Just wanted to say hello, for those of you still here. :)

Sushi Taisho

Sushi Taisho
300 Carlsbad Village Dr # 214
Carlsbad, CA 92008
(760) 729-2437
Pricing: Specialty rolls are usually between $10-14
Accepts credit cards

I've been here a couple of times and have been happy with all my visits.

On my first visit, I opted for their all-you-can-eat-lunch special (every day 11:30am-3pm) for $20, bar seating only. Unfortunately, it does not include their specialty rolls. However, they still make tasty classics such as the Rainbow Roll, Caterpillar, etc. They don't use too much rice and their fish portions are not sparse. I certainly ate more than $20 worth. :)

The next time I went for dinner so I had to go with their regular menu which got no complaints from me. Their specialty rolls are awesome. I highly recommend the Honey Roll and the Homeless Roll. There is one roll that I was not too impressed with. It consists of various sashimi, including salmon, wrapped in cucumber. Sounds tasty but the cucumber suprisingly overpowers the mild flavor of the sashimi. I would skip this roll for something else.

The place is small so go early for dinner as it can get packed. They also have outside patio seating. There's usually only 2 waitresses working the both times I was there so sometimes you have to flag them down for drink refills.

Nozumi review

-Restaurant Name: Nozumi
-Hours / Schedule: Lunch and dinner (not sure about times)
-Location: Convoy St in the Seoul Plaza in between the Hanmi Bank and Aqua Day Spa
-URL (if they have one) and any contact info: nope
-Review: see below
-Rating: 4
-Pricing: $$ 10-30/credit cards.

Nozumi = good sushi.
4 pages worth of specialty rolls = OMG WTF am I going to order?
Free internet access + movie on the tv (they were showing Madagascar...) = cool!.

I tried the Convoy roll (spicy tuna topped with hamachi), the Ninja roll (spicy tuna topped with spicy scallop), and the Dragon roll (shrimp tempura topped with unagi). All tasty and the Ninja roll actually had a kick to it. Also tried a piece of the spicy cilantro roll (spicy tuna as well I think?), Sunday Morning roll (salmon, cream cheese, tempura-battered fried), crunch roll and the black tiger roll (can't remember...spicy tuna as well probably). I definitely liked the Sunday Morning roll as they were light on the tempura batter and frying so that the roll itself wasn't overpowered. The other ones were tasty as well. :)

They do present the sushi in a pretty way. gcat ordered the 007 roll and it came out with the pieces arrange to spell "007" and the chef wrote "hands up" in the creamy orange mayo on the plate. ^_^

Definately a "will return" place. The prices were the usual sushi bar prices but for some reason, I think their rolls are bigger (in terms of # of pieces).

It's touted as a "noodle house" but don't be fooled....it's a decent sushi place as well.

OKI TON JAPANESE BISTRO

Yesterday before heading into the madness that was the big IKEA sale in Mission Valley, I stopped in OKI TON JAPANESE BISTRO, which is right next to the McDonalds in the same shopping center as IKEA. The atmosphere of the place is nice and clean. I ate at the sushi bar - the menu had all the standard rolls (Philly, Spider, Volcano, etc.), but not too many truly unique creations. Very strangely, I didn't see any Nigiri on the menu. I'm sure I could have asked for some, but it just wasn't listed anywere I looked. I ended up going with the STAR roll, which had Spicy Tuna and cucumber in the middle and albacore on top. There were probably 8 pieces included for a total of $13.54 after tax. I lived in Yokohama, JPN for 2 years, so I am a sushi-snob, but this place was pretty good. I'd probably give it 3 (out of 5) stars. Admittedly, I only tried one roll, so it may not be a truly fair assessment....

Ono Sushi

It's in Hillcrest, on University and I want to say 10th. Right by the Blockbuster.

1/2 price maki on Mondays 5-7PM. Best edamame I've had in this city. And the service is awesome.

Go there :-)

cool!

Finally I find a sushi community for San Diego! Yay. Today my friend and me went to Ichiban *my first time eating sushi*...more posted in my LJ.

-Restaurant Name - Ichiban
-Hours / Schedule - didn't notice *too many people crowded*
-Location *uh...near/by Balboa Park?*
-URL (if they have one) and any contact info - nah...*was too rushed*
-Review - For eating sushi, I'd say that the service was good. Everything was moving along fine. My CA Roll was 8 pieces and it was great! I enjoyed it, even though I didn't know how to use chopsticks. The staff were very friendly and the place looked very clean.
-Rating: Hmm...for my first time eating sushi, my CA Roll would definitely be 5 stars.
-Pricing: I didn't get a good look at the prices, as I said it was quick, but I'd say from about 0 to 15 at the most.

So, I loved my CA Roll...I also plan to eat at Sushi Deli 2 when possible. I really want some sake, even though it'll be my first time drinking sake too, but meh.

Late night sushi

How late do Sushi restaurants usually stay open until, & do you know of any that stay open later than 9 or 10pm?
Also, have any of you been to the bars that offer sushi until 2am in the morning, is it any good at such low prices? I read in the Reader of one place selling it $1.00 per sushi order.

The live journal roll ..

Hi I just Joined I Live In san diego and Love sushi ...woo hoo ;P

Birthday Dinner:

Anyone here live in Oceanside? We have our fair share of sushi bars, but unfortunatly I think there should be more. I only know of three places:

Go Go Japan: I love this place because it's right by my house and fairly cheep. Awesome service, their head sushi chef has over 20 years experience!

Hanas: This is probably the best one, they let you customize your own sushi! But it is very expensive.

There is also another I saw next to Kinko's on Vista Way.. It was really cheep, and looked almost like they were either new or moving out.

There may be more, but I haven't seen them!
