Remaking the Gold: Remakes at the Oscars

Remakes tend to be seen as worse than the originals, with good reason. But occasionally, there are some remakes that have been considered good enough to receive Oscar attention. These are the remakes that have been nominated for Oscars.

I will not be including films that are based off the same story, since this is more of a gray area. For example, while there have been various Romeo and Juliet films nominated for various Oscars, to what extent can it be said that they influenced each other to the point that they are remakes of each other rather than simply different adaptations of the same story? So, if the two films are based off the same existing material, then they will not be included.

Only four remakes have ever been nominated for Best Picture. Two of them won:
- The Departed (won)
- A Star is Born
- CODA (won)
- Bugonia
