International Cooperation for Disability Inclusion and Rehabilitation in Bangladesh

BERDO has been working with BRAC to implement this project as partner by running two shifts of 10 schools under sub component 2.5 of Out of School Children Program of Bureau of Non-formal Education of Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. There are 320 females and 280 males learners in the two shifts. There are ten teachers and one supervisor to operate the program smoothly. Books, Khata, School Dress, Bag, Pencil, eraser, colour pencils and other learning material are distributed to all learners free of cost. Stipends for all learners have been ensured. Proper learning environment has been ensured at all learning centers so that learners can get appropriate environment for learning. Learners participate in CLUB day on every Thursday. They participate in different extra curriculum activities like drawings, painting, dancing, singing songs, recitation from poetry and other recreational activities. Regular guardian meetings and CMC (Center Management Committee) meetings are organized to ensure quality of education. Besides, Refreshers training are also organized in each month to increase teacher’s skill.

BERDO has been implementing a project titles Digital Entrepreneurship & Innovation Eco-System Development (DEIED). The project is being supported by the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority under the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and finance by the World Bank .So far, a total of 10 batches in 5 courses have been conducted in 8 divisions of Bangladesh. A total of 200 trainees have been imparted training on five subjects viz Content Writing, Entrepreneurship, Customer Care, Management, Creative Design, and Digital Marketing. After completing training, BERDO will provide their employment.

BERDO maintains Database of prospective employers and works as liaison officer between employers and PWDs candidates. BERDO supported PWDs in respect of communication and information with employers and application process. So far, BERDO have supported 400 PWDs landing jobs and they are now leading decent lives.

BERDO also helps persons with disability to finds job and encourages to creat self employment.

BERDO has been implemented a two month project on disability rights with funding from CBM Global Bangladesh Disability Inclusion. This project provided legal and awareness training to 45 OPD leaders. Three awareness workshops on disability were held at the local level in three districts, Dhaka, Gazipur, Barishal. A total of 150 participants including 30 journalists, government and non-government officers, Persons with disabilities, teachers, dignitaries and businessman participated in this event.

 A national-level workshop was held in Dhaka. Senior officers of the Ministry, Officers of the various departments, local- level newspaper, national-level newspapers, electronic media, teachers, persons with disabilities, representatives of non governmental organizations, members of the Executive bodies and General bodies and officers of BERDO participated in it. 

1000 copies of the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act-2013 were published and distributed and 100 copies of the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act-2013 were brailed and distributed among Persons with Disabilities.

BERDO has a well equipped Braille Library with a host of talking books, Compact Disc (CD) and a lot of Braille books. All materials are available for study of the persons with visual impairment. A recording studio is also available in Braille Library for producing need based talking books. At present, 565 Braille books, 300 talking books are available in the library. Total number of beneficiaries are 361. Each day about 15 to 20 blind students come to library for study. BERDO has been striving to develop this library to meet growing demand of Visually impaired students.
To meet growing demand of Braille books, BERDO has procured a most modern high speed Braille Press from Norway. This production center produces Braille books (readable by touching) of different nature and supply Braille books as per need of different organizations. This center is capable to meet all demand of braille Books in Bangladesh. As of now, BERDO has 7 Braille printers and one high speed modern Braille Press. This center has produced 1548 Braille books in 2025. Until 2025, BERDO has successfully produced many Braille Books and distributed among 15118 students with visual impairment across Bangladesh for their study.
BERDO is actively involved in community based rehabilitation for the Persons with Disabilities with following strategy i.e. Community Counselling, training in mobility and daily living skills, facilitating access to loan, community awareness-raising, formation of local self-help group, parents groups and Disable Persons Organizations (DPOs), facilitating contact with different authorities, facilitating school enrolment. Right now, there are 8 groups of Dhaka, 10 groups at Tongi, 8 groups at Barisal, 8 groups at Banariparpa and 8 groups of Gazipur total 40 groups are functional in these areas. Their leadership and organizational development have occurred.
