Interstate Tariffs – Coming Soon

The NJ Movers Tariff Bureau is developing a new compliance resource for movers: a Model Interstate Household Goods Tariff designed specifically for independent interstate household goods carriers.

This tariff is intended for movers who operate independently and is not designed for, nor intended to replace, tariffs used by major van lines or agency-based systems.

What This Tariff Is

  • A model interstate household goods tariff framework

  • Designed to help independent movers meet federal tariff requirements

  • Customizable so each carrier can insert their own rates, charges, and elections

  • Structured to be maintained by the carrier and made available for inspection upon request

What This Tariff Is Not

  • Not a van line or agency tariff

  • Not a rate-setting service

  • Not a managed or published tariff on behalf of the mover

  • Not legal advice or regulatory filing with the government

Why This Matters

Federal Compliance
Interstate household goods movers are required to maintain a tariff under applicable regulations administered by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Clarity & Consistency
A properly maintained tariff establishes clear rules, charges, and procedures for interstate shipments, helping protect both movers and consumers.

Support for Independent Movers
Many independent movers struggle with building and maintaining a compliant interstate tariff. Our goal is to provide a practical, affordable, and flexible model that movers can complete and manage themselves.

How the Program Will Work

  • NJ Movers Tariff Bureau will provide a model tariff document

  • Movers who choose to adopt it will:

    • complete their own rates and selections

    • maintain their own copy (electronic or printed)

    • remain fully responsible for compliance and use

  • The tariff will be designed for easy customization and future conversion to a fillable PDF format
