Regulatory principles

Public interest: The purpose of regulating engineering and applied science professionals is to minimize and mitigate risks and maximize the benefits to the public, workplace and environment that may arise in the context of practice in the profession. It is ASTTBC’s core mandate to ensure that its work is focused on promoting public interest by working towards public safety and the management of workplace risk. As a trusted regulator, ASTTBC operates with honesty, dedication, ethics, and fairness by doing the right thing every time, for the protection of the public.

Risk-based regulation: ASTTBC has embraced what is known as right-touch regulation, which considers both the cost of compliance and the intended results. ASTTBC’s actions are proportionate to the level of risk posed, applying only the minimum regulatory force necessary to achieve the desired results.

Professional ethics and accountability: The development of a publicly focused regulatory mandate and the designation of reserved practice underscores the importance of appropriate education, training, skills and where required, supervision. This creates ethical responsibilities, and a strong professional identity rooted in accountability. It is important that all engineering and applied science technologists and technicians in BC are aware of the regulations, laws, practice standards and professional codes of conduct and ethics that guide their work. By upholding these standards, technology professionals play a key role in developing and maintaining the complex systems and infrastructure that support communities across the province.

Evidence-based decision making: ASTTBC continues to improve its regulatory and governance processes in a sustainable manner with clear, measurable outcomes. The organization is committed to pursuing and applying information to inform decisions, identifying trends and establishing performance measures that support alignment with the OSPG’s Standards of Good Regulation. Through this, ASTTBC evaluates and optimizes its work to better serve the public interest.
