Specifically, doc open runs the value through scaleBySize, as expected, but the event handler did not.

Switch the setting to a buttonprogress to allow using more_options in a less clunky fashion.

Also show the actual value in pixels in the long-press recap & notification.
This involved an extension of some helpers in optionsutil, and made me realize that I find showing these flex pixels as actual device pixels instead of mm/in much much much much more relevant, so, err, RFC to actually do something more involved on that front (expand the mm/in toggle to a mm/in/px tristate? Always show px in addition to mm/in?)

pagegap-buttonprogress

e.g.,

vs.

(In both cases, the input is a "koreader flex" pixel, unless I hallucinated something).

(The above screenshots were missing a default_pos, so just imagine the default square having a black border as expected ;p).

Real pixels sounds useful, yes. The trouble with Wayland and macOS is that you don't seem to get any, guaranteeing eternal blurriness.

My current line of thought would be to reword the Metric length entry in the Units section of the menu to read something like "Dimensions" instead, and to show a RadioButtonWidget with three choices: Metric/Imperial/Pixels

Somehow, as much as I can get one only speaks metric cm or english inches and rarely both, each population can also understand px. I guess I would be happy keep seeing both mm and px, and a bit sad having to choose only one of them.

It should be fairly easy to make that possible (and optional, even) with that refactor, lemme look into it ;).

Yup, neat and easy ;).

(Grayed out & ineffective if the selected display unit is already px).

To add to consistency, there should be a unit for the first value as well.

10 what? 10 units? 10 KOReader-scale units? 10 K-units? :D

10 KOReader-scale units

Correct, essentially that which would be 1 pixel on a 160 DPI screen, but typically it'll be something like twice the value on most newer devices.

I think we don't need to mention any unit for our abstract number font size.
It's like the volume on our TVs: we see a number on the screen, we soon get what that number means for us.

In case another sleep-deprived brain gets confused by the appended px values for font sizes in pt: remember that the DPI is not accurate on the emu, so the pt result will be bogus (as that depends on the ppi being accurate).

(well, all of it besides px requires an accurate dpi, actually).

Like the margins, but we show them in cm/in - so why not the footer height?

The variables being used for the margins here is pre-scaling, so they're still flex, not absolute pixels like the footer:

Will do. (It basically piggybacks on the unit and unit ~= "pt" -> use user setting check in optionsutil to mean "it's a dimension that isn't in pt, follow user settings")

…ng helper effectively

configdialog doesn't actually pass a unit argument to
name_text_hold_callback, so pull it instead from a new name_text_unit
field.

Expand said helper to support a "px" unit, which simply converts from
our arbitrary pixels to actual on-device pixels (e.g., a plain
scaleBySize).

Enable real_size_string usage when name_text_true_values is set
(it's a NOP in terms of the generated string if no unit is specified).
The input value should go through Screen:scaleBySize(), as in onReadSettings

Otherwise, choosing an option from ConfigDialog leads to different
results than on document open, as one is scaled, but not the other.

Issue extant since the inception of page gap configuration,
way back in koreader#5705

(The intended and correct behavior if of course to scale this, e.g., the
setting is a "koreader flex pixel", not an absolute actual px value ;).
We want to be able to set a custom value (i.e., more_options),
because on high-dpi devices, the scaling can lead to pretty large
differences; but more_options on a toggle is ugly and clunky.

So, switch to something more suited to what this actually sets,
which is ultimately an absolute pixel value, like margins.

Add a few more steps on the low end to fill out the bar (and because
that's where I found them most useful on high-dpi devices).
DRYer, simpler. Will make it easier to make "px" a real viable display
format.
Attempting to align the numbers on the same column was a fool's errand.
Our default UI font is not monospaced, to begin with,
and to do it right, we'd need to align the rightmost number, not the
leftmost ;).

i.e., T() would need to have much fancier justification capabilities ;).
Or, err, *any* text justification features, really ^^.
Don't mangle string input values when a unit was passed.
(i.e., keep displaying them as their actual string instead of as nil).

(e.g., when current is set to a number, but default is still unset,
which translates to "not set" in showValues).
Use the user-preferred display unit for dimensions.
Rename it to "Dimension units", and make it a radio submenu.

Migrate the previous metric_length setting to this new dimension_units
one.

Update optionsutil to follow it.
…ublic

Use it in the ReaderView:onPageGapUpdate notification, instead of
enforcing "px" there.
display a size unit

Rely on `name_text_unit` instead of wrapping `optionsutil.showValues`
Because that's what most people are probably thinking of.

But, more importantly, it's what *FreeType* assumes ;).
Instead of enforcing px.

Also decouple the footer from the bottom margin report to make things
clearer given this change.
Pull the dimension_units from in there,
instead of asking callers to do that.
Specifically, the whole unit interactions ;).
