Sushi Taisho

Sushi Taisho
300 Carlsbad Village Dr # 214
Carlsbad, CA 92008
(760) 729-2437
Pricing: Specialty rolls are usually between $10-14
Accepts credit cards

I've been here a couple of times and have been happy with all my visits.

On my first visit, I opted for their all-you-can-eat-lunch special (every day 11:30am-3pm) for $20, bar seating only. Unfortunately, it does not include their specialty rolls. However, they still make tasty classics such as the Rainbow Roll, Caterpillar, etc. They don't use too much rice and their fish portions are not sparse. I certainly ate more than $20 worth. :)

The next time I went for dinner so I had to go with their regular menu which got no complaints from me. Their specialty rolls are awesome. I highly recommend the Honey Roll and the Homeless Roll. There is one roll that I was not too impressed with. It consists of various sashimi, including salmon, wrapped in cucumber. Sounds tasty but the cucumber suprisingly overpowers the mild flavor of the sashimi. I would skip this roll for something else.

The place is small so go early for dinner as it can get packed. They also have outside patio seating. There's usually only 2 waitresses working the both times I was there so sometimes you have to flag them down for drink refills.

Nozumi review

-Restaurant Name: Nozumi
-Hours / Schedule: Lunch and dinner (not sure about times)
-Location: Convoy St in the Seoul Plaza in between the Hanmi Bank and Aqua Day Spa
-URL (if they have one) and any contact info: nope
-Review: see below
-Rating: 4
-Pricing: $$ 10-30/credit cards.

Nozumi = good sushi.
4 pages worth of specialty rolls = OMG WTF am I going to order?
Free internet access + movie on the tv (they were showing Madagascar...) = cool!.

I tried the Convoy roll (spicy tuna topped with hamachi), the Ninja roll (spicy tuna topped with spicy scallop), and the Dragon roll (shrimp tempura topped with unagi). All tasty and the Ninja roll actually had a kick to it. Also tried a piece of the spicy cilantro roll (spicy tuna as well I think?), Sunday Morning roll (salmon, cream cheese, tempura-battered fried), crunch roll and the black tiger roll (can't remember...spicy tuna as well probably). I definitely liked the Sunday Morning roll as they were light on the tempura batter and frying so that the roll itself wasn't overpowered. The other ones were tasty as well. :)

They do present the sushi in a pretty way. gcat ordered the 007 roll and it came out with the pieces arrange to spell "007" and the chef wrote "hands up" in the creamy orange mayo on the plate. ^_^

Definately a "will return" place. The prices were the usual sushi bar prices but for some reason, I think their rolls are bigger (in terms of # of pieces).

It's touted as a "noodle house" but don't be fooled....it's a decent sushi place as well.

OKI TON JAPANESE BISTRO

Yesterday before heading into the madness that was the big IKEA sale in Mission Valley, I stopped in OKI TON JAPANESE BISTRO, which is right next to the McDonalds in the same shopping center as IKEA. The atmosphere of the place is nice and clean. I ate at the sushi bar - the menu had all the standard rolls (Philly, Spider, Volcano, etc.), but not too many truly unique creations. Very strangely, I didn't see any Nigiri on the menu. I'm sure I could have asked for some, but it just wasn't listed anywere I looked. I ended up going with the STAR roll, which had Spicy Tuna and cucumber in the middle and albacore on top. There were probably 8 pieces included for a total of $13.54 after tax. I lived in Yokohama, JPN for 2 years, so I am a sushi-snob, but this place was pretty good. I'd probably give it 3 (out of 5) stars. Admittedly, I only tried one roll, so it may not be a truly fair assessment....

Finally I find a sushi community for San Diego! Yay. Today my friend and me went to Ichiban *my first time eating sushi*...more posted in my LJ.

-Restaurant Name - Ichiban
-Hours / Schedule - didn't notice *too many people crowded*
-Location *uh...near/by Balboa Park?*
-URL (if they have one) and any contact info - nah...*was too rushed*
-Review - For eating sushi, I'd say that the service was good. Everything was moving along fine. My CA Roll was 8 pieces and it was great! I enjoyed it, even though I didn't know how to use chopsticks. The staff were very friendly and the place looked very clean.
-Rating: Hmm...for my first time eating sushi, my CA Roll would definitely be 5 stars.
-Pricing: I didn't get a good look at the prices, as I said it was quick, but I'd say from about 0 to 15 at the most.

So, I loved my CA Roll...I also plan to eat at Sushi Deli 2 when possible. I really want some sake, even though it'll be my first time drinking sake too, but meh.

How late do Sushi restaurants usually stay open until, & do you know of any that stay open later than 9 or 10pm?
Also, have any of you been to the bars that offer sushi until 2am in the morning, is it any good at such low prices? I read in the Reader of one place selling it $1.00 per sushi order.

Birthday Dinner:
I'm doing laser tag (in Point Loma) for my birthday on a Saturday and we'll be going for dinner afterwards. I was thinking of going to the Islands in Eastlake, but they don't take reservations and it's kind of out of the way from Point Loma. We'll be eating dinner around 6pm and will mainly be coming from Chula Vista or Point Loma. What are some 'dinner-type' places (not fast food) you'd recommend between Point Loma-Chula Vista (within a price range of $1-15.00 per plate). There's a Padres home game that weekend, so Gaslamp/Old Town is out.
Thanks so much for all appropriate suggestions. ^_^

Anyone here live in Oceanside? We have our fair share of sushi bars, but unfortunatly I think there should be more. I only know of three places:

Go Go Japan: I love this place because it's right by my house and fairly cheep. Awesome service, their head sushi chef has over 20 years experience!

Hanas: This is probably the best one, they let you customize your own sushi! But it is very expensive.

There is also another I saw next to Kinko's on Vista Way.. It was really cheep, and looked almost like they were either new or moving out.

There may be more, but I haven't seen them!

Fabulous sushi place

There's a great place called Sushiya over in the Stater Bros. shopping center off the Rancho Penasquitos exit on the 56. Most of their nigiri and rolls are 50% off all the time but it's pretty high quality stuff...small amount of rice, huge piece of fishy.

I recommend the snowball roll which is a bit spicy and the spicy albacore roll.

Zensei's take on miso is revelatory. Emeril might even describe it as "kicked up," possibly to notches heretofore unknown. I can't count the number of times I've had lame miso soup -- thin, milky broth with a few sad tofu nugs afloat and some token green onion slices, the only flavor coming from the soy sauce I pour in. Zensei's miso soup, on the other hand, is rich and complex with a deeply flavored broth, toasted sesame seeds, tofu, green onions, chives and a generous quantity of fresh shiitake mushrooms. Simply put, this is the best miso soup I've had, and it is a bargain at $2.50."

The second part is a full review courtesy of vmoney, originally posted over in the San Diego Eats community.

Last night 3 of my friends and I went to a late dinner at Zensei. I had read the article in the City Beat a few weeks ago and of course I live nearby and have observed it's slow evolution. The first weekend it opened, I had cruised by on my bicycle and stopped in just to get a look around. The interior is painted a surprisingly pleasing a dark pink-red color and the red vinyl po-mo chairs are actually quite comfortable, it looked to have potential. So yesterday morning I made a reservation for three, per City Beat's recommendation for weekend accomodations and later that night we all arrived around 8:00PM.

The first thing I will say is, Sashimi, Sashimi, Sashimi! The sashimi was excellent. They offer a nice option of 10 pieces of Sashimi ranging from Seared Albacore Tuna to Yellow Tail (sans rice, thank god, as I have seen more then not, faux Sushi joints blob a spoonful of rice down and lay the tiny fillet on top of it duncing it 'Sashimi'', that would be a negative, ghostrider.) The Yellow Tail was to-die-for; the Salmon was so delicately smoked, hinting at a bit of woodsy aftertaste and well, the pickled ginger strips were strong, whoo-wee! Of course we also ordered 5 rolls, ranging from a general Spicy Tuna roll to a Mt. Fuji bit and some Caterpillar rolls. The gourmet rolls were all excellent, but I have always been a fan of the more simple rolls with less panache and more singular gruffness... unfortunately I did not see the place mat right before me with more options for Unagi (eel roll) and Octopus rolls etc... in accompaniment we imbibed 4 unfiltered Nigiri chilled Sake. It was delicious... I think if I had not been so tired and Zensei stayed open a little bit longer I think we could have all polished off a few more bottles.

By the end of the night we had enjoyed a fantastic meal, was compelled into some great conversation, felt tickishly tipsy and all agreed that Zensei was going to go on our places-to-eat-anytime list. Our bill (totaled with tip) included around $100 dollars. And that I think is most definitely reasonable between 4 people and 4 bottles of Sake...yummm. The environment could honestly inspire just a vibrant fun atmosphere for friends or a very sexy metropolitanish atmospshere for dates and any what ifs you got going for later in the night. If you are a fan of the North Park-via-Golden Hill neighborhoods, this is a great place to make your mark and support local businesses.

-Rating: 5 out of 5.
-Pricing: $$ (Based on reviewer's party + drinks + full meal + tip, I am averaging.)

Is also closed on Mondays entirely, and between 3 and 5 (switching from lunch to dinner).
-Location: 4475 Mission Blvd
-Contact Info: 858.270.1986

-Review: This is one of my favorites because 1)it's within walking distance and 2)you don't have to pay twenty bucks and end up with a tiny portion. The last time I'd gone I sat at the sushi bar, which is definitely a fun experience in itself. Little boats of yummy things float around and you choose what you want, and the chefs are constantly busy restocking the boats so it's always fresh. The first experience cost me about $22 for roughly 6 platters of nigiri, miso soup, and a drink; about the average price I pay. It's a very small restaurant so it can get crowded, but the staff makes you feel appreciated as much as they can, and you generally aren't waiting long.
My most recent trip there was Friday night with a girl friend of mine. The only dismay I had (their Sushi Combination Box was takeout only) was quickly rectified when I saw they had almost the exact same thing available for dine-in. We sat at the tables and had a nice view of the foot traffic on Garnet Avenue. I ordered their Sushi Combination (for dine-in), which was four pieces of nigiri, four pieces of spicy tuna roll, miso soup, and a salad. Somewhere around $15 including the dirnk. My friend had a cucumber roll, miso soup, and steamed rice (she wasn't feeling very well/hungry anyway), but she proclaimed that for five bucks, she was actually really full. I said the same thing and we got out for under twenty bucks!
Kabuki has made me not hate seaweed again - their rolls are well put-together and very tasty. The nigiri melted in my mouth, and the salad was topped off with this interesting honey/vinegrette-tasting sauce that sort of looked like Quaker Instant Oatmeal. A first for me but very good. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants great food for a low price. Not a five-star by any means, but very clean and welcoming - even their restrooms were good. :)

-Rating: 5 out of 5.
-Pricing: $$ (Based on a 2-person, average meal with drinks and sides.)
