BLIND EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION (BERDO) is a national level OPD (Organization of Persons with Disabilities) that came into being in 1991 in response to address the Persons with Disabilities in Bangladesh.   

In Bangladesh, there are 16 million people living with different form of disabilities. Their rights are often denied, violated that force them to exclusion. The economic value of such exclusion is enormous.   It is a tremendous public health concern worldwide. 

Disability significantly impedes financial contribution. This lack of participation tends to reduce economic output from a person with disabilities. The cost of disability is measured by calculating the net economic value of impairment.  In Bangladesh, the estimated financial cost of disability is 1.18 billion per year, and as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), it is 1.74%. Bangladesh cannot achieve Sustainable Development Goals by leaving behind these persons with disabilities. .   

Along with Public initiatives, private institutions, organizations, NGOs and CSRs are playing pivotal role through different interventions like education, rehabilitation, skill development, employment and leadership development of PWDs in Bangladesh.  Among them, BERDO has in addition to program interventions been supporting PWDs through running a Residential School for Blind Children with free Braille education. BERDO has been running an Eye Hospital to provide Eye care Services at affordable cost. In addition to primary care services. This hospital is contributing in tackling blindness as well by affordable cataract surgeries. 

In addition, BERDO is contributing in Human Resource development to a accelerate productivity. The organization runs a Computer and ICT training program for both PWDs, visually impaired youths and community people as well. BERDO has set up a modern Braille Books production centre for promotion of Braille education for Blind and visually impaired children.

BERDO has also been working for job placement activity.   

The organization has also been working for Policy level advocacy for Policy reforms and community awareness building for full implementation of different legal frameworks to protect rights of PWDs
