I just received another batch of unhinged NIMBY emails that were sent to the Pittsburgh Planning Commission demanding that the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon downsize their student populations. How could people be so callous to the children of our Commonwealth?

Penn State students are holding a candlelight vigil outside of the McDonalds in downtown State College because it closed. A high rise will be built in this spot & previous reports indicate a McDonalds will be in the high rise. Chants of “fu— your high rise” have broken out

The State College Borough Council is currently hearing about the comprehensive zoning reform that's supposed to happen next year. They are proposing to DOWNZONE an existing mid-rise parcel to ensure that students can't live there. In a college town. Near a college campus.

Dr. Jamil Bey, Pittsburgh City Planning Director, doesn't believe that housing abundance will drive prices down. Calls it "trickle-down." It's absurd for the leader of a city planning department to deny empirical reality!

A supermajority of households that would move into new apartments in Pittsburgh (or State College, or Philadelphia) would probably vote Democratic. If these places built commensurate to demand, Pennsylvania would probably be back to solid blue. And yet!

My hometown in southeastern Pennsylvania wanted to rid itself of renters. So did the borough of State College where I studied. Now I’m in Pittsburgh and I *still* hear people complain that renters aren’t real people. My worth to society is not determined by whether I own land.

The neighbors would say yes. The lot is better than a 100 plus unit building of renters who don’t always treat long term and older residents well.

People dunking on this have clearly never talked to a normie about taking public transit. The most common reason I’ve heard for why they don’t use it is because of disorder, full stop.

How many people who could take SEPTA don't because of "disorder" on an average day? 100,000? 200,000? The tens of millions in lost revenue and the additional congestion and traffic deaths are all downstream of this "harmless" choice to mandate compassion for riders.

We watched this on repeat in the South Side. People blowing through a stop sign in front of a busy playground, park, city pool, and library. Local moms tell @KDKA they are fed up.
