It is duplicating stuff to put -g in for debug builds, that flag for GCC compilers should be put in by the relevant specs file for the debug builds (as is the -03 for the optimised release build). I found the -Wno-deprecated-declarations was required for building the (version 0.5.0) irc library, but perhaps they will go away if we source and include a later version (http://communi.github.io/ currently is at 3.2.0) though I do not recall whether -Wno-deprecated is a superset that include the more explicit existing flag.

Are you saying that we don't need -g since we've got QMAKE_CXXFLAGS_DEBUG?

Yep! (The -g -g I was getting during debug builds was what led me to investigate it..) You'll find it specified in the <QtBase>/gcc/mkspecs/linux-cxx/qmake.conf file.

That's one of the travis command lines for a release build. I don't know how to do a qmake debug build yet, though it can't be that hard.
The -O3 is what we add, the -O2 is the default, so it is needed. I suspect that the -g and the -O0 are not needed, however, I need to figure out how to test that.

Oh, and as far as communi goes, I have a change upgrading to version 1.2.1, I think, which was the most recent... like 3 years ago cause that's when I wrote it. It's on my list of things to get in.

I think that you can use, for instance, a "CONFIG -= -O2" to remove a flag ("-O2") that might already be present in the "default" set that the mkspecs files bring in. On Windows it actually defaults to having the "debug-and-release" entry in the CONFIG variable (running qmake then parses the project file three times which can be a bit confusing for messages that get generated thrice!) but only builds the last specified (release | debug) type unless "build_all" is also present - see the QMake manual in the QtCreator help, look for the help on qmake "Variables". I put in the -O0 to explicitly turn off any optimisation because I understand it makes it easier to debug the code if gdb doesn't have to step thorough code that has been rearranged by optimisations (though it does tend to make the executable larger).
