Daily writing prompt
Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.
It was April 1989. I was living with my brother and his family, holding down two jobs, and just keeping my head above water owing tens of thousands of pounds following a failed relationship of almost eight years.
I was lucky Bro was able to take me and Kizzy in.
I was out of work for two days, landed a job with the bank and a friend from years ago told me about an evening job at the dog track three times a week which was sufficient to keep my car on the road.
I was done with men, romance and all the lies that went with it. But I needed a friend.
Everyone I knew before I’d moved away had families and we had nothing in common.
Cue an advert in the local weekly paper for someone looking for a friend, someone to share walks with, maybe a meal out, go to the pictures, just company.
I answered.
Was that the risk?
Partly.
Having received a reply, I responded, which resulted in a phone call and an arranged meeting at a local pub.
Was that the risk?
Probably.
I smoked two cigarettes sitting on the wall outside gathering my courage to go in.
Just when I made up my mind, I saw this guy coming out and walking towards the car I’d been given
the registration number of.
‘So that heap’s yours is it?’
I insulted the man’s car!
But he still wanted to share a drink with me.
That was May 10th 1989 and we celebrate our coral wedding anniversary on May 10th this year.
