So proud of my son Charlie, who at 21 years old has just qualified from his apprenticeship as a furniture maker with full distinctions! The shirt says it all!

Very sad news - Tony Soper, a huge influence on generations of birders and broadcasters, who I had the huge privilege of working with and getting to know, has died aged 95. The last person who was there at the start of the BBC Natural History Unit. A lovely man.

The worst environment secretary ever (and that takes some doing!) has resigned. Good riddance @theresecoffey - you were utterly useless, and according to one leading conservationist who met you, the rudest and most uninterested politician they had ever met.

A very happy 80th birthday to my dear friend and colleague, the incomparable genius @BillOddie Please RT and send Bill your very best wishes; after a tough year he is back, as he says, "I have risen again!" Have a great day Bill... @ChrisGPackham @IoloWilliams2 @DilgerTV 1/3

My late mother Kay, a single parent who left school at 15 and was never given the chance to go to university, always wanted me to be a doctor. Not sure this is what she had in mind, but I think she would have been proud. I owe it all to her love and guidance. Thanks, mum.

Just to say I’ll be out of the loop for a few weeks, as I’m in Taunton hospital for checks after a small but worrying stroke. No doubt I’ll soon be bored witless and keen to find out who our latest PM is. Or maybe not. Love to you all for keeping me sane in this mad world. 🥰

Is @Detectorists the best drama/comedy series ever made by the BBC?! Perfect watching - funny, poignant, moving and very very real. Slow TV at its very best - well done to all involved…

For god sake @BBCNews - we face the most important election in our nation’s history, you totally ignore the environment, and for three bulletins in a row you lead with the 106th person in line to the throne having concussion. Do you understand the concept of news values?!

Vaccinating badgers more effective than culls in stopping bovine TB, study finds.

It was one of the greatest privileges and pleasures of my life to work with, and later get to know as a friend, the wildlife TV presenter Tony Soper, a true pioneer who entertained millions. Here is my @guardianobits tribute to this fine man.

Sad news. The immensely talented, kind and brilliant bird artist Robert Gillmor died this afternoon, after a long illness. Many of us grew up with his artwork in magazines, and on book covers. A lovely man, who’ll be much missed. RIP Robert. Sympathy to Susan, Emily & Thomas.

    Replying to @NightSkyLantern
Please do NOT release these lanterns - they cause fires and can harm livestock and wildlife... this is VERY STUPID (not sure I’m being clear enough here...)
