The American Center, part of the U.S. Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Section, hosts a public library, access to unrestricted internet, and a meeting place for its various programs and initiatives. The mission of the American Center is to share information about the United States and its policies to Turkmen audiences. The American Center is open to the general public during its operating hours.
The American Center maintains a collection of almost 9,000 books, including reference works, fiction, and non-fiction, and subscribes to about 30 leading American print periodicals. American Center visitors may use the Center’s computers and ipads to access the internet and use educational learning apps. Our iPads come pre-loaded with books, podcasts, English-language learning games, STEM learning, and other reference materials. The American Center also has a substantial collection of American movies in English and Russian, which patrons are welcome to watch at the Center. A dedicated American Center staff member is available to assist visitors in locating source materials for research projects and to provide tutorials on how to find specific information on the Internet.
Currently American Center offers an eLibrary database, powered by Overdrive. The eLibrary database offers a variety of ebooks, audiobooks, and electronic editions of popular U.S. magazines. Those with a library card can activate their account by visiting the American Center and start downloading instantly. eLibrary continually grows, adding new materials each month. Learn more about the American Center’s eLibrary here and check out our catalog.
The American Center is well known in the community for its regular English-language activities, such as conversation groups with native speakers, workshops with visiting specialists, and regular presentations by Americans on U.S. life and culture.
