Welcome to the Second Oscar History Challenge, a challenge I designed in order to bring some love to one of my favorite things to hate in cinema, the Academy Awards. The first one had quite a few participants and I personally enjoyed doing it, so here comes round two! As I said last time, the Oscars certainly deserve the flack they get, and this year was no exception, but despite that, it is an icon of cinema that deserves respect as well for being an interesting lens to view the history of culture.
As for the rules:
1. Please tag the lists and reviews with either "oscars history challenge 2023" or "ohc23".

2. The films must have been nominated for Oscars. Being shortlisted doesn't count. They can be nominated in any category, including if they won any Honorary Awards, unless the criteria specifically names a category.
3. If the criteria says "features an Oscar nominated person", it means they had to have been nominated for that film.
4. The films can be watched in any order.
5. The films do not have to be first time watches but the more first time watches, the better!

This challenge took from January 6, 2023 to October 30, 2023. The average score I gave for this challenge was a 3.7
The biggest surprise was Phantom of the Paradise. I love Brian de Palma but I wasn't expecting this truly bizarre sounding film to be by far his best, his absolute masterpiece. But that's definitely what it was. A wild and spectacular ride. The biggest disappointment was Life Animated. I always go into these films hoping for good representation and that's never what I get. I don't know why I even bother getting my hopes up anymore when they inevitably lead to bitter disappointment, just as this one did.
Top Three:
1. No Way Out
2. Titus
3. Phantom of the Paradise
Bottom Three:
1. War and Peace
2. Life Animated
3. Carmen
Other Superlatives:
Best Performances: Sidney Poitier in No Way Out/Kate Winslet in Heavenly Creatures
Worst Performances:Â Audrey Hepburn in War and Peace/George Bancroft in Thunderbolt
Most Beautiful: Legend
Most Thought-Provoking:Â A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Made Me Cry: The Children's Hour
Most Fun: The Mask of Zorro
