Prof. Roberta Ryan

Professor Roberta Ryan is the inaugural Professor of Regional and Local Governance at the University of Newcastle, Australia.

An internationally recognised political sociologist, Professor Ryan's portfolio of social impact research has focused on community sentiment, education, behaviour change, and the social licence for regulation. She is widely recognised for her expertise in policy planning and implementation in complex public matters related to energy, land use, infrastructure, water, housing, greening, recreation and open space.

Professor Ryan's leadership in her field is recognised through numerous government ministerial appointments including her current role as the Independent Community Commissioner for the Western Sydney Aerotropolis and Orchard Hills, which is also supporting the review of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.

She has led national research institutes focused on urban and regional development including as Executive Director, Institute for Regional Futures, University of Newcastle, Australia; and Director, Institute of Public Policy and Governance, and the Centre of Excellence for Local Government and the Centre for Local Government, University of Technology, Sydney.
