April Means Gardens

That’s right. Our theme for Quilt Block Mania this month is Gardens. I love gardens, but I really had a hard time with this month’s block. I decided to go with a mushroom. I love how the garden ecosystem works together.

Funny story about a mushroom. Way back in 7th grade, I took Home Ec 1 in Fall semester, and Art 1 in Spring semester. I lasted only 2 days in Art because all of my friends were taking Home Ec 2!! But in those two days, I learned how to sketch a mushroom and I can still make one to this day!! But my art work is very limited. The only other thing I can draw is a Snoopy head. Glad I stuck with fabric.

This month’s pattern actually lends itself to a variation. So you get to choose how you put your mushroom together. Will you piece the cap? Or not piece the cap? Or make one of both? It is entirely up to you.

Again, notice my fabric choices. A block, and ultimately a quilt, can really be made something extra special, just by the fabric you choose. Notice the mushroom stem on the left. This is just cotton, but the pattern makes it have some texture, and maybe a little more interest than the mushroom stem on the right.

Want to see even more? We have a Facebook group where you can post your pictures along with the designers!! Don’t forget to check out the other designers and their garden blocks. #quiltblockmania2025
