When I lived in rural Missouri I was told by older folks that black residents couldn't check books out of public libraries. If they were friends with a white person they could ask that person to borrow books for them. Considering that they were tax payers that was crappy!

I think that vaccines are basic to this sense of dependency. Pediatricians sometimes complain that the families they treat call them a lot, sometimes for minor stuff. But I bet they would hate it if these same families got books on herbalism and started managing the minor stuff

My aunt sewed clothes for her family using flour sacks. She started sewing as a child and by the time she was 10 she was making most of the clothes for the entire family.

Thinking about the enormous volume of "coming of age" novels, all about finding out who you are. I ended up becoming a mother at 17. Didn't actually change my "identity" but moved on in a significant way. And I was able to get away with lying about having graduated high school,

Large numbers lived in slums and poverty, suffered from malnutrition and overcrowding and filth. But it was just that vaccine deficiency, rising living standards don't matter at all.

My grandmother was almost killed by Cossacks in the 1905 pogrom in Odessa. I never observed her spending the rest of her life trying to get revenge on the Cossacks. She came to the US in 1914, raised 3 children, ran a farm, lived until she died of old age.

For the first 3 years of life they imitate what they see and hear, which is how they learn the immensely complicated jobs of talking and walking. So it is very important what sort of behaviors they see around them.
