What is Self-control? Self-control means that you are managing your emotions by thinking before you act. Self-control includes staying calm, following the rules of the game, and accepting that mistakes are a part of the game.

Staying Calm

Keeping your cool and not getting angry if the referee makes a call you disagree with.

Managing Your Emotions and Actions

Not letting frustration or excitement cause you to act out, like yelling or arguing with another player.

Following the Rules

Playing by the rules and not cheating, even if you really want to win.

Being Patient

Waiting your turn and not interrupting or pushing others during practice or games.

Accepting Mistakes

Accepting the mistakes you make and trying to do better next time instead of getting upset.

Strategies to Help Improve Self-Control

STAR - Stop, Think, Anticipate, Respond

When something happens that frustrates you or makes you mad stop! Don’t respond until you stop and think first. Try to think about all of the possible actions that you can take in this situation. Next, anticipate or look into the future for each of the possible actions. What is the likely outcome of each action? Finally, respond in the best way.
The key is to stop and think before you act!

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Out of sight, out of mind, is a strategy to remove things from your immediate environment that create temptations you want to avoid. If video games or social media creates a distraction that prevents you from studying for a test or practicing your soccer moves, put your games or phone in a place you can’t see them…out of sight.

Future Self

Future self is a great strategy for looking into the future to see how actions have consequences later on. When you’re tempted to do something, ask yourself if your future self will be happy or mad at your decision.
