutorial has been loaded into your class, determine which lessons you want to use.
- To set the assignment settings, follow the instructions in this guide, Faculty Instructions for Assignments Setting.
This tutorial includes lessons to be assigned BEFORE the scheduled Librarian visit to your class. Students completing the lessons will have an overview of library vocabulary, techniques for exploring their topic (or picking a topic), creating research questions, and creating search keywords, as well as APA or MLA style basics.

- Access Commons from your Canvas account.
- Click on the "Search" tab, Set the filter to "WC Library"
- Click on the tutorial for "Assign before scheduled Librarian Visit."
- Click on "Import/Download"
- Choose the class to import the tutorial into.
- After the tutorial has loaded in your class, determine which Citation lesson you want to use and "Remove" either the APA or MLA lesson.

This tutorial includes lessons to be assigned when teaching an online class OR teaching without a librarian's visit to your class. Students completing the lessons will have an overview of library vocabulary, techniques for exploring their topic, creating search keywords, and search techniques using Search It All and/or individual databases.
- Access Commons from your Canvas account.
- Click on the "Search" tab, Set the filter to "WC Library"
- Click on the tutorial for "Online class or NO Librarian visit"
- Click on "Import/Download"
- Choose the class to import the tutorial into.
- After the tutorial has been loaded into your class, determine which Citation lesson you want to use and delete either APA or MLA.

Getting Ready for a New Semester
Library Changes That Might Affect Your Class Assignments
The Library has seen many changes that could change your assignments. Do you:
- Provide the library web address in your assignments?
- Suggest library databases to search?
- Have screenshots of the Library website in your assignments?
1. The Library web address has changed:

2. Rather than specifying one or two databases to search, guide students to Search It All:

Suggest "Academic Search Complete," "EBSCOhost," or any other database. Many of the general EBSCO databases will no longer be available after 8/31/2023. |
Click on Search It All in the blue navigation bar to search multiple databases simultaneously (or physical items.) (By encouraging students to search using Search It All, you will not need to worry if there are changes to database subscriptions.) |

Library Home PageUse the blue navigation bar and choose "Search It All" (suggested) or "Databases" to start a search.

Search It All Search BoxClick on the blue navigation bar - "Search It All" to search for physical items and articles from multiple databases simultaneously. Put your keywords in the Search Box.

Choose Individual Databases by SubjectClick on the blue navigation bar - "Databases" to search for individual databases by title or subject.
