Visit the United States

Notice

Effective January 21, 2026, the Department of State paused all immigrant visa issuances to nationals of countries whose immigrants have a high rate of collecting public assistance at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer. Immigrant visa applicants who are nationals of impacted countries may submit visa applications and attend interviews, and the Department of State will continue to schedule consular appointments for visa interviews. Read more about the immigrant visa processing updates for nationalities at high risk of public benefits reliance.

Starting January 21, 2026, nationals of 75 countries who are found otherwise eligible for a B1/B2 visa must post a bond of up to $15,000. At the time of the interview, the consular officer will inform the applicant whether they are eligible for a visa and will provide instructions on how to pay this bond. Applicants must not use any third-party website for posting the bond, nor pay a bond before instructed to do so by a consular officer. B1/B2 visas for nationals of these countries cannot be issued until the bond has been paid. This requirement applies regardless of place of application.

Barcode Matching Policy Affecting All Non-Immigrant Visa Applicants

U.S. Embassy Muscat is enforcing a DS-160 Barcode Matching Policy.  After you complete an application for a nonimmigrant visa (DS-160), the system generates a confirmation page that includes a unique barcode number.  This barcode number is very important!  When you make an appointment for a nonimmigrant visa, you are required to input that DS-160 barcode number into the appointment scheduling system. The barcode you input into the appointment scheduling system must match the barcode number on your DS-160 confirmation page.  Please bring the DS-160 confirmation page to your interview appointment. If the barcode numbers do not match on the day of your interview, your interview appointment will be cancelled.

Approved applicants will not return to the U.S. Embassy to pick up their visas. All approved visa applicants must retrieve their printed visas from an Aramex location. Pick-up from the Al Mabelah location is free of charge. Applicants may opt to pick up from Aramex’s locations in Al Azaiba, Salalah, or Sohar for a fee when filling out the visa application.

Important Note:  Applicants must provide accurate contact information when creating your www.ustraveldocs.com profile.  This information will be used to contact you via email or text when your visa is ready for pick-up.  Only applicants who list a local Omani phone number will be contacted via text message.

Omani Residents: Certain qualified Omani residents who are renewing their U.S. tourist and business visas (B1/B2 or B2) may be eligible to apply for their visa online without coming to the embassy for an interview. For more information on whether or not you qualify, please visit the U.S. Embassy in Muscat’s Global Support Services (GSS) website at https://www.ustraveldocs.com/om/om-niv-visarenew.asp.

What is a Visa?

A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport.

Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program, which is administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Visa section of this website is about U.S. visas for foreign citizens and nationals to travel to the United States.

Visit Travel.State.gov for additional information.

Note: U.S. citizens do not need a U.S. visa for travel to the United States. When planning travel abroad a U.S. citizen may need a visa issued by the embassy or consulate of the country they wish to visit.

What Type of Visa Do You Need?

For short-term visits to the United States (for tourism, business, education, and more), you can go directly to the online application (form DS-160). For immigrant visas,  which are issued to foreign nationals who intend to live and work permanently in the United States, you can visit the U.S. citizenship and Immigration Services site for the relevant forms.  If you are unsure what type of visa you need, please use the Visa Wizard below.

Examples of accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • If you require a private appointment due to a medical condition or disability, we may schedule an alternative time for you to come in for your interview.
  • If you or your child has special needs that requires a private appointment in a quiet space without distractions, we may schedule an alternative time for you or your family to come in for your interview.
  • If you are unable to speak, you may be allowed to respond to questions in an agreed-upon nonverbal manner such as using pen and paper.
  • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
  • If you have low vision, we may provide you with communications in large print.
  • If you are unable to provide fingerprints because of a medical condition, including birth defects, physical deformities, skin conditions, you may qualify for a fingerprint waiver for certain fingers.
