The short version:
A blog by someone not exactly human.
Why Elegant Ungulate? And what’s an ungulate anyway?
Elegance should be obvious. I will make no claim to being elegant, only that I make the attempt and on occasion might even succeed.
An ungulate is a hoofed (or hooved) mammal. The definition can get more fiddly if you like, but it generally all comes down to “hoofed mammal.” Yes, that leaves out dogs and cats and foxes and emus and spiders and robots and waffles. It includes horses and goats and deer and cattle and donkeys and… unicorns and centaurs and “minotaurs.” Moo.
It’s getting close to time to replace, as Dr. Boli puts it, the branch office of the company that makes the operating system for my ‘PC’. I’ve more than had it – I used to shake my head at my son, who many years ago built himself a UNIX box, because, while he was comfortable remembering all the Captain Midnight secret codes one entered on the command line to get istuff to happen, I certainly was not.
Now? Especially since rumor has it that there are perfectly useable LINUX UIs? I’m ready to tackle LINUX to get me the heck AWAY from the evil, evil people who, to use your recent example, disable the ‘-‘ search function. I sometimes used it when I don’t want Youtube to come up in my results – yep, doesn’t work any more. And the spying and trying to outsmart me all the time instead of doing what I tell it to do. And don’t even get me started on the ratzin’ fratzin’ Microsoft Office garbage we use at work.
Anyway – recommendations? Guidance of any kind?
Then build a Faraday Cage to stow all electronics in….

You might want to give Mint a try. It’s kinda Ubuntu but with most of the sharp edges ground down a bit. I use the Xfce desktop version, but I’m used to it. You might find MATE or Cinnamon versions more to your liking. You can try with a “live” (non installed the HD) version.
Or look through https://distrowatch.com/ and see what looks like it might work for you.
Best wishes.
