THE HUNGER GAMES

District Trading Cards

Set of 13 Oversized Cards

From what information I have been able to gather, this set of cards was available as a promotional give-away only at the Toronto Comicon and possibly other Comicon or similar conventions, so they are exceptionally rare.

The unique package — printed on reflective foil cardboard — folds into a box. It holds 13 cards — one for each of the 12 Districts, plus one for the Capitol.

The front of each District card has that District’s symbol, and the particular products it is known for — and for which its Tributes are costumed to reflect when being presented in the Tribute parade.

The back has small photos of the District symbol, and of the boy and girl Tributes. It also includes a combination of details for each Tribute: name, height, gender, weapon, tribute rating, and whether they are a “Career” Tribute. The more prominent the character, the more details.

For the card of the Capitol, the front features the Capitol’s symbol, and back shows small photos of Seneca Crane and Coriolanus Snow, plus their titles and other character details.

Both front and back of the card give what was the Facebook address for The Hunger Games fan page, and the front also has the Lions Gate wordmark.

“Collectors Cards”

Set of 3 Oversized Cards

The set of promotional “Collectors Card” includes three oversized trading cards (3″ x 4.5″) of Katniss, Gale, and Peeta — one card per packet. These packets were issued as promotions before the March 23, 2012, release of the film in U.S. theatres.

UK “Collectors Cards”

Set of 8 Cards, HG-1 through HG-8

In the UK, there was a limited edition of eight promotional cards given out to promote the movie’s release, March 23, 2012. I do not have this set, so I do not know if these are standard size or oversized cards. An eBay auction posted the mylar foil packet (which looks like the one from the US) and sample cards.

The fronts feature a character in profile head-and-shoulders shot, with stark front lighting and darkness above and behind, along with the gold Mockingjay logo, character name, Hunger Games wordmark, and movie release date of March 23. The most unusual feature of these cards is that all the characters are facing right. Most of the time, we see only Katniss facing right and all other characters facing left.

The backs include a small square snapshot of the character, District or Capitol symbol, N.A.H.G. logo, card number, and character details: name, age, home, gender, and weapons (for Tributes) or occupation (for other characters). Cards are numbered HG-1 through HG-8.

NECA Premium Trading Cards

Set of 72, #1-72

This set of 72 standard-sized trading cards (2.5″ wide by 3.5″ tall) was packaged in boxes of 24 mylar foil packets, with six cards per packet. Cards were a random mix. There were no “chase cards” or autograph cards in this set.

• #1 – The Hunger Games (introduction card).
• #2-18 – Character Cards.
• #19-62 – Story Cards (photos from the movie).
• #63-72 – Poster Cards (#72 back has card checklist).

The packets have the Mockingjay pin with arrow and NECA logo and address on the front; and production information, NECA address, and Lions Gate copyright information on the back.

Limited Collector’s Edition Deluxe Soundtrack

Trading Cards

Set of 9, #73-81

The Limited Collector’s Edition deluxe soundtrack was subtitled, “Songs from District 12 and Beyond.” This set included The Hunger Games CD which unlocked a bonus downloadable song (“Lullaby”), a miniature poster, and a packet with NECA standard-sized trading cards, numbered #73-81.

The cards form a 9-card puzzle poster on each side.

• The front puzzle picture has a head shot of Katniss, looking straight ahead and ready to shoot an arrow. (This is the same image as the miniature poster included in this soundtrack edition.)
• The back shows the Avenue of the Tributes, with Katniss in her arena clothing and gear, looking down the Avenue past the multiple oversize screens of her on one side and Peeta on the other.

These cards were exclusive to this soundtrack edition, and were not available in other packs or sold separately.

“Only at Walmart” Trading Cards

Promotional Packet of 6

Each promotional packet included 6 of the 24 cards in the Walmart exclusive trading card set, #82-105. The packet wrapper has a small white band near the bottom right that says, “Only at Walmart” in light blue print, with the golden yellow six line Walmart logo mark to the right of the slogan. These cards were available at Walmart as a special premium for the midnight release of The Hunger Games DVD and Blu-ray on August 18, 2012.

According to advertisements and eBay auction descriptions at the time, 1 out of every 50 packs contained a card autographed by one of the stars. The front has The Hunger Games title wordmark, the character’s name and a large image, and District symbol in the background. The back has the character name and small image, short description of the character background and strengths, card number, NECA logo, and Lions Gate copyright line. Autograph cards were signed with silver Sharpie. Here is a partial list of the autograph cards, as showed up on eBay:
