Summary

  • Problem: phased dreaming on main did not yet have a good preview loop for REM candidate truths, and deep promotion replay could still duplicate durable entries on rerun.
  • Why it matters: we are close to shipping memory work, and we need a way to inspect what REM is surfacing before trusting it live while keeping MEMORY.md safe under retries.
  • What changed: added REM preview/candidate-truth output, openclaw memory rem-harness, openclaw memory promote-explain, and replay-safe deep promotion markers/dedupe.
  • What did NOT change (scope boundary): no Telegram review flow, no old pre-phase dreaming model, no broad heuristic/rule-based memory routing.

Change Type (select all)

  • Feature
  • Refactor required for the fix
  • Docs
  • Security hardening
  • Chore/infra

Scope (select all touched areas)

  • Gateway / orchestration
  • Skills / tool execution
  • Auth / tokens
  • Memory / storage
  • Integrations
  • API / contracts
  • UI / DX
  • CI/CD / infra

Linked Issue/PR

Root Cause (if applicable)

  • Root cause: phased dreaming had the architecture split, but it was still missing three practical surfaces: REM candidate-truth preview, explainability for deep promotion, and replay-safe durable writes.
  • Missing detection / guardrail: no dedicated harness/explain path for REM and no marker-based reconciliation in MEMORY.md.
  • Contributing context (if known): earlier branch work solved this against the old dreaming model, but that functionality had not yet been ported onto the new light/deep/rem structure.

Regression Test Plan (if applicable)

  • Coverage level that should have caught this:
    • Unit test
    • Seam / integration test
    • End-to-end test
    • Existing coverage already sufficient
  • Target test or file: extensions/memory-core/src/short-term-promotion.test.ts
  • Scenario the test should lock in: rerunning deep promotion after partial state loss should reconcile an existing MEMORY.md entry instead of appending a duplicate.
  • Why this is the smallest reliable guardrail: the failure mode is local to deep-promotion apply/replay behavior.
  • Existing test that already covers this (if any): none
  • If no new test is added, why not: N/A

User-visible / Behavior Changes

  • openclaw memory rem-harness previews current REM reflections plus possible lasting truths and deep candidates.
  • openclaw memory promote-explain <selector> explains why a deep candidate scores the way it does.
  • Deep promotion reruns reconcile previously written candidates instead of duplicating MEMORY.md entries.

Diagram (if applicable)

Before:
recent recalls -> REM phase writes reflection themes
recent recalls -> deep promotion appends durable entries
rerun after partial state loss -> duplicate durable entry possible

After:
recent recalls -> REM phase writes reflections + possible lasting truths
recent recalls -> rem-harness / promote-explain preview the pipeline
recent recalls -> deep promotion writes marker-backed durable entries
rerun after partial state loss -> existing durable entry is reconciled, not duplicated

Security Impact (required)

  • New permissions/capabilities? (No)
  • Secrets/tokens handling changed? (No)
  • New/changed network calls? (No)
  • Command/tool execution surface changed? (Yes)
  • Data access scope changed? (No)
  • If any Yes, explain risk + mitigation: adds local memory CLI commands only; no new remote execution path or broader access scope.

Repro + Verification

Environment

  • OS: macOS
  • Runtime/container: local dev worktree
  • Model/provider: N/A
  • Integration/channel (if any): memory-core CLI / dreaming
  • Relevant config (redacted): default memory-core experimental dreaming config

Steps

  1. Record short-term recall entries for daily memory notes.
  2. Run openclaw memory rem-harness --json and inspect REM reflections + possible lasting truths.
  3. Run openclaw memory promote --apply twice against the same candidate set.

Expected

  • REM preview shows reflections plus possible lasting truths.
  • Deep promotion appends once and reconciles on replay.

Actual

  • Matches expected on the targeted short-term-promotion / dreaming-command test surfaces.

Evidence

  • Failing test/log before + passing after
  • Trace/log snippets
  • Screenshot/recording
  • Perf numbers (if relevant)

Human Verification (required)

  • Verified scenarios: targeted serial runs for extensions/memory-core/src/short-term-promotion.test.ts and extensions/memory-core/src/dreaming-command.test.ts; manual inspection of the new CLI/help surfaces and replay-safe marker path.
  • Edge cases checked: duplicate replay after loss of promotedAt, zero-candidate harness output, selector-based explain output.
  • What you did not verify: extensions/memory-core/src/cli.test.ts is currently hanging in this fresh worktree even when isolating an older preexisting test, so that lane still needs follow-up.

Review Conversations

  • I replied to or resolved every bot review conversation I addressed in this PR.
  • I left unresolved only the conversations that still need reviewer or maintainer judgment.

Compatibility / Migration

  • Backward compatible? (Yes)
  • Config/env changes? (No)
  • Migration needed? (No)
  • If yes, exact upgrade steps:

Risks and Mitigations

  • Risk: REM candidate truths are still heuristic and may surface low-value warm-memory items.
    • Mitigation: keep this as preview/harness tooling plus REM-note output, not direct auto-promotion logic.
  • Risk: the CLI verification lane is not fully green yet.
    • Mitigation: PR is draft, and the known cli.test.ts hang is called out explicitly instead of being hidden.

P1 Badge Make rem-harness JSON test independent of wall clock

This test hard-codes nowMs to April 3, 2026, but runMemoryRemHarness computes its lookback cutoff from Date.now() (default REM lookback is 7 days), so after April 10, 2026 the seeded recall is filtered out and payload.rem.candidateTruths[0]/payload.deep.candidates[0] become undefined. That makes the test fail deterministically over time even when behavior is correct; freeze time or use a relative timestamp in the fixture.

P2 Badge Remove maxAge pre-filter from promote-explain candidate search

promote-explain is described as explaining why a candidate would or would not promote, but this ranking call still applies maxAgeDays, so over-age candidates are excluded before selector matching and users get "No promotion candidate matched" instead of an explanation that the max-age gate failed. This breaks debugging for stale entries; candidate lookup should include them and let the passes.maxAge check report the rejection.

Greptile Summary

Adds openclaw memory rem-harness and openclaw memory promote-explain preview commands, surfaces REM candidate truths alongside reflections during REM staging, and fixes a duplicate-entry bug in deep promotion replay by introducing marker-based reconciliation in MEMORY.md. The replay-safe dedup logic in applyShortTermPromotions is well-implemented and covered by a new regression test that simulates promotedAt state loss and verifies the second apply reconciles rather than appends.

Confidence Score: 5/5

Safe to merge; all findings are P2 style suggestions with no effect on correctness or runtime behavior.

No P0 or P1 issues found. The core replay-safe marker logic and REM preview pipeline are correctly implemented and well-tested by the new regression test.

No files require special attention.

P2 Non-deterministic evidence ordering in reflections

The entry.stat.evidence Set is populated by iterating entries in Object.values(store.entries) insertion order. When multiple store entries share a concept tag, evidence paths are emitted in an unspecified sequence that can vary if the store is rebuilt or entries are added in a different order — producing different phase-note content in MEMORY.md across otherwise equivalent runs.

Comment thread CHANGELOG.md

- Memory/dreaming (experimental): add weighted short-term recall promotion, a `/dreaming` command, Dreams UI, multilingual conceptual tagging, and doctor/status repair support, while refactoring dreaming from competing modes into three cooperative phases (light, deep, REM) with independent schedules and recovery behavior so durable memory promotion can run in the background with less manual setup. (#60569, #60697) Thanks @vignesh07.
- Memory/dreaming: add configurable aging controls (`recencyHalfLifeDays`, `maxAgeDays`) plus optional verbose logging so operators can tune recall decay and inspect promotion decisions more easily.
- Memory/dreaming: add REM preview tooling (`openclaw memory rem-harness`, `promote-explain`), surface possible lasting truths during REM staging, and make deep promotion replay-safe so reruns reconcile instead of duplicating `MEMORY.md` entries.

Add Amazon Bedrock as a native embedding provider for memory search.
Supports Titan Embed Text v1/v2 and Cohere Embed models via AWS SDK.

- New embeddings-bedrock.ts: BedrockRuntimeClient + InvokeModel
- Auth via AWS default credential chain (same as Bedrock inference)
- Auto-selected in 'auto' mode when AWS credentials are detected
- Titan V2: configurable dimensions (256/512/1024), normalization
- Cohere: native batch support with search_query/search_document types
- 16 new tests covering all model types, auth detection, edge cases

* feat(bedrock-mantle): add IAM credential auth via @aws/bedrock-token-generator

Mantle previously required a manually-created API key (AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK).
This adds automatic bearer token generation from IAM credentials using the
official @aws/bedrock-token-generator package.

Auth priority:
1. Explicit AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK env var (manual API key from Console)
2. IAM credentials via getTokenProvider() → Bearer token (instance roles,
SSO profiles, access keys, EKS IRSA, ECS task roles)

Token is cached in memory (1hr TTL, generated with 2hr validity) and in
process.env.AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK for downstream sync reads.

Falls back gracefully when package is not installed or credentials are
unavailable — Mantle provider simply not registered.

* chore(config): refresh streaming baseline hash

* docs(memory): add promote-explain and rem-harness CLI reference

* build: refresh pnpm lockfile

* fix: stop emitting post-background exec updates (openclaw#61627) (thanks @openperf)

* fix(exec ): stop emitting tool updates after session is backgrounded

When an exec session is backgrounded (background: true), the owning
agent run resolves its tool-call promise and may finish. The stdout
handler's emitUpdate() closure, however, kept invoking opts.onUpdate(),
delivering tool_execution_update events to a listener whose active run
had already ended. This surfaced as an unhandled rejection and crashed
the gateway process.

Guard emitUpdate() with a session.backgrounded || session.exited check
so that post-background output is still captured via appendOutput() but
no longer forwarded to the (now-stale) agent-loop callback.

Fixes openclaw#61592

* style: trim exec backgrounding comments

* fix: stop emitting post-background exec updates (openclaw#61627) (thanks @openperf)

* fix: place exec changelog entry at end of fixes (openclaw#61627) (thanks @openperf)

* feat(gateway): preserve session history on /new command

Backend changes for session sidebar feature:
- session.ts: create compound key entry for old session when /new triggered
- agent.ts: pass preserveHistory=true to session reset
- session-reset-service.ts: add file reuse optimization for preserved sessions
- types.ts: add previousSessionKey field to SessionEntry
- session-utils.ts: add compound key support in session key resolution

This enables the UI to show previous sessions in sidebar while
preserving complete chat history for archived sessions.
