My mother (a Birmingham native): I just don’t think people understand what it was like. You couldn’t go to a store and try clothes on. You had to measure yourself with a ruler and hope it would fit when you got it home because Black people couldn’t return purchases.

Just so you know— around 70% of meat packing employees are black or Hispanic. Nearly 50% are immigrants. 15% lack health insurance. Forcing them to work in a pandemic has nothing to do with a “free market” but everything to do with ruthlessness and disregard for human life.

I haven’t seen any social commentary about the homes these kids come from today…🤷🏾‍♂️

The first 3 digits of your SSN are a regional code. So if you do *anything* with the first number of an SSN you are not doing anything "stochastic," you're picking people by where they were born. These people have no idea how SSN works, they're just talking nonsense.

Whenever I hear “they should have gone to trade school” I know you know nothing about predatory schools that saddled students with excessive debt under the pretense of learning marketable trades in a short period of time. They did what you said to do! It’s infuriating.

One thing that led to the little-discussed defeat of “anti-CRT” bills in Indiana is the fact that the College Board would not certify AP courses in schools adopting such strict and ahistorical curricula. Florida’s recent textbook fiasco may cost them AP status for math courses.

This police chief said a white 17 year old murdered two people “to resolve a situation” and that “people shouldn’t be out after curfew.” We see how police protect and act as accomplices to white assailants from the start. This is so racist and sick, yet on brand for police.

And we expect people to say something akin to “it wasn’t so bad” or “we survived by faith in ourselves and a better tomorrow” because nobody wants to confront the heinous domestic terrorism that was a a regular feature of everyday like for Black people in this country.

I wish more economists knew someone who was $27K in debt from culinary school and making $10.50/hr. Or a vet tech student with $19K in loans and earning $31K. But hey, we can’t get economists out of their racially segregated school districts, so this is hopeless.

Saying "race is socially constructed" (new for Economists!) does not lead anywhere unless you tell us what that social construction does. Money is socially constructed as well, but we know it as a medium of exchange. So what does it mean/do for race to be socially constructed?

The news from Milwaukee is deeply troubling. The county is 26% black...

American democracy is very, very young. It is not even 60 years old. Look at voting registration and voting by race in Mississippi counties in 1946– in some cases no Black people voted. None. When people are nostalgic for the “good old days,” this is what they mean.
