D.O.E. to recycle nuclear waste into consumer products.

Put this in the unbelievable column. I have researched this extensively. This must be the hoax of the century. Please tell me I am wrong about this. So this is Secretary Chu’s farewell gift to us? All that talk about saving our environment and keeping Mother Earth safe and sound? But wait, in 2000 Energy Secretary Richardson tried to do this once before. It gives new meaning to Obama and his so called “all of the above” plan regarding energy.

In an article entitled “Nuclear weapons waste in your hip replacement?”, John LaForge of Nukewatch reports, U.S. Representative Ed Markey (D-MA) — who is now running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by John Kerry as he becomes Secretary of State — has sent a strongly worded letter to Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, expressing opposition to the so-called “recycling” scheme. The full letter can be found HERE.

DOE made the proposal to rescind its earlier moratorium on radioactive scrap metal recycling in December, 2012.

The letter notes that in 2000, then-Energy Secretary Bill Richardson first suspended DOE’s radioactive recycling efforts in response to concerns raised by Rep. Markey and others that DOE would not be able to assure public safety as radioactively contaminated metals could have been turned into everything from baby spoons to jewelry to medical devices that are implanted into the human body

Rep. Markey serves as Ranking Member of the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee, and as a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

On Jan. 11th, Markey wrote to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu — and his office issued a press release — expressing deep concerns and asking pointed questions about the U.S. Department of Energy’s proposals to “recycle” large quantities of radioactive scrap metal into consumer products.

On Jan. 14th, Rep. Markey again wrote Secretary Chu, questioning the wisdom of DOE’s dirty, dangerous, and expensive proposal to “recycle” surplus weapons plutonium into MOX (Mixed-Oxide, uranium-plutonium) reactor fuel.

The proposal follows an incident from 2012 involving Bed, Bath & Beyond stores in America recalling tissue holders made in India that were contaminated with the radio-isotope cobalt-60. Those products were shipped to 200 stores in 20 states. In response to that incident, a Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesperson advised members of the public to return the products even though the amount of contamination was not considered to be a health risk.

“The public concerns associated with such a proposal cannot be understated,” writes Rep. Markey to Secretary Chu. “If these metals are being released to companies who will subsequently manufacture new consumer products from them, DOE simply has no way to ensure that different samples are not aggregated into more highly radioactive products.”

On a vital radioactive waste battlefront, NIRS has put out an alert against a scheme to “recycle” vast quantities of radioactive metal from across the nuclear weapons complex into the consumer product recycling stream.

NIRS asks, “Will the next zipper on your pants be radioactive? How about your silverware?”, and explains:

“The Department of Energy wants to mix radioactive metal from nuclear weapons factories with clean recycled metal and let it enter into general commerce–where it could be used for any purpose.

It’s a foot in the door for revival of a vast–and discredited–radioactive waste deregulation plan defeated in 1992.

Barton supports Chu at Solyndra Hearing, Hearing a dud

I watched most of the hearing on the Solyndra, and in my mind, the hearing was a bust. A few choice words to posture and to look good, but a sinking feeling that this Committee is not up to the job. I will pick out two Republicans that are more than happy to give Chu a pass.  Hot Air has a more reasoned analysis of the hearing. Wander there for a bit of a different take.

Every now and then, a Congressman gets on a blogger’s nerve and one feels compelled to follow him as he walks down the leftard path. Supposedly a Republican, I could never conceive that Boehner would appoint Upton to Chair the Energy and Commerce Committee. This is the man that brought us the Light Bulb ban. Now the new wrinkle? Here are a couple of questions and comments:

“Based on what you know and what’s happened, who has to apologize” for Solyndra? Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) asked Chu

It is extremely unfortunate what has happened to Solyndra,” Chu replied, adding, “Was there incompetence? Was there any undue influence? I’d have to say no.”

“So no apology?” Upton followed up. Is that what we are asking for? An apology?

“It’s extremely unfortunate what has happened to Solyndra. You and I both feel the same,” Chu said, adding that the price drops for solar panels caught DOE and others off guard. “This company and several others got caught in a very, very bad tsunami,” he said.

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) said he believes the Obama administration may be trying to throw Chu under the bus.

“I do think you’re a man of integrity. I think you’re trying to do your job as best that as you can. I also happen to believe that it’s possible you’re being set up to be the fall guy,” Barton said.
To back up his assertion, Barton cited an email released last week from Dan Carol, the research director of the 2008 Obama campaign, to White House counselor Pete Rouse, suggesting a DOE shakeup that included removing Chu. Read more at Politico and for a reminder of Fred, I include the following earlier posts:

The Ligntbulb Ban- One great reason Fred Upton should never lead a House Committee and

GOP picks Fred Upton for Super Congress- we are screwed

  • Upton was one of only 38 House Republicans to support the Democrats’ Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 that removed millions of acres of federal lands from oil and gas leasing, thus driving up energy costs for consumers.
  • Upton was one of only 20 Republicans to vote against an amendment that would have reduced the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2010 funding to 2008 levels.
  • Upton teamed up with Democrat Jane Harman to pass an invasive energy bill which mandates that only politically-favored “environmentally-friendly” light bulbs be used. That’s right, this guy thinks the Constitution gives him the power to tell you which light bulb you can use.

Obama friends got 80% of DOE Green Energy Loans

We can only hope Mr.Chu makes it to the hearing on Capital Hill regarding the nonsense that has been going on in his fiefdom and he will have an explantion. Billions going out the door in “bad bets” as stated by Obama. For sure, let this item come up for review. Bye bye Nobel Prize winner, time to exit stage left.

A new book by Hoover Institution fellow Peter Schweizer details the startling extent of the cronyism that has pervaded President Obama’s “green jobs” push. According to Schweizer,4 out of every 5 renewable energy companies backed by the Energy Department was “run by or primarily owned by Obama financial backers.”H/T:Expose Obama

Hot Air has a great update on the story and links to an interview with Chu- you will laugh yourself silly:

Via William Amos, a sneak preview of what Chu’s planning to tell Congress on Thursday. My favorite part is when he claims that no one at his level was aware of the political affiliations of Solyndra’s backers, even though we now know from e-mails written by George Kaiser himself that Kaiser talked to people in the White House about Solyndra.

Doug Ross spotted the relevant excerpt of Schweizer’s book

When President-elect Obama came to Washington in late 2008,he was outspoken about the need for an economic stimulus to revive a struggling economy… After he was sworn in as president,he proclaimed that taxpayer money would assuredly not be doled out to political friends…

…But an examination of grants and guaranteed loans offered by just one stimulus program run by the Department of Energy, for alternative-energy projects,is stunning. The so-called 1705 Loan Guarantee Program and the 1603 Grant Program channeled billions of dollars to all sorts of energy companies…

…In the 1705 government-backed-loan program [alone],for example, $16.4 billion of the $20.5 billion in loans granted as of Sept. 15 went to companies either run by or primarily owned by Obama financial backers—individuals who were bundlers, members of Obama’s National Finance Committee,or large donors to the Democratic Party. The grant and guaranteed-loan recipients were early backers of Obama before he ran for president, people who continued to give to his campaigns and exclusively to the Democratic Party in the years leading up to 2008. Their political largesse is probably the best investment they ever made in alternative energy. It brought them returns many times over….

Gas prices under Obama. And just the start.

But he did keep this one promise: “Under my plan, electricity prices will skyrocket”. He just shut down the largest coal mining operation in the United States:  Story here

Gas? On track with this as well. Ms Piven should be pleased.
Barack Obama attacked the oil industry and promised 5 million new energy jobs. They do think we are fools.

Now, 24 months into his term, gas prices are up 55%.
Government-funded solar companies are moving to China.

Post from Heritage:

And 4.4 million people lost their jobs in 2009. That’s the most job losses in a year since 1940.

Fact: President Barack Obama’s Energy Secretary Steven Chu wants to “figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” At the time he made the statement, gas cost $7 – $8 a gallon in Europe.
Fact: Since taking office, President Obama’s entire energy agenda has made a gallon of gas more expensive:

Noble Prize Kickass Chu says BP Going to help Save the World

Robert Reich says goverment should take over BP

Was I the only one watching Meet the Press On Sunday? Carol Browner White House Energy Adviser said specifically that it was  Energy Secretary Chu, who called a halt to what BP was attempting- “Top Kill” -because the “Nobel prize” winner was worried maybe too much pressure in the line was building. I thought it was huge, but nary a word on the blogs. Hey, someone spring for a transcript and prove me a liar!!! And Communist Reich says we should take over BP? Looks like we have. Hey Zerro is in charge—from day one.

It’s time for the federal government to put BP under temporary receivership, which gives the government authority to take over BP’s operations in the Gulf of Mexico until the gusher is stopped. This is the only way the public know what’s going on, be confident enough resources are being put to stopping the gusher, ensure BP’s strategy is correct, know the government has enough clout to force BP to use a different one if necessary, and be sure the President is ultimately in charge.

If the government can take over giant global insurer AIG and the auto giant General Motors and replace their CEOs, in order to keep them financially solvent, it should be able to put BP’s north American operations into temporary receivership in order to stop one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. http://robertreich.org/post/650145579/why-obama-should-put-bp-under-temporary-receivership

Uncle B's Rice

When dear leader is done with banks, cars, newspapers, healthcare,  school loans etc….he’ll be checking appliances like his idol:

“The Cuban government has purchased 2 million of the small cookers for distribution to Cuban families, many of whom heat rice with kerosene stoves.

Lee Adams, the chairman of the USA Rice Federation, told Castro he admired the efforts the Cuban president was making. “I find myself thinking about how much the United States could save if our president was looking at the shape of the bottoms of appliances,” he noted.”

“By December, every Cuban will be receiving another kilogram (2.2 pounds) of rice per month at subsidized prices.”

ComradeMatrix is wondering if the rice makers come in Bunkerville colors.
