Residential School for the Children with Visual impairment

In Bangladesh, roughly, according to UNICEF & BBS survey, 60 per cent of children with disabilities aged 5-17 years are not in education. There are approximately 40,000 children in Bangladesh who are blind, and around 1.5 million who have low vision, and about 70% blind & visually impaired children are not in education. The cost of disabilities in Bangladesh has been estimated at US$ 1.18 Billion per year which is about 1.74% Bangladesh GDP. That is why, to meet SDG, BERDO has been working for inclusive education and promotion of special education for visually impaired children and Children with disabilities as well in Bangladesh.

To promote education for blind children, BERDO has been running a Residential School for the Children with Visual impairment since 2006. This school provides full free education to 60 blind students on Braille version. BERDO bears all their cost (60 blind student) that includes cost for accommodation, Food, Books, Health services etc. Different donors and sponsors has been providing this fund. BERDO can increase enrolment of more blind student if sufficient fund is managed. The student can contribute to national productivity. But yet many blind children have remain unserved. A girls hostel for the visual impaired will be establish in the near future.
