- Twenty years on from the #GoodFridayAgreement let’s not forget the contribution made by the inimitable Mo Mowlam. We’d never seen the likes of her before as Secretary of State. Nor have we since. Thanks Mo. (Pic: Nat’l Portrait Gallery)
- Thanks for highlighting. People can join Amnesty’s campaign to free Loujain al-Hathloul and her imprisoned colleagues here: Free Saudi women who fought for the right to drive amnesty.org.uk/actions/free-s…
- To those (rightly) outraged at Alabama’s abortion ban... ...please note that the UK’s abortion law in Northern Ireland is MORE EXTREME - a near-absolute ban and up to life imprisonment as punishment for both doctor and woman
- 😂Snowflakes ❄️ have literally forced Britain First to call off their fascist ‘rally’ in Belfast. 😂
- “We have burned and destroyed along the Lough... where we killed man, woman, child, horse, beast and whatever we found.” - Sir Arthur Chichester, 1601 (or how Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, ended up ‘owning’ Lough Neagh')
- “After the police came they advised that it could be safer to leave the area and I definitely won't be back to that area ever again.” Mother and baby now homeless. Sectarian housing intimidation wins again. Sickening.
- Only a couple of miles separate Belfast’s Malone & Shankill Roads. 76% of school leavers in BT9 go on to higher education; just 19% in BT13. Once we finish cheering today’s @Education_NI u-turns, can we focus on long-neglected social disadvantage = educational disadvantage?
- This is what a superhero really looks like. 62 year-old nurse Deirdre Barr, originally from the Bogside, is coming out of retirement to work as NHS director of operations at the new 4,000-bed #COVID19 Nightingale Hospital being built in East London. #NHSheroes
- Who benefitted from slavery in Ireland? When it was abolished in British colonies in 1833, the equivalent of £millions of pounds was paid out in compensation to almost 100 slave owners at 80 addresses across Ireland, incl 21 addresses in what is present day Northern Ireland. 1/
- Queue for food parcels, Dublin, 1916 & 2016. Hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food, but by a scarcity of justice.
- We are repeatedly advised that the PSNI has insufficient numbers of officers. Yet here they are in London helping the Met to arrest pensioners for holding cardboard signs.BREAKING: Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are policing the protest against the Palestine Action ban at Trafalgar Square, London. Wouldn't it have made more sense to not arrest peaceful protestors, like other forces have done? Or lift the ban?
- Majella O'Hare, aged 12, was shot in the back by a British soldier as she walked to church. Her killer has never been held to account. Her family are still seeking justice. It's been a journey - friends have passed, I've been in and out of Gov't. But if you endure, and it's the right thing to do. Never again must we sacrifice our veterans to those intent on rewriting the history of Northern Ireland. I'm deeply proud of them. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/…
