What If?

Have you ever played the “What If?” game? You know, where you have an idea or even a spark of an idea and decide to go with it and see where it leads you? Well, that’s what I did a few years ago. I was making a lot of quilts at the time and had so many triangles left over from bindings and also leftovers from HSTs. I just couldn’t bear to throw them away. So I didn’t.

Yep! I kept them. First in a jar, then that spilled over onto a shelf, and eventually onto the floor. The triangles got transferred to a couple of bigger boxes. Until, finally, this year I decided it was time to use up my triangles.

I sewed and sewed. Then trimmed and trimmed. Then stored them by size. I made the mistake of using whatever size I could get out of the fabric, but in the end I still had to trim.

Once the blocks were stitched together, I laid them out as best as I could. I didn’t measure, just eyeballed it. And started stitching again. There was quite a bit that needed to be torn out and reconfigured. The back contains some orphan blocks as well as some leftovers from the front.

Several things I will consider next time (?): First, keep all cuts at the 1/2″ and the whole inch measurements. That will help the construction go a little quicker. Second, remember there are a lot of biased edges in a project like this. A LOT!! So it will go wonky on you.

Have you done a quilt like this? Or played the “What If?” game? I would love to see your creations.
