HTORR Program

NDRI’s Human Tissues and Organs for Research Resource (HTORR) Program has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for almost 35 consecutive years to support all NIH-funded and academic research programs across multiple disciplines. The HTORR Program provides biomedical investigators with donated normal and diseased human tissues and organs recovered using project-specific procurement, processing, preservation and distribution protocols.

Our HTORR Program supports NIH-funded and academic biomedical research investigators’ needs by providing: 

• • Human biospecimens from any body system
  • Access to a range of donor populations
  • Project-specific procurements and preservation formats including fresh, frozen, and fixed suitable for various analytical techniques
  • Technical support to design your studies utilizing human biospecimens
  • Letters of support and budgetary information for grant applications
  • Timely response to requests and 24/7 distribution

The HTORR Program is supported by:

• NIH Office of the Director, Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP)
• National Eye Institute (NEI)
• National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)
• National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
• National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)
• National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

Researchers that are currently supported by these institutes receive additional service benefits from HTORR. Please inquire for more details. 

Pilot Award Program
The Pilot Award Program is a new component of our NIH-supported U42 program the Human Tissues and Organs for Research Resource (HTORR), and will support individuals that meet at least one of the following high priority areas:

1.  Early-stage investigators that are within 10 years of a terminal degree or completion of clinical residency.
2.  Established investigators that are transitioning to use human biospecimens.

The 2-year awards provided through our Pilot Award Program will include up to ~10 biological samples per awarded investigator, covering all costs associated with obtaining the biospecimens, including tissue preservation reagents and shipping costs. Beyond the service period and experimental analysis phase, the awardee will also receive supplementary support to develop grant applications to the NIH Institute that supported their award, and only applications that fall into the fields covered by these institutes will be reviewed.
