U17 Team
All athletes with no competitive racing experience begin by trying out for the U17 Competitive Program. U17 athletes train and work toward individual and team goals throughout the year.
The U17 boys’ and girls’ teams practice year-round, with short breaks between seasons. Athletes compete in local and national regattas, including the Head Of The Charles and Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
After completing a year, athletes may try out for the U19 team. If athletes cannot attend all 6 practices a week, they may be placed on the Development team, which includes fewer on-water sessions per week and focuses on developing fitness, athleticism, and rowing technique to fuel success.
Please reach Boys’ U17 Head Coach Chelsea Foster or Girls’ U17 Head Coach Grace Murdock with any questions.
Prerequisite: No rowing experience is required. Good athletes make great rowers!
Gender Policy: Per CRI’s policies, athletes participate in rowing practices with the team (Boys’ or Girls’) that best matches their expressed gender identity. This is regardless of the gender listed on the athlete’s birth certificate or student records, and regardless of whether the athlete has undergone any medical treatment. However, per USRowing policies, Girls’ competitive events (races or regattas), are limited to athletes who were assigned a sex at birth of female. If you have questions, please reach Ted Benford, Executive Director.
Parent Handbook: Additional information about our youth competitive programs can be found here.
CRI offers the Row Boston Scholars (RBS) program to financially support high school students from Boston and Cambridge public schools to participate in whichever program best meets their experience and commitment level.
To apply to be a Row Boston Scholar, please register for the youth rowing class that’s most appropriate for you and fill out the financial aid application at the end of registration. RBS applicants are not charged for the class while applying for aid. RBS applications must be renewed each year as part of the overall registration process.
