A guide to talking about maths

Why language matters
The words we use to talk about maths are incredibly important.
We and our partners* conducted a study to understand what motivates high-attaining KS3 pupils (Years 7–9), and used what we learned to create a messaging guide.
It exists to help teachers, mentors, partners and families use language that strengthens pupils’ identity as mathematicians, deepens motivation and enjoyment, supports confidence as challenge and pressure increase and keeps ambition alive beyond GCSE.
What the research tells us
- High attainers value challenge and recognise their ability but don’t always describe maths as “fun”
- Some begin to disengage as pressure increases
- The right language can make a meaningful difference in how they see themselves as mathematicians
How to use this guide
Use it as a shared reference so that pupils hear consistent messages across school, mentoring and home.
- Pick one or two phrases to try this week
- Share with colleagues and anyone who works with young mathematicians
- Use a phrase to start a conversation
