- We’ve all heard the ugly things three of my colleagues said on the infamous tapes. It is also important to remember what they did. The legislation they killed, stalled or weakened. The laws and programs they stopped that would've helped people. The bad policies they passed. 🧵
- Walmart is a big backer of Prop 36, the mass incarceration initiative. If Walmart execs think prison is the appropriate punishment for stealing a tube of toothpaste, why shouldn’t they do hard time for illegally dumping 400 tons of hazardous waste? As part of a settlement agreement, the retail giant admits it dumped nearly 400 tons of hazardous waste into California’s landfills between 2016-21. 4.nbcla.com/SCM7dmS
- In a cruel and petulant move, Uber just announced they are shutting down service in California on Thursday. Faced with a mandate to treat their workers fairly, they opted instead to leave them unemployed — in the middle of a pandemic and a recession.
- I am proud to endorse @BernieSanders for president and I am excited to be a part of an inspiring grassroots movement for positive change!NEWS: LA City Councilmember @mikebonin endorses @BernieSanders, saying: “We desperately need big, substantive, systemic change. We need bold and empowering leadership. That’s why I’m proud to join this grassroots movement.”
- Congratulations and welcome to City Council, @nithyavraman! This victory is a progressive earthquake and a transformative moment. I’m excited for the work we can do together to move Los Angeles forward. Huge props to the unprecedented grassroots movement that made this happen.
- The LA Times is calling for Nury Martinez, Kevin de León, and Gil Cedillo to resign. They must. So must labor chief Ron Herrera. That’s where the accountability and healing Los Angeles desperately needs and deserves will begin. latimes.com/opinion/story/…
- Kevin de León spoke to CNN this week, offering “context” to his comments about my son, claiming they were “much more nuanced” than has been reported. Here’s some context that has gone unnoticed: KDL is the one who brought my son into the damn conversation.
- This could be the dawn of a powerful progressive moment in Los Angeles. LA voters have given a huge boost to insurgent, progressive candidates, creating upsets that have rocked the political establishment.
- Nury Martinez, Kevin de Leon, Gil Cedillo: Governance of this beautiful city is untenable as long as you are on the council. Healing is impossible as long as you remain in office. Resign. Now.
- It’s been 6 days since we learned of the ugly, racist things Martinez, Herrera, De Leon and Cedillo said. De Leon’s and Cedillo’s refusal to resign is another deep wound they’re inflicting on us all. Let Los Angeles heal. Resign today.
- Vile racist Kevin de León just showed up for council. I walked out, as did @mhdcd8 and @nithyavraman. He needs to resign.
- Still trying to process the past 2 days, but I know people are jockeying for council prez. My thoughts: We shouldn’t vote for anyone who didn’t call for resignations. And if they refuse to resign, anyone elected with those 3 votes is associating themselves with this disgrace.
- It's appalling when candidates pretend we could end homelessness if we just had more laws against homelessness.
