  • Midrash Ze`eira for Mattityahu 21.14-16

    "And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them. And when the chief kohanim and sofrim saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, 'Hosha`na to the son of David;' they were sore displeased, and said unto him, 'Hearest thou what these say?' And Yeshua saith unto them, 'Yea; have ye never read, "out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?" ' "
    –Mattityahu 21.14-16

    In the Masora, we read it as: "Mippi olelim weyoneqim yissadeta oz" [מפי עוללים וינקים יסדת עז] - "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength." "Oz," though mainly given to us as "strength", also refers to "praise" and "exultation" being done in a manner of great exuberance.

    So, it may be understood, that the soft, gentle manner, or the tiniest of expressions, like that of a child's praise, is the strongest praise ever to be given. For it is by a child's faith that we are accepted into the kingdom, as the Mashiach has said:

    "Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Mattityahu 18:3-4)

    The world measures its greatness by what is biggest and strongest. But in the Mashiach, it is by the humble and the depths of their humility that one is seen as great – "the first shall be last and the last first."

    Praise is our strength! "Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise [which is our strength]?" And why is this? The Mizmor/Psalm goes on to say: "because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger!" (Tehillim 8.3) For it is also written:

    "But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Yis'rael." (Tehillim 22.4)

  • Faith without works is a dead faith. Not saying one isn't saved because they have dead faith - that judgment is Gods.

    The main verses for salvation being through faith alone, Ephesians 2.8-9, need to be read through v10. Salvation is established by grace through faith, but there is a purpose for it other than simply saving you. Read v10 as well:

    8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
    9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    10 FOR we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS, which God hath before ordained THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM.
    -Ephesians 2

    Is Paul contradicting himself here? And this comes about by studying the Scriptures, of which Paul also said:

    15 . . . thou hast known the holy scriptures, WHICH ARE able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
    16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, AND IS PROFITABLE
    *for doctrine,
    *for reproof,
    *for correction,
    *for instruction in righteousness:
    17 THAT the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished UNTO ALL GOOD WORKS.
    -2 Timothy 3

    The reason for our good works, whether keeping Sabbath, being baptised, or abstaining from evils, are not about earning salvation, but are to bring us closer to being like Christ, and by extension, to be like the character of the Father, who said, "Be holy for I am holy." And yes, we are encouraged to this goal in life, as Peter reiterated:

    13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
    14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
    15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
    16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
    -1 Peter 1

    Just because we're not saved by our own works of righteousness and holiness does not mean we are to throw our hands up and forsake striving for these things in our life. It is by this that we walk in a living, not dead, faith.

  • ``For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.``
    -Gal5.14

    If your good works aren't being done in love, then they're not being done at all. Yes, you must work, as Ephesians 2.8-10 says:

    "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, *which *God *hath *before *ordained that we should walk in them.

    This is not for Salvation's sake - not a works-based Salvation - as v9 indicates; but it is to be the fruit we're supposed to bear in Christ that our Faith may be seen as a Living Faith and not dead

    For if you're not working, how are you loving? And if you're not loving, how are you even living?
