What a world what a world

It has been a week.  On Monday I got a bill for medical supplies the insurance didn’t pay for.  Then Tuesday I got food poisoning and stayed in bed all day Wednesday after a night on white porcelain.  Then Thursday I had a blood draw only to come out to a dead car battery.  Thank goodness for AAA.

I am afraid to say what else could happen.  On a high note it is pride weekend in Cat City.  Truly a maller event as these things go but it is the first of the season.  A few goings on in front of city hall and a celebration at Agua Caliente on Sunday as they sponsor the infamous bed races.  It should be a good time.

Here is a shot from a previous year.

Oh and David Archuleta is headlining a show on Saturday. He is a former American Idol contestant who came out recently to the chagrin of his Mormon family.

Oh David!  (Not the one from HGTV.)

Side note, after several phone calls I think I got the insurance payment straightened out. It was “a billing error.”

Gay Pride festival in Palm Springs

Quite the crowd

This guy was charging for pictures.  But I cheated. Oh the shame. A lady called out to me wanting payment.  She didn’t get it.

There were several stages with DJs but it was too hot and sunny for much dancing. I am sure they will be out there tonight.

Cute dog. They looked at me after the shot, darn it. My phone was already locked.

It was a nice day for walking about. But 93° is a little much in full sun.  We stayed in the shade as much as possible.  Tomorrow morning is the parade.  I will post more photos after.

We have pride in November because it is unbearable here in June with temperatures in the triple digits, some as high as 120°.  Old people, which is most of our population, would be dropping like flies.

I found a way to lose weight in a picture at least

I was playing with meta AI and generated these pictures of me celebrating pride. Some are pretty funny.

OMG! Who said disco was dead?
Looks like a love festival from the 60’s.
Palm Springs baby!
I could make this shirt.
Love the hat. So French.
I told it to give me muscles and wear a Speedo….. 😂
This looks like leather pride. I do not own a harness.  Hmmm maybe I need one.

Pride

We have just finished Gay Pride week here in the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs has become a true gay mecca with one of the largest celebrations on the West coast. Nearly 200,000 give or take 50,000 depending on your sources.  We do it the first weekend in November following our Leather Pride.  I know traditionally June is pride month, but here the summer is much too hot and people won’t come out to the desert.

This year it was odd, with the election looming. It is hard to feel pride when you’re worried about the state of our democracy and our freedom in general. Some are contemplating moving away, not just from the desert but out of the country.

We went downtown to check out the Halloween party on Thursday. But Ricky wasn’t up to it so we went home after barely getting parked and walking several blocks to Arenas, the center of everything.

The rest of the parties were pool parties and drink fests which we were going to attend at least one but the crowd scared us away. Maybe next year.

Pride day at work

I made masks out of rainbow fabric for me and 3 coworkers. The rainbow was too big to get all the colors in but they turned out ok.

On the table.
The fabric.
On the face. Just me. Don’t have permission to show my coworkers. They are reversible.

Happy Pride Day!

Pride

Pride month begins tomorrow. It is a time to reflect on how far the LBGTI community has come. It is a time to look at some of the recent setbacks and our path forward. But mostly it is a time of celebration, a time to celebrate who we are and the differences that make us the same.

This weekend here in Reno kicks off with a Pride (beer) Crawl. As you can imagine there aren’t that many exclusively gay establishments in town. But we have great support from community bars that are participating in the event as well as casinos and shops around the downtown and midtown areas. I am surprised how many people both straight and gay turn out for our Pride events.

If you are from a big coastal city like L.A. , New York or San Francisco these events seem old hat. But here in what once was the far right regions of Nevada it is an event that has taken a long time to build momentum. Sure there are still haters here as there are all across the country, but we have supporters too. That is what makes it so amazing. During these events we are free to be ourselves and enjoy the company of others without concern for their sexual identity. We are one.

As I approach the golden age of 60, I look back at my first Pride event in West Hollywood. I was maybe 20 years of age. People came for the spectacle. I came to be with people like me. I came to end some of the loneliness of living in a straight world. And, of course, if I could hook up with someone so much the better.

Now I am married. I see these events as an affirmation of normality. I enjoy the exuberant young people and hope they appreciate the freedoms bestowed upon them through the efforts of past generations. I can’t forget where we came from and I can see how easily these freedoms could slip away.

So, celebrate the month of June. Have pride and be proud of who you are and what we have as a community. Never forget how precious these freedoms are and what price we have paid and will continue to pay for the respect of others.
